Hi All,
Forgive me but I am a rookie here. I inherited a pair of beolab 6000 and beolab 8000 speakers but don't have a B&O receiver. I tried connecting the speakers to a Carver receiver but had troubles when using a standard RCA cable and then splicing the other end to connect to the receiver output. As a test, i used a Bose radio RCA output to the beolab 6000 speaker phono input but all i got was a very loud connection to the radio with no volume control. I really want to use these speakers but don't know how to connect to a source!
Welcome to Beoworld,
since BeoLab speakers are active speakers (with a built-in amplifier), they will need a line-level signal and NOT, an already amplified signal from a receiver.
You'll need either a receiver with built-in pre-outs or a pre-pro, which doesn't have amplification built-in.
Furthermore - depending on the type of your Beolabs - you might need a triggersignal for them to turn on/off.
Take your time reading on the forum (use the search function too) - there are plenty of threads with similar questions (and solutions!).
And do have a look on the website of Steve (at Soundsheavenly) - he is a sponsorof the forum.
He knows 'all' about cables, and would be pleased to answer any specific question, I am sure.

There is a tv - and there is a BV
Thanks for the advice. If I didn't want to spend a lot to buy a receiver with pre outs or a pre-pro, is there another alternative? Would like to experience these speakers but only really listen to radio or music from iPhone/iPad and don't want to build a big system. Would prefer not to fire up the Beosystem 7000
These questions may sound crazy but my beolink 7000 remote only works on the charger (prob needs a new battery which I can't find a replacement) so can't preset stations easily. Also, the overall sound is not very good so thinking it has to be the 7000 and not the speakers. Which is a shame because everything seems to be working
You can connect your Ipod or Ipad directly to the line in on the BL 8000, you will only need a plug connected to the Ipod/pad with left and right wires to the RCA input on the BLs
Collecting Vintage B&O is not a hobby, its a lifestyle.

I'd suggest using cables from Steve at Sounds Heavenly. In the banner below. These cables should be OK:

The price includes shipping (Worldwide) and a money back, 60 day guarantee. Cheap cables will give you problems - either the jack, hum, buzz or lack of quality.
As you may know, you can daisy chain all of your speakers as the Powerlink cables carry bith L and R channels with the position (L or R) set by the switches on each speaker.
If you need any more help, just ask.
Dave.
If you want to use your lab8000s with a phone or ipad just get an RCA to 3.5mm jack cable of a decent length, you would then connect the the left and right RCA plugs into the line inputs on the lab8000 and set the switch on both speakers to line with the 3.5mm jack going into the phone or ipad with the ipad or your phone acting as the volume source to output sound from the speakers.

If the speakers are as old as the 7000 system and the sound is ordinary, possible the rubber surround on the drivers have deteriated.

I suspect the sound issues were related to the mish-mash of cabling and connectors originally and the amp/receiver used. We don't know how old the speakers are but they may also be suffering from the insulating foam issue impacting on the PCB if they are indeed old. I'd be surprised if it's an issue with the rubber surrounds on the drivers but it's always possible.
If we sort out the correct and best quality cables to connect these to the OP's iPod or iPad source, then we can take it from there.
Thanks for all the help and suggestions. I will try new cables and go directly to the iPhone/iPad and see how that works!
thanks again all. hooked up an iphone and speakers sound great. but for some reason, the beolab 6000 speakers won't turn off even when the iPhone isn't plugged in. any thoughts?

Not within seconds, it will take several minutes (unless used with a proper Powerlink source).
If the audio cable from the speakers isn't connected to anything, it can pick up enough mains hum from the surroundings to prevent the speakers from switching off.
