Evan: Improvements to my reproduction 2500s are coming - stay tuned
Not going anywhere Evan!
Jacques
Since you are all having to wait patiently, here is a small tease. Anyone want to hazard a guess at what it is?
Okay everyone, I won't keep you in suspense any longer. Over the past week, I have been planning to finalize my cube tweeters once and for all. I am tired of only looking at them!
So in the beginning, there were some problems. Problems with performance as well as problems integrating them into my system.
Starting with the sound, the balance wasn't perfect, slightly louder in the right channel. Secondly, output in all 6 drivers in each cube was not equal. Thirdly, there were short circuits in my wiring. Lastly, I had a terrible crossover, a single 10uF 50v cap.
With this in mind I designed a much more accurate crossover, and even boards that would be etched. As I said a while ago, I was already re-wiring the cubes and finished that the other day. Off to a good start!
Then I started thinking about the integration part. Problems with integration are things like independent level control as well as balance. Control of these variables are really necessary with tweeters (let alone two arrays of 6!) otherwise they will not match the level of the other speakers in the system. After considering this I pretty much stopped my project not knowing what to do.
Monday, I believe, I went for a drive as the weather was outstanding, 70 degrees! Since I was out and about just wasting time enjoying myself I figured I would stop in my local music/gear shop. The very same shop I found my new (to me) Yamaha monster amplifier. I carefully looked over the racks of components and played with one. Not long after I began browsing, my eyes were drawn to an orange JBL logo. I looked closer. "Frequency Dividing Network" is printed in the other corner. I instantly lean in and look closer. Its a thin piece with only a power button sticking out. I instantly become curious as to whether or not this can solve my tweeter dilemma, thinking it was a regular crossover. I remove it from the rack and start searching the internet for a manual, Google is force-fed "JBL 5235" by my iPhone and I bring up a manual. The unit turns out to be an active crossover! My mind was overrun with the thought of using this active cross and my spare Niles amp to power my tweeters. I thought it over and decided to pull the trigger. My BeoVoxes would become BeoLabs!
With my week winding down, I decided to hook everything up last night. This took some work, I had to add the speaker wire to my 2500s, re-terminate two cables to accommodate the JBL crossover, and make a PowerLink to RCA cable. I dusted off my Niles, cleaned up the JBL, and decided to add in my Technics EQ as the JBL doesn't have the exact crossover point I would prefer. The JBL uses interchangeable cards to change the high pass and I will ultimately be recreating a pair of the boards with my own values, hence the picture above.
After I connected everything, I powered of everything on (without anything playing) only to hear a ridiculous amount of noise. This wasn't so surprising as I thought to myself, "there are way too many connections here for it to work the first time." I switched it all off and started looking over the JBL manual to read about the connections again. Turned out mistakenly connected the unbalanced signal improperly. So that was sorted - phew! Yet a small amount of buzz remained, a buzz that wasn't present in my other speakers. I investigated the cabling and found a stereo RCA cable with a bad connection. I promtly tossed the cable and replaced it. Now they are running perfectly!
By the time I finally heard music it was 11 pm. I had been at it for hours but it didn't matter. They were playing brilliantly!!! Albeit a bit loud and harsh, the sound was balanced and driver output was finally equal!! Success! Using the JBL's level controls and my EQ I have dialed them in pretty well.
Today, I have been listening since roughly 10:30 this morning and have adjusted them here and there. I have been listening along side my BeoLab 5000s and simply cannot believe my ears! They are soooo much better! I have been immersing myself in the largest stereo image I've ever achieved and have been rediscovering the treble zones of my favorite tunes. With these, you can really sit just about anywhere in the room and get an outstanding image.
I'm hooked.
Congratulations Evan, your 2500's looks great! Are the bases made of solid steel?
Brengen & Ophalen
Leslie Nelwan: Congratulations Evan, your 2500's looks great! Are the bases made of solid steel?
Thank you Leslie! Unfortunately no, they are the original bases from a lamp. They are stainless steel. What's nice is they provide a convenient path for the speaker wire.
Oh yeah, off course, never thought of that. But it's solid enough to keep the cubes from tilting isn't it?
Any new "projects" coming up? And where is your friend Todd. The B&O virus did not catch him?
Having plans myself to fully integrate an Ipod 1 (taking out the cassette unit) into a BC2500/Ouverture and painting the whole thing white except for the keyboard. What do you think.
The self made glass windows are finished as could be seen in the old forum so now I only need to know how to connect the Ipod to an extended USB connector (also integrated on the front bottom) and the Ipod audio out to the Aux input of the BC2500/Ouverture.
Yes, actually, they have ballast weights in the bottom, I think they are filled with sand. The cubes are indeed very heavy! For a tweeter that is.
New projects! Of course!! Just need time to do them I have my 3000-2 to finish, my 4500 system to re-cap, refurbish my BV2600s and S45-2s.
For non B&O I have a Yamaha amp to re-do and have been machining a few aluminum parts for it already. It used to be rack mounted and now needs a set of feet.
I have also been developing/designing a headphone amplifier for nearly 5 months now, I am building it from scratch. The headphone amplifier will likely be the first of these projects to finish. It is very near to test assembly. I have purchased most of the components and can't wait to get it rolling.
As for Todd, he hasn't had much time to spend on B&O as he would like, he is very busy with work and is getting ready to move house. He assures me that his new house will be a place for the BeoVirus to take over!
The iPod conversion sounds very cool! I know there was a member (can't remember his name) who made controllers for iPods that worked with the Apple dock. Using the TAPE mode, you could control the iPod with the BS or BS via Beo4.
In white you say?!?!?! I cannot wait to see it!!!!!!!!

