I had a pleasant surprise when I discovered that the Essence Remote has several more programing modes then the 8 mentioned in the documentation.  It appears to have 12 (0-11) before it cycles around to the first one again.   Mode "8" is an IR mode that cues the TV/Aux source by default from my BM7000.

I can't figure out the others but there is atleast one additional IR mode.

Anyone know what the others may be for?

4real?? I thought it was impossible to have it send an aux command. I never noticed mine having any extra modes. A video would be nice 😀 and serial/model number.

Well I can't confirm that it's actually sending "Aux" (until I get out my old Lintronic box) as it may just be the reaction my BM7000 is having to any "other" source command that it thinks it can fulfill through the Aux input.

Mine is SN:24025412 made 6/2015 and sold with the essence mkII.  It did not have a firmware indicator that I could tell.

Here are the modes 0-7 and 8-11 with the 4 corresponding program LED indicators ( "0"= LED on  "_"= LED off)  including the new ones I've found:

MODE0   Bluetooth - paired

BeoSound Essence

0___

MODE1   BeoRemote One IR (BeoSound)

A sound system intended for use with BeoRemote One

_0__

MODE2   Beo4 IR (RADIO)

MODE3   ‘Light’ mode

MODE4   Beo4 IR (BeoPlay)

A sound system intended for use with Beo4 (BeoPlay)

MODE5   BeoRemote One IR (BeoSound (2))

A second sound system intended for use with BeoRemote One

MODE6   BeoRemote One IR (BeoSound (3) )

Could you - or anyone else - present some user cases for these options?

The Bluetooth + IR aux could start playing from a Essence that is connected to a BS's aux.

Meaning it will both turn on the BS (choosing a.aux) and start playing Spotify/Deezer from the Essence. And it would still be possible to skip tracks with the wheel.

1st: Happy new year! :-)

2nd: A very positive and welcome finding and ideal for use cases like the one Leo mentioned! :-)

Thank you for that.

I have two essence remotes and they both miss the additional modes! :-(

Which means for special setups only the new generation can be used.

The table mounted version's serial number starts with 238... on the wall mounted version I can't see any serial number.

How are the newer versions identified?

Can the older remotes simply be updated by B&O? (I remember somebody mentioned the original manufacturer of these remotes here in our forum...)

And why oh why is Bang & Olufsens documentation and information behaviour  always so infamous??

There should be a white rectangular sticker (not sticked !) with the serial number in the box...

If you want to upgrade, I would be interested in your old ones.

Any more news about these new ir-modes?

Has any one tried them out in real life?

Still no further information about these in the B&O FAQ's :-(

Even my dealer did not not even know about these.

Those new modes allow the Essence Remote to work at the same time with IR and Bluetooth.

They are used in the case you have plugged an Essence Box to the line-in/AUX of an older BeoSound/BeoMaster product. Those new modes would send AUX & volume commands (to the old BeoSound/BeoMaster) via IR, but at the same time prev/next/change source will go to the Essence Box via Bluetooth.

Thanks!

Bad luck for me ;-(

My Essence is plugged in to the A.Tape input of my old audiomaster, so that won't work.

Anyway - B&O and the dealers really ought to make this public.

Looking forward to see, which possibilities the new BeoRemote One/BT will bring - maybe there

will be other options there.

Good Morning,

does anybody know how exactly to use the Bluetooth + IR mode? Do I have to pair the remote with e.g. an essence and switch the mode of the remote afterwards or how does it work?

by the way if anyone is interested: Here's how an Essence remote looks partly disassembled. I bought this table version on ebay and didn't know (the photos did NOT show the back) that the former owner had tried to "repstroy" it. I don't know if he tried to bite or burn this thing open... Sad

I thought I would revive this thread to seen if anyone has had more experience with using the various Essence Remote modes. Also, it would be useful to have a better understanding of what the beoplay and beosound modes really do that make them different from the standard IR mode. The documentation available does not provide a good understanding of actually when to use the various modes. When I get a chance, I might try some modes and use my BLGW monitoring tool to see just what is sent out.

I thought of this thread because there is someone who recently posted a thread about connecting a Moment to the AUX input of his BeoSound 9000. The undocumented "extra" modes can be used to turn on the BeoSound 9000, switch it to the AUX, and control the volume while using bluetooth to turn on an Essence and control the tracks. While the Moment is not bluetooth, I wondered if the extra modes could still be useful in switching on the BeoSound 9000 and switching it to AUX - even though it would not be used to switch tracks on the Moment.

The wheely can not work in both IR and BT at the same time. You’ve got to choose one or the other.

And I thought there were no more undocumented modes ?

That's true with the documented modes. However, there are extra undocumented modes that are used for the combination of using an Essence or Core with the AUX input of an IR BeoSound (see earlier in this thread). It sets the BeoSound via IR to AUX and controls the volume of the BeoSound while using bluetooth to control the Essence or Core.

Thanks for reviving this old thread.

That little wheely could be more popular if we knew, what is possible with it (read: with the the newer versions).

The only exact explanation given in this thread is the one from Petrosbeli on page 1 about ir for aux plus bt for the Essence (I guess that would go for the Core as well).

Could there be more?

And how to configure these modes?

Anyone with real life experience, please chime in.

Beo4 IR (RADIO) vs. Beo4 IR (PLAY) modes:

I've always been confused by what the difference is between the two Beo4 IR modes (Mode 2 and Mode 4). The guide says that both are for "a sound system intended for use with Beo4."  That description for Mode 4 then adds "(BeoPlay)" in parenthesis. The only BeoPlay music systems with IR that I can think of were the BeoPlay A9 Mk1 and the BeoPlay A8. The key mapping guide shows that a short press on the top button in Mode 4 is for "Select" and that a long press on the top button in Mode 4 is for "CD." Does "Select" perhaps toggle through sources on the BeoPlay A9 or BeoPlay A8? Having neither a BeoPlay A9 Mk1 nor a BeoPlay A8, I could not test this.

However, using Mode 4 with my BV10, I found that the short press on the top button did nothing. A long press on the top button sent the "CD" command. The benefit that I can see for Mode 4 is if you only want to use the wheely to play CD and never use the RADIO command. Which could be beneficial in that it does not have that annoying quirk of briefly laying the radio before it detects the long press to play the CD.

It could be the best selling remote for B&O as it does work with 3rd party manufacturer Bluetooth devices, too.

- how can you identify the MK2 variant of the Essence remote?

- is there a link mode for the MK2 remote that supports Beo 4 commands?

The MK1 has Beoremote One modes for a 2nd and 3rd system in one room but unfortunately this does not work for Beo 4 compatible products.

I agree with you that a link mode would have been useful. Also useful would have been a LIGHT mode that still uses the wheel for volume. That way, we could have programmed the buttons to trigger whatever source we would want (for example, sources other than RADIO or CD).

I always thought that offering 3 different BeoRemote One Beosound modes was excessive. How likely is it that we would have 3 such products in one room? For that matter, what audio products actually EVEN HAVE an option to use the BeoRemote One BeoSound mode -- which is different from the beo4 IR mode? My BeoSystem 4 uses the BeoRemote One Beovision mode, but as far as I know that's the only B&O product that I have that doesn't use beo4 IR mode or BT mode.
