One of my Penta II powered speakers started to Hum when first turned on. Thought it was my equipment. But the past few days the hum stayed on well after equipment was turned off, finally unplugged the speaker to stop it. when plugged back it the next day it hummed a bit but then went away. Is the amp going south? where can it be fixed in the USA, can I replace amp myself???
"You think we can slap some oak on this thing?"
You can send it over for repair. But shippingcosts are probably a bit more. Specially as I advise to service both amplifiers.
Is the amplifier getting hot at the back panels? If so, be carefull as the output stage can get faulty.
Leosgonewild,
I was just in your fair city what a wonderful place especially enjoyed the design museum.
Anyway I have researched the ICE power modules and everything I read seems like it's the way to go even upgrade the penta's.
I must be honest I know very little about such things and will need help with every step of the process, can you or someone you know do the upgrade.
Preferably someone in the US due to shipping cost but would not let that get in the way of fixing them.

Would you use 1 x 125asx2 for both Pentas or one for each?
My advice.
/ Peter Pan.
Hi edresh.
You could start by replacing the two electrolytic capacitors in the power supply 80V/10000 uF (from memory)
I would give it a 85% probability for success!
If you follow Peters disassembly instruction right above you will be able to see them right away, just look for two miniature beer cans
Try it BEOVOX 141, your Penta will play so well that you can't understand it's the same speaker.

We’ve heart that advice a thousand times now.
Does not help much if you can’t provide a link to reasonsonably priced ICEPower amp.
By the way - don’t you disqualify the Pentas as a speaker, when you need to use a subwoofer with them......which you never mention writing about your Pentas?
MM
There is a tv - and there is a BV
Just go for the Millemissen

leosgonewild:It would be nice if MM and PP could take their beef to a separate thread.
I guess this is relevant, when P.P.’s advice is to use an ICEPower amp.
Since the link that he presents is ages old and contains no distribution source, could you provide such a link, perhaps......with or without beef?

You could simply use the modules from a Beolab 7-X... Those are around for a third of what Peter paid for his modules!

There really is no need for subwoofer with the Pentas, at higher levels where the ABL on the moderns "design" speakers kicks in, they might even rival a 9 or a 20 in the lower department!
If Peter has a subwoofer connected It might be beacuse he is suffering from a severe case of UnusedConnectionfobia.

No I get that, you end up with an amputee without the magnificent display....
ICEpower Beoamp 2. Download PDF fil. Tryk her.
Beoamp 2, I guess Millermissen stands corrected!
That would be an excellent choice, and its actually not that expensive and in an actual non plastic enclosure!
Brilliant,- good thinking Peter!
Thanks!
That might be an option - I wonder if someone has tried that out.
The mediocre display of infos in the original BL Penta version I can easily live without.
No recent, modern source sends anything anyway.
I’d prefer getting my media infos from an external (handheld) device.
Humming Pentas;Check the filter capacitors as mentioned above.Check also the rectifiers.Check the idle current settings. If wrong replace the trimmer and readjust.Check for cracked solder joints where the ribbon cable from the front panel is soldered to the main board.

Millemissen:The mediocre display....
Mediocre? I wonder how that word slipped into your vocabulary...?
What does it show/display, that could be of any help today.....even with oldschool masters?
P.S. I used to love it on my BL5000/3000 - but that was 10 years ago.
The answer lies implicitly in the name: "Status Display"
I guess the same thing can be achieved by super gluing a "handheld" device to the palm of your hand...
