Just bought a second hand Beosound Overture. The CD player doesn't load tracks or spin. The laser moves up and down trying to focus for a second or two then nothing. The tape machine works. I cleaned the laser, no difference. Can anyone suggest what is the likely problem before I start opening it up?

Many thanks

Hi,

If it's a CDM12 (linear movement) then you'll probably have to replace the unit.

If it's a CDM4 (circular movement), replacing a single electronic component (capacitor) may solve your problem...

Thanks, it's a CDM12. Do I have to get the exact same one? - seems there are variants available.

There are several threads on this subject here (new and old forum) like these:

http://archivedforum2.beoworld.org/forums/p/189/72406.aspx#72406

--> use the search function of the forum with "cmd12"

The ribbon reads 3067 EF-20A and the chip is TDA1302T

My research suggests I need VAM1202 unit, am I right?

Also the product info on a VAM1202 on ebay says "To replace the traverse mechanism it is necessary to remove it from the old loader by unsoldering the connections to the spindle motor, sled motor and limit switch"

So there is soldering involved in all cases?

Get this one....

http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-Original-VAM1204-CDM12-4-05-Laser-Head-Lens-/181308914842?hash=item2a36da7c9a:m:mtAcy4VdwVJ0ZDmKAB0wNkw

I have bought a lot of lasers from here, they work perfect for Ouverture/2300 with CDM12 units....

You do not need to solder... just take out the old unit, remove the back PCB, watch out for the 2 cables, they need to be removed from the connectors by pressing the sides of the connector back towards the cable.. dont just pull !!

Then just remove the motor, the 2 gears, and then the laser it self on the slider... move the slider on to the new laser, and reassemble again..
