My new Beoplay V1 40" is connected to a pair of Beolab 9. I have installed the CI+ module for HDTV. However, the main reason why I use my set-up is for audio - mainly streaming from Spotify through Airplay on my Apple TV (3rd generation) and the occasional FLAC file (through media player).

To listen to music, I need stereo sound with switched-off center speaker. The V1 does not switch off the center speaker at P.MUTE, like my old BV8 used to do. So, the only way to achieve a switched off center speaker is to create a speaker group with the V1 speakers switched off. That was easy. However, I have two problems here that the B&O dealer did not know about and that the install guy could not solve either.

1. setting any new speaker group as default is only possible for source "radio", but not for the Apple TV (on HDMI 1)

Apparently, the only way to enable this speaker group is to use the menu, navigate through numerous options and then enable the newly created speaker group manually every single time. That is a terrible thing, because 90% of the time I need only audio. So, for now, I changed the default TV speaker group to have a switched off center speaker, thereby reducing the V1 to a vastly overpriced screen only.

2. even with the new speaker group enabled and with "music" sound mode, the sound is still weird

Even with the above mentioned settings, music still sounds like it is surround signal passed on to a stereo set-up. I read something about speaker roles, but I did not quite grasp it. I may be able to change some settings on the ATV, too, but does anybody know how to achieve the stereo sound I am used to with my BL9?

To summarize: I am looking to listen to high quality stereo music from ATV on Beolab 9 with the v1. I would greatly appreciate your help!

Maybe downloading the "Technical Sound Guide" from http://beoplay.com/Support/Support-Beoplay-V1
will help.

Maybe an option could be to connect the optical digital out on the Apple TV to the digital in on the V1 via an toslink to coax converter. The make a new source (for example use the analog AV which can make use of the digital in) and make a default speakergroup with the desired settings for this. Don't know if this will solve the problem but it could be worth a try

Just make a new speaker group for example group 2. Then with list speaker 2 you can select that setting.

I thought that you also can add speaker 2 as default on apple tv (hdmi1) in advanced settings

Hello keanone

I found your post interesting and thought I might comment on it.

First of all the P.MUTE has always stood for picture mute. In other words, you can turn picture off while listning to music. As far as I am aware, it has never changed the speaker roles.

Second, go to your speaker groups and create 1 for center 2 for left/right and 3 for all three.

When AirPlaying your Spotify to the tv just list to speaker and press 2. Voila ! No more searching in menu to speaker group etc.....

As for your comment on that if the speaker 2 function doesnt exist then the V-1 is just an overpriced screen I say this. You went to B&O and thought the tv was reasonably priced and bought it. IF you had this AirPlay requirement you should have asked dealer before buying. You abviously thought tv was good price, bought it and can't set it up.

This review is pretty good !

Also, what other TV on the market gives you the power to control external devices like the powerful Beo4 remote. What other TV has the great sounding speaker that V-1 has. etc.. etc..........

Just my 2 cents :-)

@madsk - Unfortunately, assigning a default speaker group seems only possible for source "radio", but not for HDMI or AV sources. Pretty weird, it looks like a software bug.

Next week (when the required cable comes in) I will try to add my external DAC to the AV din input. That may help for the sound quality - or so i hope ;-)

@1983beo - thanks, that will make my life better - at least it will take less steps to get to speaker group 2. Assigning it as default seems impossible for any other source than "radio", though. The tech guy even called B&O, but they didn't know what to do either.

@scottyltd

Thanks for your help.

About your remarks: with my previous B&O television (the Beovision 8) it was possible to configure P.MUTE to shut down both screen AND center speaker - and indeed, the speaker option will help, I didn't know it existed!

However, there is really no need to get defensive here. I am a long term B&O user and even had the Spotify with Airplay solution going on for quite a while on my BV8. Also, I read the reviews, which is why I bought this TV in the first place. However, there are some disadvantages of being an early adopter, though. Apparently because this model is pretty new, nobody at the dealer nor B&O technical support itself knew how to deal with some aspects of the software. For example, the manual says you can address speaker groups to any source - but in real life (or at least with the current version of the V1 software), you can't.

Anyway, the B&O dealer did some research and says they may have a solution. I am curious to find out ;-)

I have looked for a way to do it when changing the audio mode but have been unsuccesfull. I will check your suggestion and let you know.

Hi Keanone, I have checked your suggestion.

You can define a speaker group in the Advanced Settings of the RADIO channel.

All other channels (TV, HDMI, etc) do NOT have a speaker group setting.

I connected my DAC to the AV in of the V1, imrpoving the sound a lot. I still have to manually switch speaker group and also use p.mute to switch of the screen. Doable.

But here is the good news. I think the Playmaker may save my problems, if the DAC is good enough! I could leave the v1 switched off while listening to Airplay/Spotify - taking the v1 out of the loop.

...and how would you connect the Playmaker?

How can the V1 be switched off, if the PM is connected to it?

The DAC of the PM is "good enough" in my experience.

How about placing the PM between the V1 and the BL9’s. V1 -> PM -> BL9

If Airplay is activated the presence of the V1 does not matter. The PL-sockets of the V1 are volume controlled, so connect these to the Line In of the PM. You’ll need a customized cable for this. If the PM detects a signal from the V1, it will act as a pass-through to activate the speakers.

I’m not able to test this, so feel free to correct me if this shouldn’t work.

Surely that will work - the cable asked for is avaible at the B&O-store.

BUT I would ALLWAYS connect the speakers to the V1 - otherweise you can't use the high-configurable soundsettings provided from the new engine. You would have no Speaker3 and so on...

if you really want to let the tv "out of the game", when playing music, this might help:

The PowerLink-switch from Almando - look for "almando Multiplay Powerlink-Switch" on YouTube.

Or go to: http://almando.com/index.php/multiplay.html  The two-port version is all you need.

**

This way you might even have the spare linein-port of the PM for a turntable or whatever you choose Smile

Why not? The PM will pass the signal to the speakers as soon there is a line signal detected. No need for a command on the PM or remote. Or did I miss something?

Thinking about it - maybe you did not miss anything.

Just seemed a bit akward to do it that way.

The PM could be hidden away behind the V1 that way. (in Opt. 0 and 'fixed line-out')

Lets see if kernowman is willing to test it - and to post the results.

I wouldn't recommend a fixed line-out if PM is directly connected to the speakers. ;)

Downside of not connecting the PM directly to the speakers is that you always need a beo-remote to select source and control volume and go further with your iDevice.

I can only think of 2 reasons why the PM should NOT be connected to the speakers directly, but used as source connected to an audio- or video-master:

  • if there are linkproducts.
  • In a 5.x setup.

Thanks - forget the: 'Fixed line-out' - and in this case even the Opt. 0.

Working on too many threads at the same time caused disconcentration Crying

P.S. I thought, if you/keanone have/has a V1 you/he would also want a 5.1-setup - but not everyone does.

Did anyone try this set up with PM?? I am in the same situation with V1 and lab4000's and already have the PM from before I had the V1. I am now using Apple TV as this is how we set it up, but can't help thinking the PM was much better for 2 channel music. I use the lab4000's for music mainly. Before I reconfigure my set up and get the required cable, can anyone help? Thanks
