Hi everyone,
I recently bought a Beogram 1700 turntable and I wondered what else I need to get up and running. Do I just need an amp and some speakers? And if so, are there any that you’d recommend? I’ve not owned a turntable before so any help greatly appreciated...
Thanks
Hello Rob - Welcome to Beoworld.
The Beogram 1700 is a very nice starting point - simple and good sounding.
You need an amplifier or a receiver with a phono pre-amplifier (the sound from the stylus is very weak and is in need of extra amplification.) You can use pretty much any Beomaster up to the late 80's - a Beomaster 1900/2400/2000 would be a good place to start as it matches the design of the Beogram and is of the same vintage.
Notice that there is a 5-pin DIN plug at the end of the cable going to the amplifier - It is standard on all B&O Beomasters and some 1970's receivers. You can buy an adapter if you want to use an amplifier with phono-plugs instead.
Then you need a pair of speakers - Models like Beovox S-45 (the three-way model) is a good and balanced speaker that matches almost all but the most powerful Beomasters made at the time. Be aware that there is a small problem with the woofer magnet - it just needs a layer of epoxy glue on it to keep it in place.
This is where the fun starts - looking for B&O components
Vinyl records, cassettes, open reel, valve amplifiers and film photography.

Hi Sorens, thank you both for the replies, really useful.
(I've also updated my profile now).
I will start hunting out some Beo amps & speakers right away then. So, just to confirm, are there no third party (non B&O) brands that you would recommend?
Thanks again, Rob
It will work with any amplifier and speaker combination - as long as the amplifier has a dedicated record player input. A Quad 44 and 405 combination would be an interesting alternative.

Thanks again, Rob Well, of course you can use other brands, but we are infected with the famous BeoVirus, so thats what we recommend, you can use any amp that has a phono connection with a phono preamp (RIAA). Or you connect to a aux input and put a separate preamp between the deck and the amplifier, Steve at Sounds heavenly (look at the bottom of this page) can provide preamps and cables, just tell him what you got of equipment, or tell us your intentions and we help to find a solution.

To drive the speakers you will need an amplifier, you cant drive them from a record deck.
Hi,
Just reading into this post and thought you might be able to help?
I have a complete range of the 1700 series B&O equipment - amplifier, tuner, cassette player, turntable (Beogram 1700) and matching speakers. I have put them away in safe storage as reluctantly they were taking up space......shocking thing to admit I know. However, I am going to resurrect them and start using the B&O equipment. However, I think that I may need a new stylus for the Beogram 1700 and having spoke with a B&O dealer that are unable to provide replacement parts or undertake repairs.
I was advised to consult a company in USA - www.sound-smith.com who can supply a matching stylus but from what I can see this is priced at about $700USD. Do happen to know if I can obtain such a replacement part in the UK at a more economical price.
Hope you can help in some way?
Regards, John.
Hi John,
You could try http://www.schallplattennadeln.de/ they are based in Germany and can repair your catridge or take your chances on ebay, a few cartridges come up in varying states.

I second that - Axel can re tip the one you have and it will be better than new! Much cheaper! Very quick turn around as well.
