Hey Jacques,
GREAT source for reproduction parts, the Beolab 5000 pieces looked incredible!
And I second your comment vis-à-vis Martin who does remarkable work and has the patience of Job.
Have a wonderful weekend!
Jeff

chartz:I remember that the seller did say it worked well... How could it?
Jacques, they lied.
You wont believe this, I picked up my son in the airport, and no suitcase, according to Aero Mexico it was left behind in LA, and they would deliver it today Saturday, All the parts for the BM/BL 5000 are in the suitcase, the Beolit 505 my son had in his carry on, I have been worrying since yesterday, told myself it was bound to happen, Burke's law and so on. I have been awake since 6 AM and yes just running around doing nothing. 10:45 AM they called from Aero Mexico, to confirm our address and asking when they could deliver the suitcase, so now it is on the way. I can now start working normally again. I will update the thread when I have the parts unpacked and in my hands.
The lost suitcase
Here all the parts from the suitcase, upper right the preamplifier for my BG 1000 a gift from Tamtapir, all the caps and lamps from Martin, and the fronts from Frede, with a set of buttons and led lamps he threw in as a gift, and then the Beolit 505 that my son brought in his carry on.
The fronts are as new and beautiful made here details
I should now be ready to start working, but I cant, I am going to San Luis Potosi tomorrow and will stay there working for at least 5 days the week after I will be going to Xalapa and work there for a couple of days, so the most important work will have to be postponed
Collecting Vintage B&O is not a hobby, its a lifestyle.
Hi Søren,
Frede’s parts look AMAZING, absolutely AMAZING! Of course we would expect nothing less from Frede.
Sorry to hear that you have to take off for work, especially with your son having just arrived, but we gotta pay for our passions (hobbies/obsessions) so it will have to be.
Like your Beolit as well, very nice looking. Makes me want to have a look at my 1965 Grundig Transistor 5000, a monster of a radio that must weigh 30 pounds with all its batteries in place.
Enjoy your goodies as well as you son’s visit!
Hi Søren!
Tremendous news indeed!
Have you already sent the old fascias over to Frede?
Jacques
Rich:Those front panels are nothing short of amazing. Looking forward to the end result.
I will second that. cant wait to see it all come together Soren
chartz: Hi Søren! Tremendous news indeed! Have you already sent the old fascias over to Frede?
The old fronts will go back with my son and he will send them to Frede, Frede also send off the new fronts without having received payment ( came one day late I think), risky business, I could have screwed him nice and easy, if I was that kind of person. Maybe my payment honesty is why I never got rich, My son is going back to DK on the 20.09.15
I am sitting in a boring hotel room in San Luis Potosi, when I was younger I loved traveling, partying at night and working hard every day, those days are long gone, now its only work and maybe finding a good restaurant to dine properly at night.
I think a lot of us know what you are talking about…. maturity, is SO over-rated.
Sorry you are bored, but what do you think of these “Apple Blossoms?”
Will post the recipe of Grumpy Gourmets tomorrow, but thought I’d share our Labour Day desert with you.
Piaf:Sorry you are bored, but what do you think of these “Apple Blossoms?”
Beautiful Jeff, will check the recipe.
Here my new desktop background, stolen from Classic Audio
Now that’s what I call a desktop! Excellent!
I enjoy this week with my youngest, and then its back to the old daily schedule, I hope I will get some time for the 5000s but more jobs are waiting, so it will be end of September before I can get serious.
Oh the delicious anticipation. Søren, I just know this is going to be one of your greatest threads. (And your Beomaster 4400 repair/transformation is a hard act to follow!)

chartz:end of September before I can get serious.
Guys,
My calendar says September 28th. By any measure I comprehend the end of September has arrived.
This is really gonna be good!
As 2 slave drivers (no names) forced me to it. Here goes
Ready, observe my new multi room system in the upper left corner
Lining up the caps according to size, to help avoiding mistakes and faster that way, missing all the 47 uF caps, found 2 piece 47/63 but radial, I may change these later
First 2 caps in and soldered, yes I will clean it all when done soldering
Front side all done, see the 2 blue radial caps, I dont like that, Jaques, Martin remarks
Solder side (before cleaning), I will do all the soldering and then clean it all in a big cleaning tray
Tomorrow more cap work, and then on to the funny part
Søren,
Slave drivers? Hardly. We are encouragers and HIGH admirers so looking forward to your amazing results.
a small advice......
We have recenly seen a number of the "black cap" small signal transistor (Fairchild origin as far as I remember) failing. The problem we have seen is periodic noise.
I recommend to replace all of them.
/Frede

