I have just bought a second hand beomaster 6500. I assumed I could operate it via the front panel. on starup it goes straight to radio and i have nothing else connecetd until i get some din to phono leads. however, even in radio i only seem to be able to change channel number cant even increase the volume. cant find any complete manuals on the net to tell me how to do it. Do I need a remote or a control panel to operate the amp?

you need a Beolink 1000 to control the basic functions, and Beolink 5000/7000 or Master control panel 6500 to use advanced functions

Thanks will have to get a beolink. I have a LINN Axis turntable. Will I be able to connect that straight into the phono socket on the 6500? looking through the forum it seems as though I may need an RIAA Preamp?
Some versions of bm6500 has a built in RIAA amplifier, but I don't know how to tell without opening it up.
Most likely you will need an external RIAA amplifier..

The built in RIAA amplifier was an optional extra for the BM6500. Only way to tell if yours is equipped with one, is to test if the signal gets amplified, or by taking the top cover off. If yours doesn't have one installed, you will either need an external RIAA or one of the original, internal ones.

Thanks once again. What I dont understand is why it has a din socket labelled phono if that doent have a preamp stage the other side since clearly connecting a phono is not going to work very well.
That is because many B&O record players has the RIAA built in... Beogram 3500/4500/6500/7000 all has the RIAA preamp, so the Beomaster does not need one when connecting one of those players to it..
If connecting non-B&O players, then you would need the optional RIAA pre-amp in the Beomaster. One is(was) available for Beomaster 35/45/65/7000 if i recall correct. You might be able to find one on the used marked.
