Hello again,

I'm trying to figure out why the tone arm won't drop.  I just wanted to be sure it's not an electro mechanical issue before I get someone who can deal with the electronic side of things to repair it.

When I press Start, the carriage moves inwards but does not sense the edge of the record.  I can halt it manually by pressing > or < .  When I press the lift button, there is no response from the solenoid, nor even the click of a relay.  The solenoid mechanism moves freely with finger pressure.

If I press Start again, the carriage continues inwards, at the appropriate point triggering the change over to 45 rpm (which I can also do manually).  It reaches the End Stop, changes direction and returns home.  Platter motor switches off.

The detector arm light throws a focused light spot on the surface beneath.  The behaviour is same whether there is a record on the platter or not.

For some reason, it doesn't seem to want to generate a Drop Command.  I get a reading of zero volts at the solenoid when pressing the lift button (only accessible with the platter off).

Grateful as always for any pointers.

Simon

Sounds like a problem with the record sensing circuit.
The Beogram is "fool-proof" - it won't allow the tonearm to be lowered where no record is sensed.

Martin, thanks.

Just one more question to help me decide how to proceed.

I believe the detector/record sensing circuit is contained within the main circuit board.  Is there any point removing this board (and any others) and sending them off to be checked out and rebuilt by someone with better technical skills than me?  Can this be done in isolation?

Well, yes and no.
The main board can be serviced and structurally tested etc. but the final adjustments will have
to be done inside the Beogram where it is meant to work.
The record sensing depends greatly on the lamp condition and its placement in relation to the lens system.
It also depends on the distance from the lens system to the platter. These are things that cannot be taken into account with only
the board on the bench.
