I took my Cd50 in for repair because it would load the cd sometimes and play after some time shutting down system powering back up once got it to play through whole cd but after putting in different cd had to go through same type of process. The tech at L & N electronics in Daly City said it was a bad laser but that they aren't made anymore he said I could recycle it or pick it up because not repairable He said he got it to play sometimes also I trust they know what they are talking about but not ready to give up

Any ideas would help because I really liked this CD player

The laser's in these machines are very robust, but the techie is correct,it does seem like a laser problem. However, several other problems can cause the same symptoms.I think there is a thread on site about "the usual suspects",but certainly I would investigate further. These are great machines, but you probably need to consult with an engineer who has B&O experience.

Don't give up on it yet sir,get a second opinion!

Why don't you just change it for a cd5500? Better cd-player by far, and the opening mechanism is much cooler.

I have my cd50 standing around to get repaired, but only because of emotional value.

The  technician that has my CD player is a certified bang & olufsen repair facility he said that the laser head was bad he readjusted it but some of same sporadic problems and of course he said they don't make laser head anymore

I think I will get 2nd opinion anyway like you suggested

Thanks for words of encouragement

I was thinking of that however I'm not sure that works with the rest of my B&O 5000 system

Do you know if there are any problems with that?

thanks for your suggestions

I cannot say for sure, but the cd50 and cd5500 both work with the Beomaster 5500.

I am quite sure there is no difference, but some of the guys in slippers have to answer Big Smile

The disc loading tray is a bit goofy on the CD50, that's true - but that's usually because of regular service neglect.
It's a much better deck in many other ways, - just look at that laser block and the way it operates.
Faulty lasers are rare. When a laser fails, it's almost always because of bad service, physical damage or (very) wrongly
adjusted laser current etc.

It's much better sounding deck too. The CD50 is warm and pleasant, the CD5500 is cold and sterile.
If given the choice, I would grab the CD50.

More trouble than they're worth IMHO.  I was going to say that you could probably pick one up on eBay for less than it would cost to repair yours.   There are currently five listed on US eBay.   ALL 5 are being sold for parts/repair.  That should tell you something.  The CD 5500 is more reliable and is compatible with your system.  Same dimensions and brushed aluminum face.  Just not as analog sounding as the CD50.

Most you will see for sale will be faulty as they are all the same age and all over due a good service, I listen to one everyday and in my opinion it sounds better than all the later models, well worth getting restored, buying another that just happens to still be working will still need a service sooner rather than later

Damn.. Now I need to get started on fixing mine. I was sure I read somewhere that the cd-player in the cd50 was low quality Sad
