Hello,

Can anyone recommend a good place in Kent, UK, to take my Penta amps for a service? One of them doesn't work, one does.

Thanks

All Penta Amp's need service at a time. Trimmers and bad solder joints. These need to be replaced/resoldered before more damage is caused.

You can always send them to the Netherlands if you like. You only need a strong box for packaging.

Hi - thanks for your reply. Is there anyone in particular I can send them to?

I was really hoping the forum might have been able to help out - I'd love to get these speakers working properly.

I sent mine to fellow member 'Dillen' for a rebuild but you could try a company in Crawley I think it is who Lifestyle AV use but their name escapes me at the moment.  If I remember it, I'll let you know.

Scrap that, just found it:

You're welcome. If they can do the repair, please let us know how they get on as feedback is useful for other members to know about.

Update:

Hello. It's been a while since I posted my original thread but I have news.

I took my Pentas to B&O Canterbury and left them, reluctantly at first, with an engineer called Chris.

He had them for two weeks (they had just relocated from smaller premises and had a lot on) but used his time to strip them down and check all solders, caps and wiring.

So, I went to collect them (I'd plumbed in my old 1702s while the Pentas were away - amazing little pressure chambers still!) after a fortnight....

.....connected to a Beosound 9000 with both amps playing as they should, displays working perfectly and the cabinets gleaming!

Chris also repaired the front panel on one of them which had sustained a little damage during one of my early attempts to get inside.

The work undertaken:

Fault diagnosis:

Disassemble and checks

Repairs:

new caps

re-soldered ribbon connections

new clip on front panel

Reassemble + test

Polish/brush/hoover

Everyone in the shop was very friendly, helpful and straight talking. No silliness.

Chris turned out to be a big fan of the old 80s equipment. It was clear to see in the way he talked about the job and how he handled the switches. Makes a difference to see that.

I'm so happy to have taken the plunge and gone to my local dealer with my old Pentas. They're like new now, and they're balanced which really is something special.

My music sounds glorious!

So, B&O Canterbury are in my opinion fabulous and worth investing in. At least while they have such a talented engineer on site - and I don't expect that to change for a while.

Other plus points:

New shop has parking out front.

Lovely big demo areas full of beautiful hifi.

The cost: a sniff over £200 including service at £70.

Well worth it given that they're now like new again Big Smile

If you're in Kent and want the fiddly jobs done well, this way is a good way to go.

Any chance you could send me the contact details! I have a set of Penta's which require a service! PM or e-mail me if it suits!

Richard.
