Hello all,

I'm new to the forum and a new B&O owner! I've pieced together a setup which consists of:

Beomaster 3000-2 Amp
Beogram 1700 turntable
Beovox S50 speakers

I love the look and the sound. However, I'm getting issues with the amp. The output from a vinyl record is lower than it is when an iPod is plugged in through the 'tape' input.

If anyone can make any suggests on whether I need to clean up/repair/replace anything please let me know.

Thanks so much in advance for your help.

Have you checked/adjusted the level settings at the bottom of the Beomaster?

How much different?  If you're talking about having to move the volume to "6" instead of "4", I would consider that normal behavior.  Now, if your phono is barely audible with the volume slider nearly all the way to the right, that's a problem.

Apologies, I can't figure out the multiquote!

Thanks Martin, I haven't seen the level settings at all (beyond the sliders on the front of the amp). Are these located on the underside? What would be an optimal/normal setting?

Thanks Rich. It varies somewhat, at times I have to have the amp all the way up to 10 to hear very little, but most other times it needs to be 8-9 to have a very average sound, it rarely cranks up to what I would call a high or even medium sort of level.

Thanks for the responses

It's easy if you know html!  Stick out tongue

Yes, underside of unit.  If the 3000-2 is anything like the 4000, there are pots on the main circuit board, adjustable by screwdriver, accessible through the bottom plate.  On my 4000 they are clearly marked.  It's a way (I think) to have all the various inputs essentially give the same output.  For example, my tuner is way louder than my phono at a given volume level.

That is not normal behavior.  If adjustments from the bottom don't help, you may have a failing phono preamp (or even cartridge I suppose).

If you didnt change the electrolytic caps in your BM it is time to do it, If you have good sound on FM and tape (Ipod) there may be failures in the phono preamp and/or the BG, as Rich says, with the volume adjusted on FM and Tape to level 4 at normal listening level (not loud) on Phono it normally is level 6 at normal listening level, but considering the age of the BM it will have some failures and will need a repair or recondition, readjustment

Thanks for the further advice.

I've been away for the last two weeks, however, got back today and had a crack at the outputs. There was some movement up, but it didn't make a huge amount of difference. I did lose one of the speakers through Q1 so there may be an issue there - it just sounds bad.

The iPod output is fine and can be a lot lower than the record deck.

Would the next step be changing the caps? Any recommendations on a guide for doing this and where to purchase the replacements?

Thanks so much again for all your help.

Contact Dillen above via PM for a cap kit. I bought one years ago from him for your model and the instructions he supplied were fabulous and easy enough for me to follow.

If you think nobody cares, try missing a couple of payments.

Before ordering a cap kit, check the trimmers (potentiometers) for oxidation and order these too, also order the lamps

Got the lid off and this is how it's looking. Literally no idea whether anything is knackered from looking at it!

The lamps all light up so I've no concerns about that.

At least you have a construction date from it! A bit mucky and one pot in particular looks badly oxidized. Looks like it's got a bit hot too on some of those wires. A thorough service will help with a cap kit from Martin and a clean and lubrication/repair or replacement of pots.

Cheers Dave

Would you recommend contact cleaner for the pots? Currently speaking to Martin about a replacement cap kit - should revive this bad boy no end!

With the age of them it's probably safer to replace them rather than spend time messing with the old ones. It may work but could be temporary.

Thanks for the help everyone. I've just received my service kit from Martin (super speedy!) and am aiming to get this started next weekend.

I've hunted around the forum a bit for a post of someone having replaced the caps on a 3000-2 previously but with no luck. If anyone knows of one please pop a post up. I'll try and document my progress...!
