Hi Guys,

Have any of you got any tips on penta speaker placement? I have a good soundstage width but the depth just isn't there.. Everything sounds like its the same distance away.

I think I got the best sound when they were 3 meters apart and 0,5 meter away from the back wall. 1,5 meter to the sidewall. Slightly tilted towards the sweet-spot, but not directly towards it.

"You think we can slap some oak on this thing?"

Left and Right properly connected?

If you hear both only left (or both right) then it feels that the music is pushed into your head with a big hammer ;-)

They are the Beovox version so don't have the left right switch. They are connected up correctly and I have good stereo imaging left to right but not great depth.

They are right up against a wall and can't really be pulled out much...

Maybe I need new speakers that are more suited to the room.

Ok, that should be enough.... Habe you changed anything? Is this Setup new? Could you change the speakers to anything else to see if there's an issue with the amplifier, the Speaker or the source (cd, radio, tape, mp3) maybe?

I'm certain that the problem is nothing to do with the equipment. The speakers have been refurbished (new caps and surrounds) the amp has been professionally rebuilt. It all works fine and the sound is lovely. The highs are crisp the lows are deep... It just lacks the perception of 3D depth in the soundscape. I'm reasonably sure it's speaker placement and the room size that are causing the issue.

I'm on the look out for some smaller speakers that will be happy accepting 100-150watts and are good without much clearance between them and the back wall (2-3 inch max)

I won't believe that the pentas are to big! I think that there's something wrong! Maybe one or two of the midrange speakers has the false polarity or the frequency divider has a problem! Maybe there could be a problem with a not secure centerd coil during reconing of the midranges?

I know they are wired correctly. I recapped and changed the surrounds myself then triple checked the wiring. All the woofers move in and out with each other at the same time. The cones are aligned perfectly in the midrange and they don't distort at all. The sound they produce is beautiful.

I've just tried pulling them out from the wall by half a metre and they sound much better with more depth in the soundstage... Unfortunately they can't stay there so I'll have to look for alternatives...
