On a light hearted note, does anyone know from it's serial number 157287 an approximate date of my ( for now) beogram 4000?

the reason I ask is as lucky as I am to have my partner of 20+ years as into B&o as much as me , last year I got (my) first beomaster 6000, Tara within 5 minutes had left the room with it and claimed it as her own๐Ÿ˜ฑ

yes I know we could just share but I don't want to๐Ÿ˜‚ and we like silly squabbling !!

so I've said the fairest way this time is as we were born a year apart in the production run of the bg4000, which ever one of us was born nearest the 4000 gets it๐Ÿ™

B&O Service system does not recognize your serial no, so I can't check the date for you.

If its a 4000 type no 5215 then they were introduced to the market in 1972 and last sold December 1974

Sometimes they have a production sticker inside stating the year. I'd have a look there.

Some of the components are also dated.

The ICs probably have a date stamp, e.g. "7312" would be week 12 in 1973. The you'd at least know the unit can't be older than that (look out for components that might have been replaced, though). But as the 4000 had a rather short production run, this may not be of much help.

Vintage B&O often has year-month stamps somewhere in the woodwork, but I don't think I've seen them on Beograms.

A s/n as low as 63xxx has been seen on a BG4000 (owned by one of our canadian members) so yours
cannot be one of the earliest production individuals.

Keep in mind that serial numbers were not given as a continous range for each product but instead spread
across the whole product range and given pretty much in the order of production.

Had a good look inside and it's really very clean, built like a tank, no signs of anyone messing inside, looks all original, just the power caps look a little bulged so perfect for restoration , also managed to get the broken cartridge mount safely out of the cartridge so very pleased.

i can already tell this is going to be a very rewarding little project over the coming months

but most importantly for me I've dated it to 1973, same age as me ( in much better condition come to think of it as well) so it's mine not Tara's , I'll be teasing her so much, probably a little dance and maybe a song or too, and I can keep that up for a long time ๐Ÿ˜†

Good work! And well done!

I find the dating of vintage B&O stuff pretty interesting actually. Some of it very difficult to date I find though and even though I have collected a lot of serial numbers and put them in some kind of order it is tricky to definitely date items with confidence.

Still, all interesting stuff for us vintage collectors!
