I'm not sure but I have seen both types. My guess would be because of problems with the connection reliability of those cables. It took quite a while reworking and adjusting those connectors/cables before my Beomaster 8000 was stable. I love the Beomaster 8000 but the cables can be a real headache. I see that Beolover has come up with new cables for the receiver. I am looking into a similar solution on a troublesome Beogram 8002 I am working on that behaves erratically due to a cable problem between the main board and the control panel.
I'm sure B&O engineers felt the design was good and provided easy maintenance of the equipment when they chose those cables and connectors. They seem to be a pretty common source of failure now thirty years later.
