I recently purchased a 1st generation BeoPlay A9. It's set up and working...I can stream from my phone (Pandora, etc.) just fine. I downloaded the BeoMusic app, and when it searches for devices, it can't find any. It says to make sure the app and the device (A9) are on the same network. They are. If I open the BeoSetup app on my phone, it finds the A9 right away.

What am I missing?

BeoMusic App is not compatible with BeoPlay A9 1st gen. Only the 2nd gen.

Yes it is. Just not the 'join' feature.

Or at at least it used to be....

Resurrecting a zombie thread, apologies if that offends anyone.

I recently acquired an A9 Mk1 and was able to use the BeoSetup app on an Android device to connect it to my home wifi setup.  That process was quite simple, and anyone who has set up a WeMo or similar IoT device will find it familiar and pain free.

However, as with Gecko85, no other Bang & Olufsen Android app will recognize the speaker.  The BeoPlay app says to go get the BeoMusic app, which has been deprecated in favor of the Bang & Olufsen app.  That app does not recognize the A9 Mk1 on the network.

Out of curiosity I reset the A9 Mk1 and reran the BeoSetup app with an IOS device.  Similar pain-free experience.  I was able to verify that it successfully shows up as an AirPlay device.  The speaker works just fine as an AirPlay endpoint.

But, again just as with Gecko85, there is no Bang & Olufsen app support on IOS other than the BeoSetup app.  The B&O app for IOS does not recognize the A9 Mk1 on the network, despite it showing up as an AirPlay speaker. While the FAQ's from Bang & Olfusen imply that Mk1 speakers will work with the current B&O app, it's simply not the case.

I'm quite bummed by this as it was to be a simple wireless music playback system for my parents, who are Android phone users. Now I'll have to resell and find a Mk2 or go a different route for them.

My advice to future readers, who may find this when researching purchases:

1) If you are an Android User and you want an A9 and hope to use it for something other than a wired connection or Airplay make sure you buy the Mk2, as B&O is clearly not supporting the MK1 any longer in its own apps.  This effectively kills the A9 Mk1 as a wireless device for Android Only users.

2) If you can find a version of the BeoMusic app (no longer in the Android app store) online then you maybe able to use this for some period of time to playback music on Mk1 A9 speakers, but it is clearly unsupported and will likely stop working at some point in the near future.

3) the only viable wireless use of the A9 Mk1 is as an AirPlay endpoint at this time, generally necessitating an IOS device and acceptance of the the AirPlay system's limitations.

Easiest solution would be to get a ChromeCast Audio dingle and connect that to the line-input of the A9 (1st gen).

Your parents could stream all kind of content to it from their Android devices then.
