Hi.

Ive recently purchased a Beosound essence MK2 which works fine with my Beolab 9 speakers.

Prior to that I used a Beosound 9000 with these speakers. This is still something I want to use with the same speakers which leads to my problem.

How can I get the 9000s powerlink output converted to an AV signal so I can put it into the Essence as a 'line in' connection.

Ive tried : -

  • connecting the 9000 in series to the speakers but the creates a hiss when the essence is used.
  • Ive bought a splitter cable which has the same problem.
  • If the Power link isnt connected the 9000 wont switch on from the remote so even if a could utilise the L & R channels on the power link as an Essence input I cant get the system to play
  • I purchased a TYP1614 Masterlink convertor and although the 9000 will now react to the remote control cant get a sound output.
  • B&O will sell me a unit to make this compatable but at around another £700 there must be a simpler solution.

Any help would be appreciated.

There is an official and perfect solution : it's the Beolink converter NL/ML. Your Beosound 9000 would be part of a full networked system. That's the £700 solution.

The non official workaround is to make a powerlink>RCA cable. You can then connect the BS9000 output to the Essence Aux IN. The only problem will be volume control if you already control the Essence with the Beoremote or Beo4 in infrared : both devices will go volume up/down when you change volume. But that's a minor issue.

Hi Thanks for that.

If a lead is made up using the L&R channels to the Audio in on the essence that is fine.

However

With the power link not connected to a speaker the 9000s remote wont switch the devise on. How do i fool the 9000 into thinking that the power link is connected when its actually only using the audio connections?

If you have the newer version of the remote, I would suggest connecting the Essence ito the BS9000`s aux-input. Then you can set the weel to IR+Bluetooth mode. Pressing the wheel will turn on aux on the BS9000, and start playing spotify.

If I understood the info correctly, the wheel will adjust the volume on the BS9000 via IR, and it will skip tracks via Bluetooth on the Essence.

Of course controlling the BS9000´s other function (cd, radio) will have to be done on the unit itself or via a Beo4 (or similar).

Sorry, I think ive confused this now.

I dont want to control the 9000 with the essence wheel control.

But if the powerlink isnt connected to the 9000 (as the speakers are connected to the essence) then I cant switch the 9000 on from the Beo4 remote.

If I connect the essence into the 9000 then the 9000 will have to be on all the time. I want it to be as an aux input to the essence.

hope that makes sense?

the point made is: connect the speakers to the BS9000. Connect the Essence to the Aux of the BS9000 (special cable from PL-Essence to Aux-in-BS9000).

So you can use the BS9000 as known. To listen to the Essence on the BS9000 the Aux is chosen as source.

The BS9000 is a proper master source. You have masterlink on this unit, and you will be able to connect it in a master link setup. The Essence is a simple streaming solution.

I understand that you want the BS9000 to be off, but with the new wheel IR+BT function, one click will be enough to turn both units on.

This setup is the easiest, most functional, and cost effective of your options.

Do you have the new wheel? You should at least try it. I would love to have those functions in my setup..

Another easy way would be to run the tape outs on the BS9000 using a 7 pin DIN to 4 RCA cable, and run the tape outs into the aux in on the Essence. You'd get a line level signal that your Essence volume control would work with, but you'd have to use the Beo4 or such to control the BS9000 as for CD/track or radio channel. You'd lose the BS9000 tone controls though.

Jeff

I'm afraid I'm recovering from the BeoVirus. Sad

You know that the BS9000 has 3 modes of operation, and that if you don't have speakers connected, then you need to select the correct mode.  That will allow the BS9000 to turn on when the speakers are not in.

Consult the manual, but I have my BS9000 with no speakers connected, outputting audio through the SPDIF to my DAC.  I'm using option 0, but the default factory setting is option 1.

Hi JDN1,

Welcome to Beoworld!  There is a simple solution if you wish to use the speakers with the Essence via the existing Powerlink cables, you simply need to clip one of these adapters onto the end of each cable at the Essence to convert the cables to RJ45:-

https://soundsheavenly.com/bang-olufsen/rj45-to-powerlink-compatible-clip-on-adapter-convert-new-2013-ethernet-powerlink-to-traditional-8-pin-din-powerlink

This cable will connect from one of the Powerlink outputs of the Beosound 9000 to the RCA line inputs of the Essence if you wish to add the 9000 to share the speakers:-

https://soundsheavenly.com/bang-olufsen/5-pin-din-to-twin-rca-powerlink-compatible-to-non-bo-hifi-amplifier-receiver-etc-din-to-twin-phono

Please set the Beosound volume to a high level (50-75%) to give you the full range of volume control from the Essence remote.

You then just need a Speaker Sense Adapter for the Beosound (this plugs into the other Powerlink socket on the Beosound 9000 to allow it to accept commands from the B&O remote control without having B&O speakers connected):-