Thanks Frede, will do, will search Mouser for a good replacement
Got something done today too, this is the PCB with most bad Caps, there is a lot of cleaning to do from the leaking caps, I go one by one and clean as I go.
As the PCB is crowded, I had to put a small radial 220 uF (red arrow) instead of the fat axial 220 uF (green arrow) and that one I had to lift up a little not to touch the components below. where the radial 220 uF 50V is, were an axial 250 uF, 40V and is shown in the drawing as pos. 367, 80 uF 25V, the only difference from the schematics I have found until now. I also changed all the trimmers on this PCB. I am waiting for 47 uF caps used the last 2 yesterday
So with the excitement FINALLY at hand, what am I doing?
Cleaning and lubricating seven of my favorite clocks in my collection of 14.
Wouldn’t you know it, my favourite clock; a 1790 magnificent domed French mantle clock is the only one that refuses to work?
Maybe Søren works on clocks. (I should be so lucky.)
Just a joke Søren, I love what you are doing with your Beolab 5000, my clock issues, I will solve myself.
Now where is my sledge hammer?
chartz:Why not good radial Elna or Panasonic everywhere? These were not very common in 1967 perhaps, so that B&O had to use axial caps standing up everywhere? Is there another reason? It was well worth the wait, Søren. When I do mine (it works and sounds fine, but is it on its last legs? ) what you are doing here will be invaluable. Thanks.

Your right Jacques, but I wanted to keep it as original as possible, but with the axial caps of today having different dimensions as before, it really doesnt matter. I spoke with Martin about it and we agreed to keep it as original possible, about 20-30 % has to be axial as they are mounted horizontally. It doesnt look right when using radial caps in these positions.
I am still looking for transistors to change the black drop formed Fairchilds, the BC 154 is not a problem, but for the SE 6002 its difficult to find a replacement. Any ideas ?
BTW, thanks for pushing me back to the workbench to both of you, Jacques and Jeff, I needed that after the spare part scare, now I am back on track, good luck with the clock Jeff
SE6002 ?Are you sure, it's not SE8002 ?
I like to replace SE8002 with BC141
Martin
Dillen: SE6002 ?Are you sure, it's not SE8002 ? I like to replace SE8002 with BC141 Martin
I just checked the 002 and 003 PCBs loosely there may be some SE 8002 as well, but I will list all when getting there
SE 6002
I suggests BC 546B (VCE) - the function in the Beolab 5000 is smalsignal amplification. The reason for the SE6002 is the VCE spec.
I have sent you an email with what I have found on the subject.
I also like to use BC546B and BC212B (PNP) transistors.
chartz:All things French can be temperamental. Or idiosyncratic. Tic-toc.
Jacques,
That is the rumor.
I tried walking around this clock with my sledgehammer making menacing motions to intimidate it. Didn’t work, I’ll have to get out a more refined tool to deal with this. Got to be that damn silk escapement…. kind of like Søren’s axial caps.
Now back to Søren’s Beolab 5000, a vastly more appropriate and INTERESTING subject.
Finished the caps for the BL 5000, and checked the Fairchild black drop transistors,
I have NPN, BC115 40/30/5V, 0.1A, hFE min.80 , SE6002 40/30/5V, 0.1A, hFE min.150, UW0029 30/20/5V, 0.1A, hFE min.200
PNP, BC154 40/40/5V, 0.1A, hFE min.160
I can get here fast BC547B, 50/45/6V, 0.1A, hFE min.200, will this one do for all 3 NPN
and for the PNP BC327B 50/45/5 0.8A, hFE min.160
If not I will have to order from Mouser, 1 week delivery
As General Electric proudly proclaimed in the sixties, “Progress, our most important product.” And progress is at hand.

I suggests you use BC550B / BC560B where you can. This is a low noise transistor and designed for preamplifier stages.
Thank you Frede, did you get the old fronts ?
Søren Mexico: Thank you Frede, did you get the old fronts ?
No not yet.
classic: Søren Mexico: Thank you Frede, did you get the old fronts ? No not yet. /Frede
Investigating, but the boy was lacking behind in his work and starting late at the last term on CBS, so maybe he didnt ship yet. His suitcase arrived 3 days after him, with the fronts in it.
I was fiddling a little around on the PCBs yesterday, cleaning (its getting an obsession) and going over the black drop transistors again and surfing the web for datasheets.
Frede mentioned low noise caps and I went informing myself, the BC 154 and SE 6002 are indeed low noise, the BC547B I wanted to use has exact the same values as the BC550B Frede suggested, except for the NF (Noise Figure)
It is interesting that the engineers choose this funny looking case style developing the BL, but it was probably the best low noise transistor available at the time.
I ordered a bunch of BC550C (no B version available) and BC560C and will now start on the BM 5000 caps, maybe I am in luck and my clients will stop calling for a while, I have reached this years goal for the company last month.
Some pics. PCB finished and clean wit the new TRs, the other PCBs are ready too.
Here I may get in trouble, these two PCBs are screwed onto the cooling ribs and the TRs inserted into a hole there, The new TRs sits a little higher than the black drops, will see when assembling
Everything looks so nice and new.John
Very nice. I hadn't realized that one of the PCBs had tracks on both sides!
Its kind of curious the BL has 2 kinds of PCB, and yes one of them has component side tracks, both types are easy to work on and take a lot of heat, where as the PCB in the BM looks like one of the PCBs from the BL. but is more delicate to work on, desolderimg I normally has the temp. turned up to 380°C but on this one I turned it down to 350°C. Tomorrow I start checking all the big trimmers, I didnt find a suitable replacement for these and some of them looks kind of bad, I will clean them up best possible and check them for function, slowly I am getting ready to assemble and tests.
