Currently sorting thru a Beocord 1600. What about you ?
Hi,
The Beocord looks nice. It has the big AC motor found in the Beocord 5000!
For me, the Beomaster 5000 type 2005 tuner.
Nothing fearful here. I had to do much cleaning, there was a layer of white powder (white rust, or zinc oxide, due to damp storage conditions) all over the silver galvanised steel parts and the trimmers were black. Now my technique is to use Mr Clean for the metal parts, then when the surfaces are clean and shiny, I oil them slightly (Mobil One) and wipe them again.
Oil will also remove the black oxidization on the trimmers quite magically!
The DIN sockets were cleaned too because they started to oxidize. They look as good as new now (just one hour to do that!).
The bottom steel plate will be replaced completely. The real difficulty will be finding the correct paint!
I'll publish the photos when I get the palissander top from Martin. I also bought a new signal meter to replace the really hazy one that came with the tuner.
Jacques
I am sure it will be a splendid and successful restoration Jacques. Yours always are.
Of course the Beocord is part of the set because one must always "complete the set". Did some preliminary testing after a basic recap last night and have some periodic crosstalk and static in the player. comes and goes. when it is clear it sounds really nice especially listening to chrome tapes. i really enjoyed listening to all two of mine. Just need to finish sorting thru the crosstalk problem. the thing will go nuts sonetimes when I eject the tape. Mostly thru the right channel side and the LED dispaly panel comes and goes.
But with all that it is light year better than the dirty muddy sounding mess it was a couple days ago - and the tape counter lights up and works.
Got my parts from Mouser, and missing 2 caps, so will have to wait again, Burkes law I think, no Bvox 3702 before the caps are there
Collecting Vintage B&O is not a hobby, its a lifestyle.
Very nice combo Eugene!
Cassette decks are complicated animals... So good work so far! And thanks for the praise
Bummer Søren!

What are you missing Soren? I generally order speaker caps from parts express or madisound. Mostly because thats what they do !!
Yes cassette players are tricky I think only 1 refurb I have done worked perfectly upon completion. In addition to the wonky electrical fault. the rewind is slow but fast forward works great. and the pause button clutch is most likely broken. but as it stands it will never see much use.more of a show piece and I have another to sort thru at some point.
The beomaster clutch repair is an interesting project. a little more to it than simply replacing a set of washers and calling it good. I am glad I had the sense to pick up a donor for the project for parts. they came in handy on one set a previous "repairer" had "fixed" with a can solvent/lubricant and a sledgehammer.

That's a great looking set right there!

The problem is that I'm in Mex. city. Mouser has a good deal with Fex they include shipping and custom fees if I buy for more than 40 US, by Parts Express I have to order for more than 50 US for them to accept orders from Mexico, and then they charge about the same for shipping, I ordered from ebay a couple of times, shipping priority mail, 4-6 weeks, same time as from Denmark if I get it, Martin send some in December its still not here, lost. I'm going KABUZZZZ here.
I can find it here, but I will have to go to the center of Mex city, that will take me 2 to get there and 2 hours back, spend a 2-4 hours until I find what I need, so whole day gone.
Last news from Mouser, we didn't have the 68 uF bipolar in stock so we didn't send it, when I ordered it was shown as in stock and ships immediately, just like all my order, and they didn't have the need to tell me, so now I sit here without and angry
I see did they give an est ship date, because if it is going to be month(s) of waiting i could probably get the cap you need locally and fairly quick and just drop it it the mail to you.
What is it 68 uf bipolar electrolytic 100V axial or were you pricing polyfoil @ higher voltage? Would a radial cap work ?

