Hello all,
Just wanted to share 2 bugs that I recently reported to my dealer and that are related to the V1 media browser. I was wondering if anyone else encountered these?
Problem 1 is an ugly fault related to the media player / usb connection.
Fault occurs:
- When unplugging the USB cable between the V1 and an external hard drive while both are powered on- When turning of the power source of the connected external hard drive when the USB cable is still connected to the V1 - Exceptionally when browsing the directory structure of a connected hard drive.
Fault description:
the picture turns black, there is a small disruptive sound in the speakers, external speakers turn off, the V1 restarts (green led above blinks, B&O logo appears). However, when the B&O logo disappears, the picture remains black, external speakers remain off. When I select a source the picture appears immediatly (without going through the normal startup sequence) and the external speakers turn on immediatly.
Problem 2 is a fault related to the media player file browser
Fault occurs occasionally while browsing file folders.
Some entries dot not show any filename. These empty entries are selectable. Fault can be resolved by either exiting the current directory and returning back to it OR doing a page down / page up (press right / left arrow).

Hi, I have not yet had this issue but havent tried it either. I have noticed that you can not change the format when using the media player. It is possible to choose between the three usual modes Auto, Auto width and Source (translated from swedish). But they do not work. Same thing on HDMI I think but not entirely sure.
Alot of avi-files is unplayable, which is wery weird since they work on all my other devices. Very surprised to see that my most expensive tv is the one that CAN NOT play them.
Beolab 50, Beolab 8000 x 2, Beolab 4000 x 2, BeoSound Core, BeoSound 9000, BeoSound Century, BeoLit 15, BeoPlay A1, BeoPlay P2, BeoPlay H9 3rd Gen, BeoPlay H6, EarSet 3i, BeoVision Eclipse Gen 2 55", BeoPlay V1-40, BeoCom 6000 and so much else :)

I have not had any file so far that I was unable to play.
Maybe those avi-Files use the DivX video codec - from my experience with the V1, DivX doesn't seem to be supported i.e. the license might be missing.

Michael: Why did they build in a media player that don't work with the most common formats?
Why did they build in a media player that don't work with the most common formats?
Before purchasing mine I had a detailed look at the "supported formats" and also went to my dealer twice armed with an USB stick with different files on it. Here's what I found out:
1. DivX doesn't work, which explains why you cannot find it in the formats overview. So I asked my dealer to place an inquiry at B&O support to fix this. No response so far. I completely agree that a TV marketed in such a way should play all common video/audio formats. As for DivX, this is a software issue which can be fixed... if they intend to. Maybe more customers agree and it gets resolved due to the broader feedback they get then.
2. (referring to your other thread) I've also tried a mkv-h264 with DTS 5.1, which actually worked very well, i.e. WITH sound through the V1's inbuilt speakers. That came to me as a big surpurise but... who knows... Due to the lack of B&O speakers I couldn't try out what happens in a 5.1 situation. --> Maybe someone else can elaborate on this?
I cannot comment on the other software issues because I'm using a NAS and an iMac to stream the files to the V1. Never tried an USB disk except at my dealer's.

Hi MIK,
I should probably also have done that but I took it for granted that it could play the common formats which is so widespread. I mean I can't recall any unit that can not playback DivX made in the recent years. It is just unbelievable. I will take the TV back if they don't fix it. It is not a media player if it can't play media. Why have a DLNA-feature media player when it is so crippled? Unfortunately I think most people don't care enough to complain, ergo: it won't get changed. Interesting to hear that you had success in playing DTS. From what I understand after googling dts 2.0 is that some units can take the DTS 5.1 and downconvert it into DTS 2.0. So perhaps this is what the V1 does? Makes it to stereo, which is OK for the TV but what if several speakers are connected?
I´ll try and see what happens if I send audio like this over hdmi from a displayport-mac.
Too bad the V1 is limited as media player. Also for audio I noticed. No gapless playback, no fastforward and poor interface. But to be honest, I never saw a good embedded video player in any brand TV. Just don’t use it..
Using a dedicated video player, like a Dune or TVIX will make you a lot happier. Or if possible, why don’t you install Plex on your Mac. Besides that these players will play any format, they will give you more features, like a synopsis of the movie, a resume function, a marker if you saw the movie. Especially usefull if you follow tv-series. And so on. You’ll never go back to the V1’s media player.
Michael:It doesn't even play subtitles... I am so tires of this crappy implementation. Tried srt and sub but no luck. Same name as the video file. Not even possible to choose a subtitle. What did they think? And just a stupid cd-cover in the very weirdly laid out GUI. Not at all acceptable..

