The only response I can get out of the tv is the volume but only by pressing the buttons on the display itself.  I have tried plugging in a signal but there is absolutely nothing to go on.  Besides the volume, it clicks on with the green led, and I guess it turns off again later after 2 minutes, after finding no signal or something?  The led goes back to red.

You need to give a lot more information before anyone can help with this one, i.e.

What else have you connected to the BV5 and to which inputs, what speakers (if any) have you connected, which remote are you trying to use, can you access the menu options etc etc.

The remote display is damaged, so I don't know if it's transmitting correctly when I press the menu, but nothing displays.  There is no menu.  The remote does transmit the power on signal though.  I connected the output of a secondary tv to the scart slots in the back.  Speakers?... well first of all let's get a picture...................

OK, so you have a damaged remote (presumably a BEO4?

If you look at the transmitting end of the remote through a digital camera (camera on a smartphone for example), if you press 'MENU' on the remote, do the IR lights flash?  Just because one button works on the remote doesn't mean the others work.  Ideally we need to get the menu up so we can check the connection assignations of the sockets.

Yes the IR lights do flash.

Press TV and/or DTV on the remote before pressing MENU to be sure it's on "video mode" (and not an audio source).

Good, at least the remote works.

Have you only just bought this BV5 or has it previously worked and now doesn't?

I bought it recently.  The seller just told me it doesn't turn on.  I tried pressing the TV+DTV also without a reaction.

What is the selection button next to the power switch on the display itself?

Now I'm confused.  There aren't any buttons on the TV.  You do have this TV don't you:

Or do you mean on the remote as you didn't say which remote you have?

If the seller said it didn't turn on, I'm not really sure what you're expecting?  It seems he was right and there may be a major problem with either the actual panel or the internals.

Yes the Beovision 5 as in the picture.  I removed the frame and lower panel to access the internals.  The display is a Panasonic Plasma.

So will anyone offer a solution or possible prediction on the defective component?

At the left corner you will find a small piece of black tape. Remove that.

Behind that tape you will find the standby led from the panel.

When switching on the BV5, the led turns from red to green and the same time, the panel is powered on.

At thia moment there has to be a visible green or red led next to the buttons on the pana panel.

Check at the bottom corner that the mains switch is switched on.

Does anyone know what could possibly be the faulty component?

Could be as simple as a fuse at the powerswitch board, located in the middle at the bottom. Or a failing panel. So, further investigating is needed.

I feel quite certain that it is the Panasonic panel that is failing.  I am trying to remove it however it is held in place via the bracket attached to the lower section, which appears almost inaccessible.  I have removed almost every available screw, but nothing will budge.  I'm sure it has be made this way to prevent tinkering, but how am I suppose to diagnose it properly without removing the components?  Does anyone have diagrams?

It's rather easy.

4 screws at the back, hidden behind a plastic cap.

After that just 2 screws  on both left and right side, loosen with an Allen Key. The panel then comes down.

Perfect, thankyou.  The bracket holding the panel is attached to the unit behind the plastic caps yes.  Then I can easily connect a pc input to test the panel.  I guess the serial one goes to the "brains" to output the sound.
