I'm just on my way home after finally finding a pair of beovox 5000 mk3 speakers, lost count of how long I've been searching for a pair of these, when testing the full 5000 system one sounded pretty bad so figured it was going to just need new caps which I'd have done anyway , stopped at the services on the way home to see what mk they were and my heart sank

one speaker has both midrange missing, rang the guy who of course denied all knowledge so before I start, what does anyone think my chances of finding these are? Does anyone know if these misd were used in any other easier to find models?

fingers crossed

Are you sure, that these are Mk3 ?
If I remember correctly, the only Beovox 5000 with two midrange drivers are MK1.
(Mk3 has dual lower tweeter).

I'd say, that the chances of finding them are quite good.  Wink

I got a very anticipated parcel today from Martin to make my beovox 5000s live again.

if anyone wants me to post pictures of the renovation just ask.

they were quite a neglected pair waiting to be saved, and shine once more, they deserve it

Although i prefer the rosewood finish, for these i wanted teak to match the 1970s oak birmingham central library furniture we were fortunate to buy before they knocked it down,  we will be adapting it as soon as we have built the lounge, if John madin had designed speakers they would have looks just like these.

i expected when i did find a pair of these the condition may not be all that great, but unlike my perfect condition 8000 system , where these are going i didn't want to be too precious with huge dogs on the way and its nice to complete the 5000 system with them.

the former screwdriver expert owner as well as removing and misplacing the 2 tweeters, added some cheap batons to the backs, looks like these became a garage workbench in their past, but thankfully the maniac kept the covers on them which looking at the fabric would have been a real mission to replace.

whilst he wasn't butchering them with his trusty screwdriver he used the tops as a dinner table so they have numerous stains to the teak, i said i didn't want to be precious but this is just abuse, this just will not do.

The batons must have needed a paint to match the workbench these became , this was done with the same skill as his carpentry, the actual finish on the back of these speakers is something to be admired anyway, looks original but I guess designed to be placed against a wall so no thought was given to the backs, but still they didn't deserve this.  He has also painted over the top of one of the serial stickers which will be harder to remove.

A closer look at the dinner table, something I was able to get on with whilst waiting for my 'Aid Package' from Martin, which I still can't believe he had.

Quite a therapeutic exercise and a nice bonding experience for us both, I took my time on this was really quite gentle sanding with the grain, starting with a 400 grit and ending with 1200 grit, this brought them to a very acceptable finish, just leaving a very faint stain in one corner, they actually came out better than I had hoped. So really very pleased.

One might wonder how such a wonderful set could ever find itself in such a sorry state... The attic before the tip? Or, worse, the cellar?

Well, a nice project, with the cubes and the Beomic to boot!

That ," so called midrage" is in fact a dome tweeter, that I supose is used in its low range, as an upper midrange.

They were used in tons of speaker desiggns at the time, so the possibility for you to get a pair is very good.

Though check out the impendance, is it 4 or 8 ohm....

Excellent project, interesting to see how it goes. You have done an excellent job on that wood. I have found stains like that pretty tough to get out in the past!

How are the cubes?

I wasn't sure there would be interest in this thread as Jacques did such a great one on his pair a year back, but thought as these were a different version and at the opposite end of the spectrum in regards to condition it would be nice to see them brought back from the brink.

first impressions were a little disappointing on sound  but the more I've listened to the 5000s they have certainly grown on me and can tell they do need quite a large room and to be a distance away to really hear them at their best.

they are greatly improved with the 2500 cubes, sadly mine have 50% of the tweeters non functioning but still the improvement is evident.

at some point the speaker wire had been cut off shorter and he'd wired them out of phase so that helped again wiring them correctly.

As you say, your Beovoxes are a later MkIII version (allegedly the best) so showing them and explaining what you are doing is most welcome of course!

Have you done the crossover yet?

When I originally got these my hopes faded and I thought these would only be good as a donor pair until a complete set came along, how wrong I was.

Yesterday the impossible came true and Martins (Dillen) parcel arrived, it was like Christmas morning!!

His price was way to cheap for what they were especially given their rarity, I tried to pay more but Martin being the gentleman he is refused and without him this project would have been a non-starter.

... And some are 3 ohms and some are 6 ohms... it's a jungle.
Jason got the correct ones, (which BTW is labelled 4-8 ohms and they are not exactly common).

Happy I could help. :-)

Accessing the crossover was a simple task, just removing the bass driver and the four nuts on the crossover board gave me access to it.

While I was in there I put better wire to the bass driver , red is the original replaced with the white one shown, also soldered a new speaker wire out the back with a moulded 2 pin din end, which I can only guess it had originally, the original speaker cable was just cheap looking bell wire and just would not do.

I opted for a wire a little thicker, used on pretty much all of their passive speakers from then onwards, as I did want to retain the original look to the speakers as much as possible, picture shows the difference.

I had to file out the oval hole at the back of the crossover panel and decided to add a small grommet for a neater finish, I've never liked the look of just bare wires coming out of a speaker cabinet, I'm sure you purists will forgive this minor adaptation. The grommet needed to be a really tight fit to stretch oval to the hole and wire.

All the old foam seals had disintegrated so fitted new ones to the crossover panel and drivers.

Was able to manipulate the original brackets to hold the new caps, added some epoxy to further hold them in place, I'm not expecting a massive sound difference from the new caps but I certainly wouldn't want to run these with the original caps, they did need replacing.

What I should have mentioned at the beginning as well as thinking I would never get the tweeters, I thought I'd have even less chance of getting Tara to agree to re-home them! Yet another pair of big speakers that we 'NEED'!

As soon as she saw them there was a glint in her eye.......I was convinced something bad was about to happen to me, I was right but not quite what I was expecting......The first thing out of her mouth was ''you're not having them.......I am, they're beautiful.'' There seems to be no end to my luck with these.