Michael I am so sorry and feel quite sad that after all your initial enthusiasms that the V1's implementation is now disappointing you.
I can vouch for the usefulness of PLEX and suggest you use that while waiting for B&O to improve the media player support.
I have never liked the directory/filename support that one gets from DLNA media players - I much prefer the intelligent internet connected interfaces of PLEX et cetera.
BeoNut since '75
I'm with Elephant for this one. You have all the ingredients to build a much better video player than the embedded video player in the V1 ever will be. A mac, a NAS, and free software (PLEX) and a beautiful TV. Selling your V1 is not going to make you happier!

Michael, I'd also echo and agree with elephants pertinent comments, and I'm sorry to hear you're feeling disappointed with your set also.
But to my mind, there's another aspect to this, given that we've all discussed the V1 fairly comprehensively, and now that some of us have our sets, are starting to find quirks in setup etc.
Fundamentally, when assessing a new TV for my needs, picture quality (surely the main reason for buying a TV?) was my top priority. Then came sound, and after that, other important aspects of ownership satisfaction, such as the aesthetics of the set, and how it will look in a room when it is turned off; the appeal of the GUI on the TV, and the intuitive ease of use of same, and the feel, shape, form and intuitive use of the remote control.
The addition of a surround sound processer and active speaker array, that can double as an active centre channel in a surround sound setup, is also far more important for me than an inbuilt media browser, as it is a feature that can save an awful lot of space and faffing about with separate racks to carry a separate processor, or receiver with pre-outs etc, plus the conundrum of where to put a centre channel speaker in an AV array using a TV rather than a projector as the main display.
All of these points are way ahead in terms of importance to me than any implementation of a media browser in the set.
Now, this is not to say that I am not interested in streaming media to it - far from it indeed.
But consider, the inbuilt media browser is DLNA compliant, i.e. it is arguably built for the windows world/user, or the Beosound/Beosystem 5/Encore etc, which uses windows protocols to connect.
And, as a Mac user, with what is arguablly the best media browser out there, an Apple TV, why would I need to faff about with the inbuilt media browser?
After all, all it is doing is pulling content from my Mac via Plex or Twonky DLNA server to the V1, whereas the Apple TV is effectively doing the same thing directly from the Mac, no Plex or Twonky DLNA server required, AND allows me to access the internet re youtube, movies (Netflix anyone?) iTunes store movies, podcasts on my Mac etc, etc.
As a Mac user, the Apple TV makes the most sense as a media browser, and from review is said to be better than any smart TV media platform out there. In this regard, I think B&O were very forward thinking to support it and promote it with the V1 in the manner that they have.
I appreciate and accept your frustration and share a little of it - i've been busy over the last three afternoons as my V1 has arrived and been installed, and I've been busy getting used to it, setting it up and connecting kit to it etc, and having some difficulties thus far in getting it to connect wirelessly to my distributed wireless network system - but I'm sure I'll get there in time!
Meantime, the picture quality overall, is easily the best I've ever seen regardless of technology platform re plasma/LCD etc, bar, you guessed it, B&O TV's considerably higher up the ladder in terms of technology and expense.
When I set out to buy a new TV, I was prepared to pay up to A$1,000.00 more for a better picture on a set, over a competing model, plus aspects such as the aesthetics, the onscreen GUI, remote control as mentioned, and overall feature set.
As it turned out, I did spend that and a little more to go with the 40" V1 over an HX850 series Sony with the optional alloy one piece base/foot, or an VT50 Panasonic - arguably the top competing mainstream sets in a similar price bracket.
I also wanted to conserve funds whilst having the latest technology, hence buying a V1 rather than a pre-owned Beovision, so as to allow further investment in B&O speakers to complete a full surround AV system as soon as practical.
On all counts, I am absolutely delighted and thrilled - my B&O Eagle has landed in the form of the V1!
Despite some hassles re getting a wireless connection, which I'm sure I'll solve, my V1 will need to be prised from my cold, dead hands as they say!
Just superb!
I've worked/sold in the HiFi/AV industry in the past, and anything you purchase these days is seldom free of compromise in some area or another, where you will find either fault or disatisfaction, but from this initial experience, B&O does it right across far more areas of importance, and more consistently than any other brand I have yet sampled or owned.
Hope this helps in some way re a new owners, and future B&O purchasers perspective.
Kind Regards
John...

