Rich:Congratulations. Of course I want to hear your thoughts after listening with M70s.
The Beolab 5000 sounds a bit lively with the M70, really lovely. Boy is it a good amplifier, this!
I'm confident that Søren will find out it is by far his best amplifier.
I have a contemporary refurbished ReVox A78 to compare it to, and the B&O is a clear winner, by a clear margin.
And yet, the Swiss one is one of the best 3055-equiped amplifier. And yet it is no slouch by any means!
Now he will need the full system, Beovox 5000 and Cubes...
Jacques
Jacques,
I gotta tell you, I really can’t tell the difference between any of my amplifiers: McIntosh 2255, B&O Beomaster 2400, 4400, 4500, or Beocenter 9000.
While it is perfectly true that I raved no end about the lovely, delicious, sensuous, warm sound of my Beomaster 4500….. and how much I MISS it. But that was the unintended result of a slowly failing amplifier.
Now that I have had my 2400 and 4500 rebuilt, they sound (to me) exactly like the completely unrelated 500 watt McIntosh 2255.
Of course I covet a Beolab 5000 more than I care to admit to myself; in part because I have such admiration for anything designed to be “the best,” as the Beolab 5000 was. But I wonder if one could really hear any difference between the Beolab 5000 and any part of the high-end B&O range of amplifiers.
Perhaps less background noise as opposed to the “lesser” amplifiers.
Whatever the case I too know that Søren will love his personally restored Beolab 5000 and Beomaster 5000….. to the extent that I fear Mexico may well suffer a shortage of rum from all the celebrations.

Jeff, it is most definitely not an illusion. The Beolab 5000 amplifier does sound livelier than my other amps, tube or transistor. If anything, bass is slightly exaggerated too.
I discussed this with a few B&O friends, and we all concluded to finding its sound lively and characterful.
Livelier and more bass response? OMG, I gotta have one someday.
If you tell me this is true, I believe it, period.
More good news for Søren.
As I only had my computer connected, with music from Amazon , to the tape in, and the 3702s out,I cant confirm anything, the Amazon music is not the best, comes to it my wifi, I will connect my BG 5000 pizzabox with MMC2, and the M70 speakers to get something to compare with my BM 4400.
I have some bad speaker jacks, I will have to clean them again and tighten them up a little, they are kind of loose, just a little touch on the plugs and the sound is gone, There is also some noise in the speakers turning on and off the power.
I left it on for 4 hours yesterday, the last half hour playing very loud, volume on 7.5, (thats very loud for my 3702), nothing get hot, cooling ribs just a little more than hand warm
Collecting Vintage B&O is not a hobby, its a lifestyle.
Here the time effort, with costs, its a lot of hours, but I used as lot of time playing around and thinking of the best way to dismantle, then checking everything 5 times when soldering back the wires, checked all the new TRs before soldering, and even so I soldered one in with wrong polarity, I also used a lot of time cleaning, I found dirt everywhere every time I desoldered wires or components I had to clean again again.
But here the hours and costs, buying price with shipping was USD 450.00 for BL/BM
Yes the thud is quite normal. Like Dave, volume 5 is very loud chez Jacques (same set-up), but that could be down to the setting of the trimmers underneath.
Søren Mexico: Getting there, running music from computer, through BL 5000 to Beovox 3702, now 2 hours playing without problems, will let it play for at least 2 hours more, until now nothing bad except for scratchy tape switch. A beauty

Tam, have you compared the BG1800 to anything else in this system?
chartz: Tam, have you compared the BG1800 to anything else in this system?
I've been using Beogram 6000 (5502) and Beogram 1000 besides this BG 1800. The former sounded best but is needed in another system.
BG 1800 fits best according to my opinion, despite (or thanks to) its peculiar design. This one works and sounds acceptable but I almost never use it.
Just beautiful on display, D i c k.
Guys,
They are all so beautiful. I have turned a suitable shade of GREEN, from pure unadulterated jealousy.

I have no holder for a rabbit ear antenna! How does it look and where is it mounted on BM 5000?

chartz:Your time will come Jeff.
Good day Jacques.
I rather suspect that you are right. I have been a bit more proactive lately vis-à-vis the Beolab 5000 with a dedicated search on eBay and a couple of feelers placed in appropriate places.
Polite persistence works every time…. I am nothing if not a patient guy.
Trying to be proactive, when I find a Beolab 5000/Beomaster 5000 what should I expect to pay for one in decent shape? We are talking a fair price to both buyer and seller.
The BL 5000 doesn’t come up for sale often making them hard to find….. and buyers interested in a late sixties/early seventies amplifier are few and far between, making pricing problematic.
So what would be a reasonable price for the Beolab 5000 and the Beomaster 5000 in US dollars?
Hi Jacques,
Thanks for the candid answer.
I am looking for a Beolab in good cosmetic and electronic condition, not abused (hopefully loved) rather than a Søren project.
I posted the question in a sincere effort to avoid the pitfall of my last amplifier purchase: trusting the seller and paying too much for a dubious restoration.
I “thought” I had really found my Beolab 5000/Beomaster 5000 and could finally join the “Beolab club” with Søren, Jacques, and Rich….. but no, crash and burn.
The Beolab 5000 turned out to be the speakers and the Beomaster 5000, the pizza box variety, and for $1,500 no less.
Just a misunderstanding, but I am SO disappointed.
Jeff check your PM
Dave Farr:Ooh, this sound clandestine! I like it and feel an announcement coming on. Dave.
Dave,
Clandestine and dark announcements, sounds positively Agatha Christie and terribly exciting.
I hope you will not be disappointed.

