I've been asked to repair a Beomaster 5000 where the volume was at maximum and couldn't be altered.
I removed the back up battery, at first it came on and you could select certain functions.
unplugged unit, fitted a new 3V lithium cell battery.
Upon switching on front display started counting till it reached 2:4 then stays on that. The loudness light is also lit.
Any ideas as to whats happened and how it can be fixed?
There is a handful of small capacitors near the voltage regulators, 10uF and 22uF. I've seen them cause the strangest faults. You do your work in a safe ESD-environment, right ?

I think you are thinking of the Beomaster 5500. There are no 10uF and 22uF capacitors near the regulators, instead there was a single 1uF which had blown its top. I replaced it but I still get the same fault.
The display reads 2:8
I've disconnected the back up battery, left if a few minutes then reconnected it but the problem remains,
