Can anyone give me a “comparison test” between S60 speakers and S75 speakers?

I have seen all the specs but would love to know what the difference in listening experience is like.

On paper it appears they are awfully similar with a difference in 15 watts power handling capacity and a 10” ‘vs. a 12” woofer.

I'll explain why I am asking in the very near future. Big Smile

I really rather suspected that it was a LONG shot for anyone to compare the S60 speaker with the S75.

A friend wants to send me a pair of S60 speakers from California and quite frankly, the shipping is going to cost a bundle.

The reason for this question is I’d like to have some idea what to expect before putting my buddy to such an extravagant expense. (He is also sending two amplifiers.)

There is no lack of discussion of the S75 speakers, of which I have two sets, the S45, which I also have, and the M-series, which remains on my “want list.” However I don’t recall any discussions of the S60 speakers.

Any thoughts on the S60?

I had S60 speakers and they were fantastic, in fact i wished I'd kept them - imho suited to a small/medium sized room - very good midrange and lots of bass. I have heard S75s which sounded very similar, however there was some gap in between listening to the two and also different rooms so I haven't compared them next to each other. I think they were much better than S40.2s which I had, probably because of the bigger cabinet and drivers/cross over. Replaced them with Beovox Penta's which are different animal.

Thank you Andrew, I really appreciate your response.

Unfortunately, although I am really, REALLY in need of speakers, I decided to decline these S60’s. Although they function well, one of the pair suffered a 5 foot fall and is no longer entirely rectangular, while both speakers suffered the indignities of cat claws to the veneers and frets for over a decade.

The frets I could take care of thanks to Søren de Mexico, and the veneers quite possibly could have been sanded and refinished, but a lopsided cabinet lives a bit outside of my comfort zone, so I respectfully turned the S60’s down. (I am still going to get the two Beomasters.)

Due in part to your “review” I will continue to consider the S60 speakers in my search for one or two pairs….. but my focus has shifted to the M75, M100, or M150 series.

Thanks again for your comparison which was most helpful! Yes - thumbs up

My mother has a pair of S60 speakers in white from new. Somewhere in the 70's my father decided we needed a stereo and he bought a BeoCenter 3500 together with S45 speakers. He did not like the S45 at home, so they where exchanged with the S60's within a few days, which sounded much better. I was still a kid and the S60 basically are the first B&O equipment I ever saw and heard. The Beocenter was later replaced with a BeoSound 3000 and a BeoLink Passive. That is still the case today, the speakers are still producing a very good sound IMO, and we never had any issues with them for 40 years now.

Well I could still have the offered S60 speakers with all the kudos they have generated, however the vision of a 5 foot fall and the one crunched speaker re-glued and held together with duct tape pretty much dampened my interest.

The very good friend who offered them to me says he is not put-off by the distorted shape or the condition of the veneers as he had decided to keep them and paint them black so as to think of them as “studio monitors.”

Yes, I suppose that could work. Smile

Had them both - has S75s for many years as my main speakers - superb detail at top end and lots of mildly uncontrolled bass. The S60 seemed to have slightly less bass in comparison but they do sit quite a bit higher on the trumpet stands and it would not surprise me if that was the major determinate. Both are lovely speakers though the M75/100 is better with a more controlled bass.

Always good to hear from you Peter.

This thread started out slow, but has turned into a wealth of information. Thank you all.

In short, there is not a bad choice with the S60, S75, M75, or M100.

My speaker search has gone on for so long, but if I recall correctly it was Peter who said the M150 or MS150 was a better speaker as compared to the M100…… although so large that “you could live in it.”

If I have it right, then we can add the MS150 to the above “bucket list.”

I had previous also included the M70 speakers in my want list, but after reading the reviews and the specs decided that I (personally) would be happier with the M75’s with their larger bass capacity.

Again thanks to all for your contributions. Big Smile

Agree! I sold my MS150s as I really don't like the finish of the wood compared with my M100s. They are the sets pictured on Beocentral.

I can not give you a comparison I can only tell you that 42 years later I still use my S60s in my shop and love them.  It does not seem to matter what the head unit is the sound is great.  This morning I used them as a reference for setting up the new custom stereo in my 17 F-150 regular cab.  This is about the worst environment you can find but with the help of the S60s I am as good as I am going to get.  If you look at the S60s with an RTA what stands out is the Peak and RMS curves mirror each other.  That is pretty damn good proof of how accurate these speakers are.  Using the same music I am able to closely recreate the S60's RMS curve in the truck but the peak is quite a bit higher and does not mirror.  That is what happens when the sound waves are hitting just about everything in the cab prior to arriving at your ears.  The only other adjustment I made to the truck was to increase the sub amp gain a bit to increase the volume to overcome road noise.  It is now a bit bass heavy when stationary with the engine off but that is the unfortunate situation you find yourself in when you are sitting inside the speaker enclosure while driving down the road.