It was a 100 V axial, and now its discontinued with Mouser.
Appreciate your help Eugene, if it was that easy I would have done like that long time ago, if you drop it in the mail it will be here in 4-6 weeks. If it doesn't get lost.
I'm of to the center (Zocalo) in Mexico city on Saturday and I will see if I can find a provider that can send orders to me after ordering by E-mail or phone, there is a street named Republica El Salvador, about 2 miles long, with everything electronic, from used tubes to computer components, some of the shops looks like a dump yard for antic electrical devises, 5 years ago I found relays for my 40+ years Jukebox there. I'm going to take a pair of pics of the most interesting ones.
Here it is in all its splendid glory and working great now.I found the fault (it was me). The lube on the pause control clutch had become hardened and sticky. That is now fixed ,similar fault with the rewind, now also fixed. and the LED display panel works. No crosstalk, noise or static. Just sweet sound !
Playing some old Pre-records on it INXS Peter Gabriel etc... New format only seems to allow 1 pic per post.

Sweet!
Some (beep) had re-wired the DIN plugs in the Beomaster 5000 tuner, so that only the TAPE output was working, now fixed. The guy used pins 3 and 5 (?). Was he using a slide projector cable or what?
I'm sick of that kind of fault!
Note the uncleaned yet zinc oxide-infested chassis versus cleaned and oiled parts.
Very nice Eugene, the 1600 project was long over due!
Last night I opened up my BV2600s to itemize cross components and start specifying replacement parts. The 2600 doesn't seem to get much love here on BeoWorld so I wanted to ask a question to you all, would you guys like to see a restoration thread on this? It's a very straight-forward speaker and I figured it would be of little interest. But if you guys want, I will make a thread.
The only reason I ask is because of my mountain of current Beo as well as Dark Side audio projects.
Beo4 'til I die!
I also have worked on the fascia... I'll do better next time!
Before
After
Yes Evan you should do a thread - especially for a unit that you dont see much of. I have an extensive photo essay on my Beocenter 1600 if I ever get around to finishing it. Still cant find a cassette belt - so it sit and sits and sits and collects dust.
there are so many threads on the more common and popular items that a thread for a lessor known would be welcome.
for now I just rest and take it easy - nothing beats coffee and chocolate....
The stuff we see inside these things some times makes you wonder and someone probably paid gone money for some of these "repairs". the second BM1600 was quite a sight inside, broken clutch chassis due to over torque, misaligned everything which resulted in brokem tracker belt drums, max tension applied to all belts, solvent/lube spray all over everything, the on/off switch was in broken in two pieces mostly like from opening the unit all the way without account for cord lenth. Total mess inside.
But now it has passed into the stage of "Done". all control appear to be fully restored no lockups or slips in 2 days. The first 1600 and cassette were part of a set I purchased from the original owner and other than being neglected from non use were in pretty good shape and was the first to come around. It is the closest as I can say to working in "like new" condition. Everything slides back and forth nice and smoothly.
The last one still needs some kind of adjustment or perhaps a shim to the clutch spring to restore smooth volume control. replacing the washers and restoring the clutched controls is fairly straight forward so long as you realign everything properly. The tricky part is getting the "unclutched" volume control back working smoothly. What i did find was that adding belt tension does not fix or solve anything. All three are set at the least tension allowable for a smooth and easy slide. Tension just adds drag stress and friction.
A lot of old plastics inside and the clear clutch casings have become quite brittle, delicate care and handling are a must if you are going to take on one of these things.

Ok, sounds like a plan. I just wanted to make sure it wouldn't be a bore!
Jacques, those 5000 pieces are INCREDIBLE!
Yes; Finally joined the BM/BL5000 club some months ago
Don't know the status of the BL5000 yet as the mains switch is broken
Now that Leslie helped with the broken BC9500 glass panel: Leslie ?????
Or maybe Martin can step in? I could see he has a BM5000 switch panel; could I probably change the mains "PCB"?
Another alternative would be to use some epoxy to glue those 2 parts together again.
Haven't switched the BM5000 on yet.
Repair priority went up lately because of all the positive BL/BM opinions and the solved BC9500 issue
Gunther
P.S. Took me hours to find out how to insert pictures in the new forum; Had to upload them seperately in myfiles and they didn't show in the answer's media select box. Only way was to copy the link from "myfiles" and insert as URL...
P.S.2: I can also confirm "EDIT" found under "more"

