Help needed please.

My Beomaster 8000 will work for a few seconds then distorts and goes silent. If I power it off wait several minutes it does exactly the same thing again .

Any suggestions please, I had it repaired for this exact problem a month ago at the B&O service centre here in Perth WA and it cost over $400. I really don't want to have to spen that money again.

Also the tuner was dead on one channel and the service centre said obsolete, no parts cannot repair, any help on this would be really appreciated.

I have had this Beomaster from new and it is like an old friend which I want to keep with the rest of its family. Beogram 8002, Beocord 9000 (x2) Beovox MS150's, Beogram CDX2 new arrival.

Regards

John

Doesn't the repair carry some warranty? The normal problem with 8000s is that they need a full set of capacitors and variable resistors - I got a large bag of old ones back when I had my 8000 repaired some years ago. The shop replaced all that were at risk of deteriorating, rather than just the ones that were faulty. That meant all the red capacitors and most of the variable resistors, which have a tendency to fall apart when touched when old.

Your Beomaster will most likely be shutting down because of a DC offset fault in one of the
output stage (amplifier) modules.
The processor will receive information from the amplifier and then issue a shutdown of the
amplifiers power supply.
The shutdown involves a tiny relay click (that you will only hear if no music is playing), followed
by an amount of time where the amplifiers play along on the residual power from the reservoir capacitors.
This length of time depends on the volume and programme content but is usually in the 5-20 second range.
The last sounds from the Beomaster at this stage will be slightly distorted and and it will end up quiet.
They have separate power supplies but both channels will shut down even if only one channel has a fault.
After a "cool-down" period of a minute or two it will agree to power up again but it won't be long
before the next shutdown.

Usually not too costly a repair and, to be honest, something they should have attended the last time
it was serviced.
If they actually DID this repair, they were no good at adjusting the trimmers and I suggest you do a claim
under warranty if possible.

There are some kits available;
One is a general capacitor kit for the Beomaster 8000, in my opinion a bit overkill in your case.
Another kit is just for the amplifiers, containing capacitors and trimmers (the variable resistors that Peter also mentions).
The latter will cure most of the usual faults in those areas but will require a tech guy with
a soldering iron, a little instrumentation etc. It's a cheap kit and I suggest you grab one (email me) and deliver in
for service together with the Beomaster.

Of course, there could be other reasons for the shutdown but this is by far the most common, given
the symptoms described.