Jeff,
now that just amplifies the intrigue and expectation! Good things come to those who wait - and you've waited long enough.
Dave.
Tuesday I had some time on hand and got the BL connected to the BM with the original cable, but I get some small failures, I didnt have time to go after it, but it is like this: Balance only works for the right channel, when turning to left channel both speakers continues as if balance was in "0", I checked the output from the BM (it has good reception) and I get around 2 mV on both channels, I will try to connect my software scope today and go after the failure, I made a new cable for the connection BL to BM but the original one measures OK, I will also test the other sources (phono tape aux) and try the tuner in with another BM. I have checked every single wire connection for correctness, no problems.
Will go at it and come back with more.
Dave Farr: now that just amplifies the intrigue and expectation! Good things come to those who wait - and you've waited long enough. Dave.
Thank you, that was very kind of you to say.
And yes, it has been a rather long wait, so we’ll see what we can do to fulfill the expectations and the intrigues.
We need an entirely new thread here: Jeff's looong and winding quest for a Beolab 5000. Did I say "Your Time Will Come?"

Yes sir you did say “Your time will come.” And Dave was so kind as to add, “Good things come to those who wait - and you've waited long enough.”
I sincerely hope that Søren doesn’t feel that I was attempting to (in any way) sideline his most interesting thread.
Needless to say I would be delighted to start a new thread and let Søren continue uninterrupted with his amazing restoration.
The “only flaw in the slaw” as we would say in the southern United States (Problem: to the rest of the educated world) is that I don’t know if there is sufficient interest to start such a thread.
Jacques it was you who REALLY motivated me to purchase a Beolab 5000/Beomaster 5000 thus I really gave it my best….. and I thought I had a pristine Beolab 5000/Beomaster 5000, only to find it was a misunderstanding.
I would hate to have either you or Dave think that I was a quitter, as I am NOT a quitter, but for the moment, I have played all available options.
As such I don’t really see this as an opening for a new thread.
I hope you get the bugs all sorted soon Soren. You really put in a lot of effort on this project.
A dream finally achieved
Good to see you back Ricardo, going dark side are you, no problem if it plays good. I´m still struggling here, trying to get kinks out, left channel giving problems, only scratchy sound coming out, but I cant seem to pinpoint where the failure is, will go on tomorrow and come back here with a better failure description.
I saw Ricardo’s Tandberg amplifier and it is stunning. (I can see how he was drawn to the Dark Side!)
Hey Søren.
Here are some Pictures of your new beolab 5000 system.
Henrik
square4: Hey Søren. Here are some Pictures of your new beolab 5000 system.
Thank you Henrik, this is a long story, It started out with a missing antenna knob for a Beolit 505, and 2 missing push buttons for the BL 5000, Henrik was following my threads, and chimed in on my PMs, "I have the buttons and the knob" where shall I send them, no charge", as Henrik doesnt poste a lot here I wondered who he is, turned out in our conversations, Danish and in Copenhagen, just ideal for me, I told Henrik to send the envelope to my son, he did that same day, it never arrived, disappeared into thin air, after 3 weeks Henrik gave up on the Danish postal service, and I was disappointed, first of all because Henrik got a lot of extra work only because he wanted to help a fellow Beoworlder, second because valuable spare parts got lost.
I think Henrik felt a little bad about the lost parts, and he started out telling me that he had a BL 5000 that he could take parts from if I needed, as always I wanted to save what can be saved of these iconic items and told Henrik to sit tight until I got my own BM/BL sorted out, Then Henrik showed me the Real McCoy, both BM and BL and did I want to buy it, he offered me a very but very favorable price, of course I couldnt let that go, we agreed on the price, and Henrik told me I could pay when I pick it up in May next year. I didnt post anything about this, I didnt want Henrik to be molested by other buyers, but as he now has posted it himself I can tell the story.
I think, as Henrik didnt want to do these himself, he wanted them to go to a good home making sure that they will be restored (if possible) to former glory.
Henrik, thank you, you are a real Beoworlder and a gentleman.
One more favor Henrik, can you brush off the dust from the wires where the volume and balance sliders are inter connected and take a close up pick of the connections, I want to be sure that I have these connections right.
Could you see it on this pic?
Søren and Henrik,
GREAT story, of the caliber that offers tangible proof of the basic goodness of man.
square4:Could you see it on this pic?
Perfect, And I have it correctly connected, love your pics, how do you post them
I send them from my mobilephone too my computer and from my computer to my Beoworld files.
Piaf: Søren and Henrik, GREAT story, of the caliber that offers tangible proof of the basic goodness of man. Jeff
Attending this forum always restores any doubt I may have about that.
About my second set, I have time until May next year to decide what to do with it, 1. Let Frede restore it and keep it, or give it to one of my sons. 2. restore it myself and keep it or to one of the sons, 3. Restore it and sell one of the 2 to Jeff at cost price.
1. High cost involved, but I would love to
2. Cheaper but not as good, and I am hesitating giving it to one of my sons, 3 of them has no interest in B&O, the youngest will probably start travelling do to work type, I dont want these bumping around the world in containers.
3. I like restoring and solving problems, I like Jeff and I know he will appreciate it and give the TLC needed.
Tough decisions, I was searching for these about 3 years, and now I have to sets, that virus is really doing it to me.
I wote for selling to Jeff
Option three also has my vote, obviously.