About the Beolab. Nothing seems to be broken here. Are you sure it's not a matter of bending something to hold the thing in place Gunther? I'd say the four pins on the switch chassis, which should perhaps be bent one facing its opposite on the same side...
Ah yes, that rust around the rubber feet. A real nuisance. Not sure how to eliminate this... I've also got some around the back feet.
That looks a lot like the broken switch on one of the 1600's I just did and I was able to put it back together. Jacques may be right.
Now moving onto the Beogram 1700 to complete the system matching
Wow, I had never seen a 1700 underneath... There's not much in there!
Trouble is, prices have risen up considerably since the Hi-Fi World articles... to reach silly levels for what was, basically, a good but cheap deck when new.
People want at least €200 in France for those!

Your telling me, I remember I bought my three back in 2009 and never paid more than $90 USD including shipping all complete with working MMC20EN. Now I could probably fetch over $200 for one. They have become very popular in the last few years.
It was Tim Jarmens article review at Beocentral that convinced me to buy my first one. I like it so much I have no interest in paying crazy money for a 4000 series deck.
Very simple basic deck but well built. It has made it 30+ years so far and with a recap I hope to get another 30.
I didnt even realize the RCA were gold plated until I started cleaning them.

The forum and the threads are still, after 2 years effective on the forum, a new world for me and I enjoy every thread about vintage items, on the new forums we have now Wikis and the BV 2600 could be made under Speaker Repairs, the Wikis are good and it will be easier to find the threads.
So yes Evan make a thread.

I bought my BG 2404 some 7 years ago, it came with a MMC 4 and played until last year when our house cleaning specialist against strict order not to touch it, dusted it of and with that the needle, so now its playing with a SMMC 4, I bought it for some 50 US but had to ship it to my customs agent in Laredo TX, they had to pay bribes to mex customs and smuggle it down here, it was my first ever Ebay buy, I love it and play it every week. It also came with the 7 pin plug, with the 2 screw in pins.
Finally I have my Bvox 3702 working, after bad luck with shipping from Martin and Mouser I decided to go to the Zocalo in Mexico city today , in good fate and spirit we started early, 10 AM, that's early for Mexico, after 1 hour we had moved about 1 Mile, to the center its about 20 Miles, I did a scientific calculation and found out that we would get there Sunday early in the morning, I do a lot to keep my vintage going, but this was too much, told my wife very friendly, to go there herself if she wanted and went back home in a taxi.
Well I checked the old caps from the crossovers and the 75 uFs were not to bad, so with some double caps and soldering I got them ready, I already made the boxes and the grills just needed a little glue and final touch, so here they are playing in the electronic test plant
.

Thanks, Jacques
That's what I did but "hemenex files" was empty What I definitely did forget was to click on the arrow to drop down another "hemenex files" line...
Still no way to upload in this box as it was before; Have to do this in my personal page...
chartz:Nothing seems to be broken here.
I would like to agree but the PCB IS broken; maybe this picture shows better what I mean:.
Will try the glue version as soon as I find the time.
For the rubber feet, I'll get some from my tatty little store, they are on the bottom side anyway...
And this unit has seen a lot of moisture obviously - just have a look at that white-powder-covered mains transformer...

Good gracious; your fabric selector really CAN compete with Rich's
The final product - just for fun I made my first tape recording from an LP in almost 25 years. Everything works nicely the beomaster controls on #2 are nice and smooth now. Fits the MC30 perfectly and mates up well with my set of S-45's.

Hey! No fabric selector competes with mine! Just look at my avatar!

Françoise Hardy... Now listen to this great song by Michel Berger, a real gem.
I have done the re-lettering (was completely missing) on the slider of my Beomaster.

Yes, Helvetica.
Looks original Jacques. Did you have some kind of decal transfer made ?
For #3 BM 1600 I resoted to using a spacer washer to add spring tension to the clutching mechanism. It worked !!!

Oh yes, I have that one too.
