My Ouverture and Penta 3 have been sitting in our living room for the last few years more as decoration than as a sound system. Lately I read about using a D/A converter and decided to try our 4k TV with the speakers. For some reason the Penta 3 both do no show the display any longer. They play the sound but I miss the display.

Is there a way to find out what the reason could be (apart from having a technician come to our home)?

Thanks.

Hi kraut55,

as far as I understand you, you now have the Penta's directly connected to the sound output from the tv (via the DAC).

This won't guve you any infos in the display, since there are none coming to it.

The display feature is a B&O-only feature, that is (or rather was) distributed through the data-wire of the PowerLink connection.

My mistake. I just wanted to explain that the speakers have not been used for quite some time.

I am still waiting for the D/A converter to arrive. I will connect the digital sound cable from the TV through the D/A and an adapter with the AUX of my Ouverture.

In the meantime I was trying to see if everything was still working and realized there was no display on the Pentas.

Have you just tried unplugging the power to your Pentas, wait about 10 seconds, and plug them back in again - all while connected to your system? This works for me every time, as I sometimes experience the same problem with my Penta III speakers after not using them for months on end upon returning from a long vacation.

Try the video/audio switch on the bottom if the power off and on doesn't work.

Connected to the AUX of the Ouverture (with working Penta displays) you will have A.Aux displayed and of course volumen etc.

@Dave

Power on/off works, I tried the video/audio anyway. No display.

If it's both Pentas without a display - unless they are daisy chained it sounds like the data is not coming from the Ouverture rather than the Pentas at fault. Have you anything else you can test them with, another beomaster with Powerlink for example?

Have you tried different Powerlink cables? Are they in fact daisy chained?

It would be very odd for both displays to fail at the same time.

Powerlink cables need to be fully wired, 8 pins.

Or did these cables work before?

Unplug the powerlink cables and plug them back in a couple of times (while everything is unplugged from the mains) at both the speakers and the overture. This will remove any oxidisation on the pins.

To avoid the 'nasty' A.AUX readout of the displays on the Penta speakers one could get a beolink converter (1611), and connect it with a (short) masterlink cable to the Ouverture. The DAC output will then be connected to the AUX-Link connector of the beolink converter. Finally the Ouverture should be set to A-Option 2 so that a press on the button 'TV' at the B&O remote activates the masterlink connected beolink converter. This would give a nice display readout of 'TV' at the Pentas and a still free usable A-AUX connector at the Ouverture.

The in-out game of the powerlink plugs while everything is off the mains should help, but it should be done at both sides of the cable to be sure Wink

The cables are definitely fully wired, one is just a week old. They are not daisychained.

It seems the Ouverture is the culprit. I connected an RF-cable and when I switched on Radio the display on one of the Penta displays (the one with the old cable) came to life. It shows "Radio 4 24". That does not change, even if I switch to another source/station/loudness. Only when I switch the Ouverture off does the display change to "Radio 4 -- ".

ok

, so at least one comes to live. next thing would be to daisy chain them for a test. Does the second penta also come to live? Then the former used powerlink connector of your ouverture seems faulty. If the second, daisy chained penta is connected with the 'old' cable to the Ouverture does it come now to live? If yes now daisy chain the first penta with the second powerlink cable. Are both live now, then the second cable is ok. if not then it should be replaced.

Also check whether the display changes in the descibed test cases.

Heureka!

After my assumption that the problem was caused by the Ouverture I got my contact spray out and carefully applied a bit to the plugs, Then I plugged/unplugged them a couple of times (@Lee) and everything works like a charm again. Well, almost everything. The tape player isn't but I guess I can do without it.

Thank you everybody for the input.
