When you are ready to re-install those transistors you might consider using this product instead of the thermal paste and mica insulator route. The thermal insulators are much less messy and do a good job.

Could do a little today and yesterday evening, transformer sanded down, painted 2 times with anti oxidation primer, that will convert the transformer casing into hardened inox steel (well, the description said something like that), then sanded again and sprayed with hammered RustOleum Premium Metal Protection, If someone find this amplifier in about 200 years at least the transformer will be there. Inside I cleaned off the rust where I could and sealed it all wit marine grade resin.

Before

And painted the pieces where the rubber feet were, the old paint is dry from cleaning it will look better when treated with silicone

I then went on cleaning pieces in soapy water

And desoldered caps from one of the PCBs

Hi Søren,

I have been asleep at the wheel…. Just noticed on the latest addiction tread that you have started a new thread. Duh, I should have known that.

That you love a challenge is legend here on BeoWorld, but this Beolab 5000…… well it should more than satisfy your craving for stimulating those grey cells of yours.

None the less there is no doubt that you will restore your Beolab to its original glory, along with the knowledge that YOU did it.

As for Frede, he is a gentleman in the highest sense of the word. The only reason my “crown jewel” Beogram 4000 is in the condition it is, is do entirely to Frede’s generosity.

I will watch for each and every installment of your progress with enormous anticipation!

To give you a clear picture of the impact of seeing your 4 pages of posts had on me, I had TWO glasses of wine by the time I finished. Drinks + Drinks

Congratulations Søren, this is going to be exciting!

Amazing work already Søren. That once ugly transformer is now a joy to behold!

What paint are you using for the dark grey - almost black - parts?

I use 2 different, one is a spray Rustoleum Chalkboard spray, the other one is an acrylic wall paint, I use that when applying with brush, I then leave it for a couple of days until totally hardened, and then tread it with liquid silicone, the one they use for car tire walls and on plastics everywhere in the car, this is also good for rubber gaskets, it also helps eliminate static electricity (minus dust). I came on the wall paint when making a wall piece in my kitchen

Caps, trimmers and I hope the power transistors I think he has some NOS, the axial caps are very expensive by Mouser, I am waiting for Martins prices, but he seems to be very busy at the moment.

Went on cleaning and lubricating the sliding potentiometers. In the BL 5000 they are of better quality than the ones I have seen in later models, like BM 4000, 1900 and 2400.

Here the balance slider before disassembly

Pull off the circlips at the end of the shafts, at the other end there is a leaf spring keeping the shafts from moving.

Be careful when taking out the sliding piece, the small carbon tips may fall out, if not when disassembling, then by cleaning, the carbon tips are conical and easy to put back, but very small and easy to loose, they were secured originally with a green lacquer, but that is long gone or came off during cleaning with IPA. I press them back in with my finger nails checking that also the ones still there are seated properly, I then, with a needle, put a very tiny drop of Krazy glue on the backside of each one..

Here all clean, glued and ready to assemble, I clean the tracks with IPA and then carefully with a glass fiber brush, then deoxit. before assembling I grease the shafts with a heavy duty grease, just a thin film, and then the tracks with a special grease for slide poties

Assembled I check both tracks with an Ohmmeter. Here the very dirty balance poti, Someone also put a lot of grease everywhere in there

Here in Mexico we work year around (well not too much) Laughing

Bad News: 3 weeks ago Squar4 send 3 push buttons for the BL5000 and an antenna knob for my Beolit 505 to my son in Copenhagen, Square4 has since then been pestering the Danish postal service, today they told him that if not arrived after 3 week they are lost, Square4 is as I am disappointed, angry and in Her Queens English pissed off, Square4 then offered me his Beomaster 5000 receiver (with one button left) complete, My son cant bring that as he bring a Beolit 505, parts from Martin and  a preamp from Dxck (Tamtapir) in Sweden, this as hand baggage as I, thanks to the baggage handlers in SAS and Lufthansa, lost a suitcase with a Master de Luxe last year. Also lost was a original manual for BC 9000 that I send to Thailand last year, why does this happen to me, am I stupid or a just bad luck guy.. People try to help me I try to help people, and because of bad service around the world, we loose things that are very impossible or difficult to replace or remake.

More Bad News: I have now visited 4 different engravers, when they see the "BY APPOINTMENT TO THE ROYAL DANISH COURT" script in 6 point Helvetica they all back off, apparently their m/cs cant do it precisely, and maybe they back off because I tell them that I will kill them if they do it wrong.

I am not giving up, the whole family is looking for good engravers, mostly my niece who is into commercial printing and advertising, the last resort will be to let my son bring it back to DK in September and then send it to Frede for engraving, we are then back to the Danish postal service, and me between a rock and a hard place.

Good News: In between I put new surrounds on a pair of CX50is one new cap in each one, playing now with Mirielle Mathieu, and I wil tonight enjoy her an a couple of cubas

Hi Søren,

While it is not EXACTLY the same font as Helvetica (You wrote this post in Verdana which is also similar) you may find that Arial is almost an exact duplicate of Helvetica, as all three are sans serif.

