Decided to play a vinyl only to find the arm not responding to the operation buttons. Removing the platter i discover there is a white string with a small spring attached idlely laying amongst the other components. I am assuming this is why there is the lack of movement in the arm.
Any advice as to how to correct or reattach would be greatly appriciated.

There may be a little clip broken on the white plastic tonearm mount that holds the string and spring, a small screw can replace it if it is, a picture of the inside would be helpful
If it does turn out to be that try and locate the tiny piece so it doesn't get lodged in the many cogs, it could cause mayhem when working again

Can you take one of the white plastic piece attached to the bottom of the tonearm, it slides along the stainless steel rod, you may need to remove the 2 screws underneath the deck and hinge it up into service position

I could not see what you referred to but I did see a little white piece of plastic that looked as if it had snapped off from something.

Compare yours to the picture I added, I'm pretty sure that's your issue and the origin of that tiny piece

Take off and put your stylus safe while your working on it
Confirmed, that tiny white hook has snapped off the tonearm carriage where it used to hold the end of the white wire that moves it. A classic fault and relatively easy to fix.

Thanks to everyone who helped diagnosed the problem.
Is this a item I can get spares from B&O?
No longer a spare part, you can improvise with the tiny nut and bolt, it will be working again in no time

If you can put a nut on a bolt you can fix it
bolt goes in from underneath and the nut goes on top , the bolt protrudes slightly so the spring and string can hook over it
