Hi all,
Had my CDX suddenly stop outputting sound, everything is normal as before, spinning, lid, changing tracks...all is fine... just no goddam sound...
Did the regular forum searches and seems the via's (griplets) are the usual suspects for motor/spining problems,.. but as the servo pcb isn't involved in sound output, could it be as easy as griplest on the decoder board?
I read that there was a muting relay that could also be problematic? (like the beocenter 9500?) could I diagnose that in any non destructive way?
I know I can just open it up and sort the via's as a first measure...but i'd like to get some advice on alternate diagnosis before i heat up the ol' iron. ....decoder PCB caps?..or would they cause bad sound.,, and not my situation, which is NO sound whatsoever...

Yes, the muting reed relay itself or its solder joints is the first thing to check.
Not doing the vias is calling for trouble anyway, so do that too to avoid future problems.

Worked on the said griplets with wire and iron on the decoder PCB only, BAM! sound again!!
Couldn't find the reed relay...but as further analysis wasn't needed I will now sit back and enjoy with my 1974 Beomaster 2000, match made in heaven!

I had this exact same problem and shelved my CDX for years until I read this. Did the same, just heated up the giblets. Then no sound on one channel. I had crimped the output wire in putting it back together. Re and re and it sounds incredible. Thank you so much for this post, I am one happy guy. Still use the same system I purchased in 1985.
Hi All... I realise that this is an older thread, but I have just been working on a CDX with exactly the same symptom of no sound output, but everything else working...
Having resoldered all griplets on the decoder PCB, still no sound...
Turned out to be faulty reed switches (contained within the 'kill' / 'muting' relay)...
I will replace with Farnell type 240-9213 glass reed switches...

Did that work for resolving your “no audio” issue? I’m having the exact same problem. How difficult was it to replace them yourself?
to be absolutely honest, I simply bridged the relay contacts on the muting relays...
Then you didn't replace the reed switches? Is there any effect from the relay contacts being bridged?
Would you still recommend Farnell type 240-9213 glass reed switches if I were to do that?
The relays are there to prevent noise in standby.In some decks they are also used to prevent "unpredictable audio signals" going to the amplifier while reading TOC etc.
Why bodge it like that? - Why not just do a proper repair and replace the reed elements?

I agree with Martin.
Reed relays are dirt cheap and a doddle to replace. The other relays are for CDs that have treble boost (pre-emphasis).
In Spotify, for instance, they can't be bothered about that and those CDs are incorrectly ripped, which makes them very bright.
