Hi all the brothers, sisters and experts. I have a pair of BeoLab Penta Active Loudspeakers 1 and one of them stopped working. I put both of them on "AUTO" (whenever you connect your speakers to your ipod they automatically turn on), they usually turn to "GREEN" light when the speakers work but somehow one of them turned to yellow(orange?) and it doesn't have any sound but only a "POP" and when I tried to turn it off by switching to "OFF", it doesnt turn off and the light is still on "Yellow".

Do you guys have any ideas what happened? It looks like a PC frozen situation to me (please correct me coz im new to B&O)

Thanks for your advise.

The yellow light means that the amplifier is faulty and it needs to be serviced by an electronics technician.

I would say that most of these mk1 amps will be overdue a service now, things like the trimmers, and sometimes the capacitors, but they can also suffer from dried heat transfer compound which results in overheating of the output transistors. Like Graham says your amp needs a service. Tell people where you are located and we can give you an idea of where to get help :)

Thanks for your advise!! I just tried to turn it on again it WORKED again lol. but yea I am still goin to ask someone to take a look. but the thing is right now Im located in Hong Kong. I was located in states but moved back to HongKong  last year. they do have B&O dealers n tech here..i just want to have a clearer mind so i might be able to ask some tech guys but not the B&O tech guys to fix it. it will save some cash. i called B&O and asked for fixing my beosound 2300, they tried to charge me for almost a 1000usd for the cd laser. so i assume its gonna be so expensive for this in this case. again correct me if I'm wrong on things. but I'm  seriously appreciated of your advise!!Wink

That's the standard answer at B&O shops, if you have a faulty CD player: 'We need to install a new one' (or if it's an older model: 'We can not get spare parts anymore...'). You can be sure, they won't even look at your Penta's.
The only thing they can do these days is to change a module Sad They do not repair things anymore on component level. (wonder what kind of education is needed to work at a B&O dealers 'service shop' nowadays...or do they need any..?) Devil Whistle

You need to find a decent electronics repair shop, that can actually repair things...

Sounds like the trimmers are slightly out of spec, so that under load the amp is heating up more than normal. Did you notice it being pretty hot to touch? This is a very simple job that any reasonable old school tech should be able to perform for a very reasonable sum of money.

Hi All,

I know this post is a bit old but I have been having a similar problem with my Penta 1s. One of the amps is fine but was getting hotter than normal. The yellow light hadnt come on at all either but wanted to get them tested none the less. I dropped them off today to have them looked at from an old school tech and its only going to run me 120 bucks.

Does anyone know if its easy to replace the surrounds on the mids ?

Hi, it's possibly a potentiometer! Same thing happened on mine the component isn't so expensive it's more labour cost, one of my amps was really hot. the mids are not that tough if your have a competent DIY skill, if your not confident, get someone else to do it

thanks Nick

Yeah, I called a place the other day, they want 30 bucks per mid... so that will run me 250 since there are 4 mids per tower. Seems like a bit much just to have the surrounds done. Do you know any reputable places online I can buy the surrounds that will fit the mids ?

Thanks again

I just had a pair of RL140s refurbished (new rubbers, caps) at $400.  Initially I balked at the price, then reconsidered:

- $1200 new

- $2300 in today's money

- 13 to 15 years of service and pleasure you can't put a price on

$400 to have them sounding brand new is not that bad.  Couldn't run a car for that.

You are very right. I was given these Penta's. The were given to my dad and they do still work but they need some TLC. I took them and I am going to redo the mids, recloth the grills and fix the amps.

I guess 3 or 4 hundred bucks isnt much to pay for amazing speakers that will last a good 20 more years if taken care of.

It's a bargain in the grand scheme of things.  Have the grille cloths redone in black, and enjoy a timeless piece of audio sculpture.

Also, if you're redoing the mids, do the woofers as well.  If one rubber component has degraded, the rest are sure to follow.  The labor will be practically free at that point, so may as well do it all while you're in there.

The woofers have rubber surronds and don't need to be fixed.

Hi I have a not bad-looking pair of Penta1s but have no lights at all.

I was contemplating seeking some fuses on the Wanted board but heed your point above that they will be well overdue a service.

The Speakers are in Devon, I work in Bristol and for my sins I do a lot of travelling around the UK so I could within reason drop off and collect.

So could you give an idea of who to contact for help?

Cheers

Gary
