I have a pair of BL 3's that otherwise work great as rear channels for my home theatre setup. The only issue is when they first turn on they make a small pop/click sound which is very distracting.
The issue is really apparent when watching TV or a movie as they shut down after a short period on non-use only to re-enable themselves when receiving a signal.
I just got some brand new premium cables from sounds heavenly that connect from the speakers to my Marantz receiver through the RCA pre-outs.
An interesting note is that I have new Beolab 18's hooked up to the same receiver on the front channels and they do not make the same clicking sound which makes me think it is not the receivers fault.
I also have all speakers hooked up to a surge protector.

BeoLab 18's. Beolab 3's. A8. A9. A2. H7.
Most of the older Beolab speakers incorporate a relay that switches when the change between standby and on (or vise versa), so it's probably this you can hear click. Newer speakers tend to use a FET instead so this switching is silent. I've never owned a pair of BL3's so I can't 100% confirm this is the case but it does sound like it (no pun intended!) from the symptoms you have described. It should only ever be a quiet 'click' when the turn off, but can sound more like a 'pop' when the turn on because the audio will have already started at this point.
It's rarely a problem with front speakers, as they tend to get a fairly constant audio signal until, but with rear surround speakers there can be long silent periods where no audio is being sent to them and they timeout and switch back to standby.
This is only a problem when using the line input as it works by sensing the audio signal - the powerlink input has a separate trigger signal so if they were connected to a beovision, they would remain on until either you turned off the television, or you switched to an audio mode that did not involve the rear speakers.
The only real solution if it is causing you irritation would be to use the powerlink inputs in combination with a line->powerlink cable with a trigger kit, instead of using the line inputs. Steve @ soundsheavenly will be able to advise further on this setup.
Kind Regards,
Martin.
