Hi, please bare with me, I'm a little new to the exciting world of B&O!! I have just purchased a BeoLink passive amp 1657, however it seems to have a few extras??... I will be honest I don't really understand what a Masterlink is... don't laugh! Is it like HDMI or Scart whereby it carries the sound etc to the amp for then seperating out to the speakers???...... or is it purely a system that allows B&O products to be operated by a remote control??
As you can see from the photo there is a short Masterlink cable that runs directly from the Masterlink socket into a small black rectangle box attached to the back of the amp, it has 2 holes at each end, cable entry points, also supplied in the purchase was 1m length of materlink cable with a plug at one end and the wire has been cut at the other end. Tad confused????
Going to run the Beosound 3000 (when fixed!!) into the amp and then out to a set of C75's, we don't tend to use the remote anyway so have no real need to be able to turn off the amp with it.
If I dont need the little black box attached to the back, can it be removed, as it prohibits the amp from being mounted on the wall?
If I want to run my non B&O turntable (project debut) through the amp does it go into the powerlink socket, which I assume would already be being used by the powerlink coming in from the Beosound 3000. Do I need 2 amps??? or can you get a splitter/adapted?
Any help and advise appreciated...
Martin
Oh by the way, how do I post a photo????
Ahh, so it looks link the mystery box is ajust a Masterlink Junction box... and I think I can see foam tape holding it on... still need to figure out wether I need masterlink though

yes, it sounds like it was, and that it was installed for flexibility close to the Master unit (1m), with at least one installed link that went through a wall (hence the cable being cut when the Master unit was sold)
As you may have gathered from elsewhere on the fora, the Masterlink has reached a transition point - almost end of life given the arrival of WiFi. So hold on to the unit while you evaluate the future and your options (and store the ML junction and cables safely away for now).
You can always eBay the ML stuff if you decide on another route, and I suspect that ML components will be wanted for several years to come.

NEVER CONNECT A SOURCE like a turntable to the two 8-pin PowerLink socketes of a BeoSound xxxx. PowerLink sockets are preamp OUTPUTS to send the signal to a pair of active speakers or to a power-amp for passive speakers.! You will need a fully mounted (= all 8 pins connected) PowerLink cable (eg 5m B&O item #6271227) betweenyour BeoSound 3000 and the amp 1657
Assuming it's a project debut turntable with built in phono preamp - connect it via a 2xRCA/CINCH <> DIN 5 pinadapter cable using the 7-pin AUX INPUT on your BeoSound 3000.

NO, the 1657 is a stereo power-amp and the PowerLink cable carries both channels.(in your config one of the two PoweLink sockets of your BSd 3000 won't be used)
Ahh... thanks, so turntable (seperate Project phono box) to Beosound Aux, then powerlink from Beosound to amp, got it, cheers...
So what is the Masterlink for then???? still havent figured that out yet????
2121marty: So what is the Masterlink for then???? still havent figured that out yet????
MasterLink = Multiroom-system and/or audio/video integration
To connect your music system to a B&O TV (when speakers are connected to the TV - eg Dolby setup) and/or to distribute the sound to other rooms (BeoLink Active or Passive + active or passive speakers and/or B&O TVs)
So I dont need it then? as I will be using powerlink cable

To Vienna's point take a look at this part of Beoworld ... http://www.beoworld.org/beotech/index.htm
The following diagram is from the multi-page section on Master Link ... give you some idea of the potentials of the ML system