Perhaps your engravers might be willing to try that, or at least give you a “sample” of what it would look like.

Just a suggestion for the man who has the patience of Job.

B&O Verdana Abcef

B&O Arial        Abcef

B&O Helvetica Abcef

B&O Beofont

See the difference in the &, the & on the script is exactly the same as in Helvetica, the length of the script in 6 points fits with Helvetica not with the others

Your font samples all show up looking the same on your above post (when reading it on my computer browser). To really see what you are seeing you need to do a screen shot of your font samples, then paste the screen shot JPG file on the thread (after trimming the size down of course).

I haven't seen any posts by Leslie since March of this year but didn't he used to reproduce B&O graphics? ...Using some sort of rub-off lettering he ordered from some place?

You definitely have had some terrible luck with postal shipments. What about having some place in Mexico make a temporary front plate that is as close to the original as they can get it?  You could use the Beolab with the substitute front plate for a while until you can get the original front plate properly restored (by Frede or some shop he recommends in Europe). Your son could hand carry the part back for you and then you could pick it up next time you go back. Just make sure you hand carry it and don't put it in your suite case.

The Font questions

On my iPhone I have a very nice little app. called: "WhatTheFont" - perhaps this could be of some use for you.

The panels for Beolab - Beomaster 5000

I have solved the panel problem in a little different way. I have a perfect pair of panels and I have asked a Danish factory to scan the panels and make correct tools for reproducing the panels. This means I have my Classic Audio owned tools at the factory for producing the panels or more correct reproducing the panels.

I  use the original panels for the process. Which means the factory remove the old text and anodization. After that the panels are polished to remove scratches. Then the panels are re-anodization and this time with the text tool which means the text is now a part of the anodization. The text will now stay "for ever" on the panels.

This is an expensive (very expensive) process.

Before the process I have to remove all fitting from the panels of course (lamp houses - light guides - ect.) and after the process all this have to be re-mounted of course. Since I am not able to do this any longer myself - I have to pay freelance technicians for the job.

I normally reproduce 10 pair of Beolab and Beomaster 5000 panels (batch) so I have a small stock for my customers.

So Søren if you are interested this could be shipped to your son i Copenhagen before he go to Mexico (With Danish Post of course)

Send me a PM and I will send you price informations.

One remark: this is based on a swap agreement - which means I need your old panels for future reproduction.

Just confirms Jacques answer in another thread, I never doubted Jacques but our friend Jeff (my no. 1 moral supporter) had some suggestions.

But here the proof, in the pic you will see Verdana is longer, Arial near, Helvetica is the only one with the particular G.

And to Keith we should have at least the Beofont available in the font list.

HISTORY: Helvetica was in use until the beginning of the 70is, I think Beofrutiger was used from around 72/73 later on came Beofont 2007 Mads Quistgaard designer.

The G in Helvetica is the same as on the front on BL/BM Verdana is longer and I think a little higher, Arial comes close but misses the G and the Helvetica 6p comes out a lot clearer in the pic, I wrote this in a text and converted to a JPG. I didnt alternate or edit the pic.

I am now in close contact with Frede, he send me prices and offered further help with my project, a real gentleman as he is, the cost for the fronts made perfectly will cost more than i paid for the BL/BM, is it worth it, yes it will last for ever, is it within my budget, I dont have a budget on this projekt.

BUT I am a grumpy old man and in my opinion in Mexico we can do anything, its just a matter of finding out where, I have tomorrow morning to visit 2 more engravers, one where I will meet the person doing the job, and one a first visit, Meeting the person actually doing the job normally turns out like this, I show him/her the pieces and ask "can you do it exactly like this" oh yes they say "we have very good equipment" I point at the small script and tell them " this is 6 point Helvetica and the crown is in this USB together with pics and the crown and the B&O logo in big files, can you do this precisely" they then start looking over their shoulder for help or their eyes start flickering left and right I then say thank you very much for your time. Until now nobody took out a loupe to inspect the small script, nobody asked me if I was sure about the font and nobody asked for what i will be using it. Tomorrow last chance, if it doesnt work out I will buy from Frede (I am not that grumpy)

Fredes prices are not expensive if one considers how this is done, his supplier made a special set of tools to be able to do the job, Frede paid for this (expensive) the fronts will be machined down below the anodized layer, then engraved and the anodized again. As they only make 10-12 sets at a time this also increase the price (set up times) and Frede has to live. Comes to it every piece has to be inspected carefully as it is old pieces and not new production, the price from Frede is in exchange for old pieces.

Thank you Søren, that is a compliment I relish and hope to live up to.

As far as Helvetica goes, in the days when I had an Apple computer it was my choice of font. When I switched to Windows I was disappointed in not finding Helvetica available but Arial was a close alternative.