For someone who has worked in the HiFi/AV business you should know better.
DLNA is a system standard protocol between devices and has nothing to do with Windows. Apple could be DLNA certified, but they won't because they have to some extent open up their systems.
That said, to some extent the most limited media player is the Apple TV. It can only play iTunes stuff. So f.e. no DivX, no Flac and a lot of other formats. An Apple TV becomes interesting after jailbreaking and installing XBMC or PLEX.
BS5 & BS5e connect to media servers! This has nothing to do with Windows (media browser) protocols. The only protocol it can't use is iTunes.
So almost all other media servers you can use on your Apple stuff, the BS5 and BS5e can connect to! And note they are often the same as the one used on Windows.
General note: I get so fed up with the supremacy attitude of the Apple addicts on this forum.
Note: this is written on my iMac.

Hi There
I apologise for having made you so annoyed with my attempts to assist Michael via my remarks to him, that have caused you to reply in the spirit that you project.
In my defence, I'd mention that I'm far from being an Apple addict, as I own two Macs (desktop & laptop) fully up to date re software etc, and also a fully up to date Windows laptop running Win 7 Pro, and a Windows netbook.
However, out of preference, I tend to use the Macs pretty much everyday, and the windows machines occasionally.
I'm not going to tell you one is better than the other, any more than I'll tell you that B&O is better then ES Sony, because in all likelihood, it technically isn't.
Nor do I consider myself to be an I.T. expert, as the field of I.T. is so large, one can usually only really achieve specialised knowledge in one or two specific areas, or a little bit of knowledge over a much wider area - at least in my experience - yours may well differ.
If you've read any of my posts, you will realise I'm very new to the B&O world indeed, having just made my first serious purchase, so have not owned or setup a Beosound 5/Encore etc, but rather gleaned general information about them from forum comments, which may well be wrong as regards their capabilities and connection protocols - I was under the understanding that they connect to other media servers which are DLNA compliant, and not the likes of iTunes.
You appear from your comments to be an tweaker *** computer guru, and I congratulate you.
Speaking only for myself, having been involved in the obsessive rituals of Hi-End HiFi for many years, sidestepping from that experience into the computing equivalent is not something I wish to endure - indeed my whole raison de etre for buying into the B&O world, is to attempt to get away from the clutter and tweaky pseudo science of the obsessive and arguably neurotic high end hifi scene.
And to a similar degree, I think that is why I have an preference for Apple products - not because I think they're technically better or superior, or that I have 'attitude' as an 'Apple Addict" that you accuse me somewhat unfairly of being.
It's great that you can jailbreak an Apple TV and good on you.
For me though, with the greatest of respect, I would not be overly interested, as I'd rather be spending time with friends, or listening to music, watching a movie, going for a drive in the country, or heading away for a great weekend with that special person, than spending time tinkering with computer gear.
At the end of the day, I guess I'm more interested in the result than the means of getting there with both computing and Hifi these days. Or in other words, I just want it to work, and spend my time doing other things which to me are more meaningful and pleasurable in life.
However I appreciate that for some the whole tweaking jail-breaking thing is a hobby, and good on you - but with all due respect, it's not one that's for me.
I hope that you may be able to help Michael in some way; he seems a nice guy and after making a decision to buy B&O product, is unhappy with the media browser and thinking of selling the TV.
I made a post presenting the Mac argument, simply because as I understand it he is a Mac user, and hence it should most likely work the best for him.
On the other hand you may be able to help him more than I, and certainly helping each other should be what this forum is all about - I hope you'll agree.
Respectfully yours
@John
thanks for the fine answers and nice insinuations. I highly appreciatie.

Nicely written John! I hope that you are having fun with your V1.
I'm totally with you on the Apple TV option. It's certainly the way that i'd do it. I've been using iTunes since day ONE and I find it absolutely ROCK SOLID! 100% dependable - we use it on a pro -/ broadcast level 24/7 too. I wouldn't touch that B&O media player in the V1 with a barge pole considering their lack of intelligence in the software IT department. B&O are obviously very keen on the Apple TV route too, if they weren't, they certainly wouldn't have designed a television that a space for an Apple TV box ;)
Anyway, I hope that you are enjoying your purchase!
Have fun!

