Dear All,
New member here and reliving my childhood with a Beocentre 6500. My father owned an electrical retailers and stocked B&O equipment in the 80's and 90's. Delving through his old stockroom I have aquired "brand new", never unopened a 6500 system including the MCP.
Upon setting up I have found that the MCP wont work for volume. I have looked at various threads and opened up the MCP. It looks clean and I have cleaned the contacts, microswitch and the opto sensor with contact cleaner, still nothing.Turning the voulume dial doesnt wake up the system. All lights work etc and I can see the treble, bass and balance settings, just cant adjust them with the dial.
The rest of the functions on the MCP work and I cant control the system but its so loud I cant have it on! I have no way of turning down the volume.
Any ideas or is it just too old?
Cheers
Andy
Hi.
Wow, that's quite a find. When you say 'complete system' does it include the CD player and tape deck ( and even a record deck)? If so its definately worth keeping and if necessary restoring. I'm sure a Beolink 1000 or Beo4 remote will operate the Beomaster, including the volume!
Which speakers will you be using with the system? It will drive both Beovox and Beolab speakers.
Graeme.
Hi Graeme,
Yes it was a great find. I have been looking for years on eBay but prices have been high and never trusted that it may work. Yes complete system as such with beomaster, cd, cassette player ( aluminium, but also had white so I took just one), Beogram 6500 and a beogram 8500, both with MMC4 cartridges along with 2 spare MMC20. All boxed and unopened.
Of course the MCP which I am having difficulties with. Fortunately they put the batteries into the polystyrene as there was battery leak from the Varda batteries but the MCP is immaculate as you would expect, shame the volume doesn't work. Cleaned and inspected the opto and micro switch. I wonder if I can get a second hand one and switch the parts?
Speakers: in abundance! Currently have redline 45.2 in white connected, but have access to redline 45.2 in grey, beovox 5000 (blue), redline 140 (big for the room), beolab 5000 (needs rewiring for uk plugs). So I am all set to go.
I have an iPad lead from eBay so I can sort of listen to music from my phone as I can control the volume from the phone/iPad but it's not ideal. No other functions can work because it blasts out far too loud, the neighbours may complain.
so it looks like I will order a Beolink 1000 from eBay. Beo 4 looks too expensive, ideally I would like a fully working MCP.
Check the capacitors on the boards, i have seen several exploded in the MCP's.
The switch decides UP or DOWN, the opto is responsible for the increments. Check the increments, it is a White/black adhesive tape around the wheel... and ist has an own power sticker... missing/open? Cleaner is not good, maybe the tape is gone now?
Hello,
checked capictors as the rest of the MCP works no problems.
tape looks in perfect condition. Stuck down and definite black and white. Cleaned the opto sensor too in case that was the issue but still no joy.
I suspect the switch as it doesn't wake up the MCP when the dial is turned.
can I get another switch from somewhere? Not sure about spare parts and replacing capictors is beyond my skill level. My soldering isn't great! Apart from not knowing what capacitor needs replacing etc.
Thats quite a selection of speakers to choose from. I think my choice would be the RL140. I've never heard them but they always seem to be well liked on this forum, and they are big. They may need to be checked for deterioration on the bass drivers due to their age though.
You certainly have landed on your feet with that system, I'm lucky if I find 50p down the back of the sofa! 😀
it would be good to get the MCP fully functional to keep the system totally original. Can't offer you any advice for repairs, sorry, but you do have the Beolink 1000/ Beo4 option to fall back on if necessary.
The MMC 20 cartridges won't be compatible with your beograms. (Guessing you already know that anyway).
Enjoy!

Just a thought!

My BL 6500 is set up with RL 7000 speakers. Almost same as your Redline 140. Super combo if you have the room.
You should get a Beolink 1000. They go well with the 6500.
And you should contact Martin / Dillen on this forum. He will know whats wrong with your MCP.
The MCP IS nice and complements the set, but a Beolink is easier for everyday use.
Office: Beomaster 3000-2 with Beovox P45 (all in white)
Living room: Beomaster 7000 and Beogram 7000 with Beovox RL 7000 (all in white)
Kitchen: Beocenter 2300 with Beovox 4500 (not available in white :-(
One on eBay now. If you want to get a shipping rate from him, ask that he remove the batteries before weighing, as they're probably heavier than the MCP.