If I am not mistaken….. and I am too lazy to look right now, I think Helvetica is the font ball I am using on my IBM Selectric III. (Yes, the owner of an 8-Track and a Reel-to-Reel finds a need for a typewriter. Shrug, what can I say?)

Hi Søren,

You LOVE a challenge and you are superbly good with them, so I wish you the BEST with finding an engraver that can do what you need.

If you have any anxiety whatsoever, take it from me; go with Frede, who is both a gentleman and a perfectionist.

Hi Søren,

You LOVE a challenge and you are superbly good with them, so I wish you the BEST with finding an engraver that can do what you need.

If you have any anxiety whatsoever, take it from me; go with Frede, who is both a gentleman and a perfectionist.

Jeff

Of course you are right Jeff, I know Frede started out like I do now, but after investigating he found the best (not the cheapest) solution, if B&O had known what they know now about aluminum when they made the BL/BM 5000 it would have been made that way, B&O also found out that aluminum is not the easiest material to work with and get perfect, so they made their own factory for just aluminum, other producers has tried to catch up but never quite reached the perfection that B&O have since years. Probably Frede has a "palanca" within B&O and got the advise, this is the only way to do it properly (only my thoughts Frede). I can get the fronts silk screen printed to perfection tomorrow, but will end up with the same problem and I want this to last for years. On the other hand I have learned a lot about laser cutting and engraving that I didnt know before, so the time was not wasted, and I met new people, some of these interesting or funny. This is going to be an interesting journey

I too once asked Frede for what he charged for his renewed fascias and honestly I did not think it was that dear either. I saw the job at Dave's place and it is superbly executed indeed, should it come to that for you Søren.

Frede is entirely honorable so I would fully expect his pricing to be more than fair for a quality product.

Hi Jeff!

I got that sorted out now, the last engraver I visited, a very knowledgeable older gentleman showed me some samples of aluminum engraved with fine lines, not the quality I wanted, he also mentioned that there after years may occur corrosion around the engraved lines or letters, if not protected, he also told me that he didnt know of any engraver in Mexico that could do a job this fine (the small letters and the crown). He recommended me to make it in Silk Screen Printing or rub on letters and then protect it with a polyurethane lacquer.

I ordered from Frede the fronts, and he will get the old ones back for reuse, he told me that he also have the push buttons, but as Martin is sending the missing one, I didnt order those. To my surprise he added a full set of buttons for the BL, at no cost, as he explained, the one from Martin could come from a different batch and have a color variation, He also added at no cost new LED lamps.

Thank you Frede, very much appreciated, but now tell me honestly, did you do this as a favor one Beoworlder to the other, or is it because you just couldnt bare that maybe one button showed a different color tone together with your perfect fronts Laughing

Frede will ship tomorrow to my son, and my son leaves for LA on August 28, and will be down here on September 4,

I am just overwhelmed with all the help I get here, not only material but also good advises, Henrik (Square4) donated me a very good looking BM 5000, sans the 3 buttons Post DK lost, this brought me to think a couple of days, it is just too good looking to use for spares, so I may have to go looking for one more BL 5000 and get both of them restored to old glory. To avoid the hassle of transporting them back and forth I may decide to let Frede do it, but this will depend on my economical status next year (and the goodwill of the FS). It make no sense for me ending up with 2 sets, so I will have to find someone that deserves this as a gift. I will have to decide when I get there. The Virus never stops.

This is excellent news Søren. I am so glad you went the route of Frede's replacement panels. This takes away any worry that your results will look just the way you always wanted. All you have to deal with now is the task of replacing the inside part and you know you can do that.

Hi Søren,

In many, many ways you have EARNED this “special” treatment from your incredible workmanship/dedication, not to mention your helping others. Yes - thumbs up

This is also the way folks on this forum work together, which is a credit to all concerned.

As for Frede, this is just who he is, a very, very generous man. (Knowledgeable too.)

This thread is about your Beolab 5000, but with regard to Frede, when my Beogram 4000 arrived, it was shattered. The owner in New Jersey didn’t have a clue how to pack a Beogram and when I opened the box my heart sank. The tonearms were hanging on the aluminum panel, the record position indicator broken in pieces, the dustcover cracked, the bearing that held the tonearm driveshaft broken to two, and the belt thereof I found under the motherboard.

Like you (sort of) I made repairs. I fashioned a replacement bearing using broken black plastic from my Beogram 8000 (which I was repairing at the time), glued the record position indicator into one piece…. but neither would have lasted for very long.

Frede offered to help me by replacing everything but refused any payment.

The ONLY reason that I have a well functioning Beogram 4000 is because of Frede’s kindness….. and Martin’s expertise in resolving my fuse issue.

Martin has done other kind things for me, but this is your thread…

I am sure that Henrik, Martin, and Frede know that they are dealing with a noble cause.

Personally I can hardly wait to hear/read/see the progress reports on your Beolab 5000! Big Smile