Sorry for late answer but I have not been able to answer yet. Had other issues to take care of :). I also use Plex a bit but I don't like the interface very much. HOWEVER I have my V1 in my bedroom and I bought it to be able to have a good system without any other boxes or speakers. Using Plex would require either a Mac or that I jailbreak my Apple TV. None of them seems to be perfect solutions. I havent tried the jailbreak but the TV has built in DLNA media player. IT SHOULD WORK! It doesnt work very well but it is possible to upgrade the software and we need to complain about things that doesnt work.
I have a DLNA-client built in to my old bedroom tv and the one in my living room tv is flawless. it works very well, has support for subtitles, you can even change the size of the text or delay. This should work on a V1 also, it is 2012 and it says that it play media. I won't accept that it doesnt work.
DoubleU: I'm with Elephant for this one. You have all the ingredients to build a much better video player than the embedded video player in the V1 ever will be. A mac, a NAS, and free software (PLEX) and a beautiful TV. Selling your V1 is not going to make you happier!
I won't sell it. But I think they should take it seriously. It is a feature of the TV and it is not very well developed right now. They need to fix it and understand that they are B&O and should not make crappy implementations.
I mean, if my question was about the cd-functionality of a BS9000, then you would not suggest that I plug in another CD-player right? Or another brand fm-radio. And as I have said. The V1 hangs in my bedroom. I want a simple solution and I was counting on the built in media player since I have good experiences of other media players. I have an Apple TV squeezed in the back of the TV but it does only work with iTunes and iTunes-enabled servers that host media files in Apple-approved formats such as h264. Much of my media is in other formats. I do not want to re-encode everything and loose more quality either. Nor do I want to jailbreak the Apple tv to be able to stream media that the V1 was supposed to be able to do.
Hi John,
Thanks for your very long answer and sorry for not answering yet. I have had a lot to take care of. Listen. I do have macs, I praise good design above everything, that includes function. I do care a lot about what I buy, what I use and how I use it. I purchased the V1 for my bedroom, where it also hangs.
I have an Apple TV in it. The Apple TV can stream media from iTunes or AirPlay, it can not work as a DLNA client or pull media from regular network disks or even play media that is in divx, xvid, matroska etc. It is not made to be used that way. I use it to "beam" media from iPhone, iPad and my Macs in Mountain Lion to it and it works very well. I also rent movies with it online.
The V1 has a network media player built in to it. It has wifi and it has ethernet. It is the first B&O TV to have these features to play media over a network connection. This was for me a good thing when I bought it since I want to be able to play all my media in my bedroom. For example I usually watch an episode of Frasier every night.
I used to play a DVD but I have everything stored digitally also. I would be able to pull it over wifi to the V1, and it do work. Not very well but it works. But if I want to play a Divx for example, then I am stuck. I have to open my mac, connect to the NAS and AirPlay mirror it via the Apple TV. Not very user friendly, especially in a bedroom. I do not think this is a small part of the TV. It does not have a DVD player built in, or a VHS player, it is made for digital media and thus it should work very well with it.
I do not want to put a computer with plex, or a media player on the wall. I do not want to jailbreak my Apple TV for a half-crippled Plex-solution (perhaps it works, I will try to check it out). I just want the TV to do what it can do. The picture quality is one thing, the sound quality is one thing. But for me a very important thing is the navigation and ease of use. I do not like 50/50 solutions. I want rock solid solutions.
I am very technical and I like to use different systems all the time. I have bought a TV with a media player built in. I want it to become better. I have tried to send B&O information but I can not get a response from them. I tell you guys about it and all I hear is that I should put another box with my TV :).
I am just a bit upset that it doesnt work much better than this yet. I know that they can make it work and I won't stop complaining until it does :). Regarding picture quality I do not think it is completely perfect but it is good. If I look close to the screen I can see strange dithering lines in the picture but perhaps they are there for a reason. Also I have noticed a hissing noise from the speakers when there is no sound on the or if I lower the volume. I do not like this at all but it can only be heard close to the TV. But it should not be there either.
(This is written on my Mac also) :P
Alot of answers now and I hope I don't seem to be angry or something. I am not very upset either but perhaps my language makes it sound like it. I am just trying to talk about the TV and how it works. Since it has a media player, it should also work as a media player. I believe B&O can do better work and I think they should be ashamed for how the feature now works. It is horrible! Alot can be said of the TV but I am now focusing on what is not working well. It has its quirks. Like the hizzing noise in the speakers when listening close. Green/greyish flashes from time to time and information that is incorrect (it says that it can record in standby to a usb key for example).
It is impossible to play subtitles or recover where you left of in a file. It is equally impossible to change the format of the video-files you are playing with the Format setting.
And many other problems also but to tired to write them all down now =)
sorry to hear that you are so tired -- I hope it is "only" work that is causing you long hours -- always remember to take good care of yourself
Michael:Using Plex would require either a Mac or that I jailbreak my Apple TV. None of them seems to be perfect solutions. I havent tried the jailbreak
my view is not to use jailbreak -- why take the risk of complicating one's life ? my days of technical adventures for fun are over

