I have a Beocenter 2300, given to me a couple of years ago after a relative refitted their house. I also got a box of related items including a Beolink Passive amp. Having had them for quite a while I finally bought some speakers to enjoy them. I went for a  Bowers & Wilkins 686 speaker set and had a cable made up with a 2-pin din male connector at one end for the amp, and banana plugs at the other.

I got this home on the Saturday and listened to the system joyfully. On Sunday, the amp was dead. I do not know why, I presume age.

I was wondering about a few things more knowledgeable folk might be able to help me with:

1)      Can I connect the Beocenter directly to the speakers or is the amp essential?

2)      Can an Beolink Passive amp be reconditioned?

3)      If neither of these is an option, what do I need to do to use this system?

No, you cannot connect the speakers directly to the Beocenter, the amplifier is essential.

Yes, a Beolink Passive can be reconditioned. Any decent electronics technician should be able to fix it for you.

It is unusual for one of these devices to go faulty. Have you checked the connections.

You are aware it does not turn on until you ask the Beocenter to play something?

Many thanks for the speedy response. My hopes were raised when I saw that it would not turn on unless I asked the Beocenter to play something. Alas, I am almost certain that is not the issue.

Having looked into the connections a bit further the manual states that the Powerlink from the Beocenter 2300 should not be used, but this is what was used to connect the Beolink to the Beocenter. It did work, but I wonder if this caused the issue?

The standard configuration, since Noah built the ark, has always been to connect one of the P/L sockets on the 2300 to the P/L socket on the Passive, with a Mk2 (sometimes called fully wired) P/L cable.

I don't see why it suddenly cannot be used??

You either have finger trouble, a connection issue or a fault in the Beocenter or, more likely, the passive.

I know this might be a long shot - but have you checked the fuse in the BeoLink Passive's plug?