Name is Ridax and I have such a controller
Leslie Nelwan:Name is Ridax and I have such a controller
I knew it started with the letter R!! Can't believe I forgot. I tried to contact him to buy one and now I don't think I want to, my iPod listening has decreased significantly at home. On the other hand, if I owned a BS2500, I wouldn't hesitate to convert it. I'm pretty sure I'll never get into tapes.
Starts getting interesting again, Evan is back, Leslie tracking, waiting for more, only smiley I like
Collecting Vintage B&O is not a hobby, its a lifestyle.
My membership stars below my Avatar are dissapeared
And I cannot reply on the General forum

Just posted there, no problems, but sure looks like something is wrong as your stars disappeared.
No problem posting but what are the green bars under the avatars ?

It should follow your post quote, but it doesn't, maybe in the new forum its for the most beautiful Avatar
Søren Mexico:maybe in the new forum its for the most beautiful Avatar
...that's why Leslie lost his star's! :-D

What do you mean Eddie?
I think it was a comment on your picture file! New one rather more visually attractive!!

Cheers mate
I'm trying my very hardest to produce projects and equipment and make progress, but as you all know I am a student and studying does get in the way. I have become very strategic about getting prepared for these projects as possible ahead of time and come summer, they should move quickly as a result - I need to catch up! When I get these projects rolling it will be an exciting time, that is for sure!
A couple days ago, I found this little gem and thought I'd give all of you potential 2500 reproducers out there a driver recommendation.
The Vifa OC25SC65-04 1" silk dome tweeter. It has all the right specs and is very affordable.
Keep on studying that more important than B&O, when you get as old as us old geezers you can do B&O and dark side
Evan: In white you say?!?!?! I cannot wait to see it!!!!!!!!
Made an attempt with a BC2500 (got loads of them) in white but, hmmmm, I don't know Evan, have to get used to it! But the Ipod works perfectly (have not used the Ridax conversion kit) connected to the Aux input. Blackrix gave me an idea connecting the audio signals straight to the cassette input. Have to find out how to do that. I made a USB connection at the front bottom to synchronize with Itunes.
Think I'm gonna make the Ipods frontplate in polished steel and the left/right plastic cover back to glossy black!
That looks very interesting! I think it would look better in more light..? The photo seems a little dark.
I like the permanent iPod idea. Hadn't thought about it that way before. That cover piece looks very well made!
I think you've done a great job, Leslie!
Thanks Evan. Took the white covers off (got problems also with the doors, stays open) and put the black covers back in place. One way or another it must stay black. I like the white colour a lot but for this machine it should stay black!
The Ipod gets his power (5Vdc) from the cassette PCB board and also the output signal is connected to the same board so now I can use the tape button on the front panel instead of using the Aux input. Quite easy and it works perfectly!
Sounds like the Overture was meant to hold an iPod. I've always wanted to try and power a USB port off of the PowerLink 5v trigger. Haven't thought of a reason to try it, it doesn't exactly have any good application!!
5V didn't come of the PL trigger. PCB cassette board has a connector with all the required signals to connect to an Ipod.
Yes, I understand yours didn't but I have wanted to experiment with the PowerLink voltage. I don't have any tape players

Ha Ha!

The old Smileys are back
Søren Mexico:The old Smileys are back
You got your wish!!
Finally! Some progress.
Passive filtering for my 2500s has only been a need since day one and I wanted to be able to test them in passive form with a legitimate filter. Not just slapping in a capacitor as I did previously.
What I have made is only a first order - a good starting point.
My target crossover is 3500Hz. The calculated value of what I have is 3467Hz if I remember correctly. I'll take it!
Enclosure will follow, just bought them today. Need to do some fitting and finishing.
See, Rich? I told you I would get around to using those capacitors!
Ta!
Evan, as you might know my knowledge about electronics is 0. You think I could use your filter for my 4 pairs of 2500's I still need to refurbish? I suppose the original grey cap can't be used anymore?
Leslie:Evan, as you might know my knowledge about electronics is 0. You think I could use your filter for my 4 pairs of 2500's I still need to refurbish? I suppose the original grey cap can't be used anymore?
Forgot to add - If you are trying to keep them original then you may want to replace the capacitor with a new one.
My hardware must be fitted externally in a small enclosure.
Evan: Leslie: Evan, as you might know my knowledge about electronics is 0. You think I could use your filter for my 4 pairs of 2500's I still need to refurbish? I suppose the original grey cap can't be used anymore? Hi Leslie, Yes you could. Do you plan on using them with their big brothers - the BeoVox 3000 / 5000? Or plan on connecting them to an amplifier directly? My crossover allows you to connect the speaker directly to an amplifier.
Leslie: Evan, as you might know my knowledge about electronics is 0. You think I could use your filter for my 4 pairs of 2500's I still need to refurbish? I suppose the original grey cap can't be used anymore?
Both Evan!
Evan: See, Rich? I told you I would get around to using those capacitors! Ta!
I thought that capacitor looked familiar!
Evan:Well in that case, I'll be more than happy to fix you up with some crossovers :-)
I'm afraid there is no space left for your filter.