I understand -- yet us hope the improvements come sooner for you

I just realised that I should have explained how I use PLEX -- it is not ideal but for the moment it might help you.
PLEX (9 I think) came as a client/server. So I run the server on my MacMini with all sorts of different formats.
I run the PLEX client on my iPad.
I sort through the nice lists of TV series including having information of which I have not finished, and I am able to restart where I left off, or go back to the beginning.
Once I have started playing inside the PLEX client on the iPad I then invoke Airplay to the ATV.
This means the only extra device I need in the (bedroom) is an iPad which can make a good alarm clock

I have moved my media files from a hard drive (connected to the V1) to a DLNA storage that I am accessing over WIFI.
Problem 1 has occured only once. Unable to reproduce.
Problem 2 still occurs occasionally. Unable to reproduce.
Forgot to mention problem 3
I have installed a DLNA server (Twonky) on my mac and I am accessing this over wifi with the V1 media player.
When I add media files to my server (add files for example), the added files do not appear in the media player.
I have to turn the V1 off and back on again in order to force it to reload the contents of the dlna source.
Use an Apple Tv - like b&o have one in their adverts.
It hides in the back and you don't even have to look at it.
Personally I'd have it the other way round.

Maybe B&O can come up with a future update to meet some of your criticism about the V1´s internal mediaplayer?
Well, I bought an Apple Tv for my V1. It´s far from perfect because of how its integrated in iTunes. A way to get around it would be to install Stream to Me/Serve to Me on the iPhone/Computer. AirVideo is another way to get around Apple Tv´s limitations without jailbreak. I have not tried any of them yet.
Michael:I appreciate that you don't wish to jail break your Apple TV. I have done this and it picks up my NAS for formats I have ripped that aren't iTunes compatible. It's not a half baked plex solution. It just works. That being said, I wonder if you swapped your Apple TV for a roku or a WD player if that could be controlled ? Makes me think. Michael i am also with you in relation to the media player on the v1. The tv is designed around a digital platform and as such should be absolutely dependable in delivering this. I have heard on this forum that b&o are supposedly not good at software development, and I disagree (apple maps on ios6 anyone?), but its an opportunity for them to listen. I wanted to buy a v1 for my bedroom too and I was planning on using the inbuilt media player for the same reasons as you: it's a bedroom and you don't want additional speakers, boxes, etc you want an all in one solution that should live up to the marketing message. I will hold off on the v1. On another note, I was offered 20% reduction on a bv10, but now will wait and see what October brings. I too have been an early adopter of many things, but lately I haven't been doing what I used to, rather have the perfect solution that's right for me. I am happy you purchased your v1.

Hi Michael,
Thanks for your well formulated message. I have not had the time to jailbreak my Apple TV but of course I could (I was hacking the first iPhone using pliers and a shortcut to reset the baseband to be able to work around the carrier lock so I think I still got it :P). Work and other things takes up more time in my life now than before and I just don't have the time or energy to spend on solving issues like this right now. - Which makes me a bit confused when things I buy don't work properly as I expect them to. But of course this can all be resolved in software and as you say, being an early adopter means issues, however the fun in it makes it all worth it, right?
I will never put a roku, wd player or any other device in my bedroom with my V1, I trust that B&O can make it a bit better and the Apple TV gives it a few good features I use sometimes like airplay for video and music from my iOS devices and Macs.
I think B&O has been better at software before, like on the avant. Very simple menus not very funny but instant, speedy. The menus on the V1 is quite slow, not always very obvious and makes me confused. They are nice but slow and messy. About the iOS 6 maps I also think Apple should have kept it under beta for a while longer until they get it a bit more straightened out. Google Maps was awful when it arrived on the first iPhone but their data has been getting better and better - it is the same with Apple Maps but now everyone is used to a working map-app.
I love the V1 in my bedroom. It is calming and white, very discrete and also very good at doing its job. Great picture, great sound, great remote, great design. Not perfected in software however - but I was expecting it, and discussing it (even if some thinks one just complains) =).
Now I should work a bit more, getting so sleepy talking about bedrooms.

I think they will! Have you tried the media-"app" on the V1? Displaying its awful B&O cd-cover all the time :P

MacRummors had an article that Apple could have waited another year before pulling the plug - and there was even the implication that the break was partially caused by both sides demanding more from the contract they were negotiating.
And I saw a report somewhere (sorry I can't remember where, maybe Ars?) that the only way to "fix" so many geographically diverse errors was to crowd source the corrections.
But I have no idea how Salvador Dali got to picture so many of their 3D bridges

And Paul W was vilified for saying B&O software was crap.
I think he's owed an apology.
Thanks Flappo! Hehe Yes I think I am!
But seriously, i'm convinced that the BV10 is simply the nicest television ever and with an Apple TV box it's worry free.
I use Handbrake to convert other file types to MP4 and it does a wonderful job. Each to their own I guess.
