Hello all,

I recently bought my first vintage radio (I already have B&O quite new devices), a Beolit 505 that I got for very few money.

It was very dirty, and it still, mainly the plastic cover.

But it works very well. FM reception is good, no "noise" when switching volume control.

I have some questions in order to make it better look and possible sound.

- To clean the plastic what product are you using? I juts tried with soap and water but no result still very dirty even if now I can touch it without the feeling that is covered with some glue ;-)

- The speaker inside is in good condition. Only the foam around is very bad and when I tried to clean almost all is removed, like dust. Is it best to add a new one and how do you proceed ?

- Finally the ON-OFF slider is missing. I use a thin object to switch on/off... the switch inside is ok, only the slider is broken. Is it simple to replace ? Is the 707 is the same so I could by a broken one for cheap and take the slider to replace.

Thanks a lot for your advices !

Franck

Hi

The foam you talk about is very normal and I would not worry about it. It should not affect the sound.

The 707 on-off switch is the same.

I used soapy water to clean my panels on my beolit radios and they came up fine but I would be careful using anything more abrasive!

Thank you Ben.

Well noticed and I think I will clean again the pannels with soap and that's it.

The up commands pannel is now clean. All is working in a smouth way. No noise when I scan the FM nor when I use volume level.

It works now with no interruption for almost 6 hours.

I had some doubts with capacitors effect but so far it still works very well on the main. Will try on baterry later now.

Also the sound, compared to a brand new small radio like this is far better on the beolit.

In fact this 505 is a good surprise for its age !

I open another post for tape out usage.Thank you. Franck

I too have a nice 505, and as yours it worked out of the box, I cleaned the covers with hand warm water added dish drops and 5-10 % ISP alcohol, use mineral spirit if you dont have ISP

Collecting Vintage B&O is not a hobby, its a lifestyle.

Thanks Søren I do have ISP alcohol. It is written that ISP can be used.

ISP does not damage plastics, normally,  but on this old aged one I had some concern...

Will try again with soap and if result is not enough will try with some ISP on the back of the panel and will check what happen.

Hi,

congratulation for your BL505!

On/Off button on 505 is not the same as on 707. On your 505 it is a slider and on the 707 it is a push button. But you can of course use any of other sliders, either from a donor 505 or 707 (e.g. volume slider). Other Beolits are not compatible as the 505 and 707 are the only black-alu versions.

If you get one, it is not complicated to replace this slider. You will have to get of the handle and screw of 3 (or maybe 4) small screws which are fixing the black front with sliders to the case of the radio. Than you can pull of the front for 1-2 cm (please be careful, the "FM-searching" sliders bottom is fixed to the  dial string!). Than you can assemble the slider from the side into the lead. It is very good described with figures in the service manual, which can be downloaded in the beoworld service manual database (if you have at least silver membership).

Good luck searching the slider and replacing it!

Regards / Theomaster

The foam prevents rattling.

Thanks Theomaster I keep the procedure and I hope to find one slider soon.

So Martin how do you replace the foam ? I'm quite afraid to remove more than I already did when cleaning it usin a small and very smouth brush.

What kind of foam do you recommend ?

Also for the glue ?

Any advises are very welcome if this can improve the sound (it is already good to me) in a significative way. Thanks all.  Franck
