I have a good 7002 and a poor condition 7000, I intend changing the springs so the perfect lid above the record will stay in the raised position. Has anyone succesfully installed a spring without cracking the perfect perspex lid ?

The lid is not the problem. The long black plastic bar that holds the spring is.
It has three protruding tabs that will almost always break off. Fortunately, it's not
very difficult to araldite small pieces of fiberboard on instead and if given a little Dremel TLC and
a drop of black paint afterwards, noone will be able to see the repair.

Thank You Martin, I will have a go. I think it may be a job that need more than 2 hands to try and keep equal preasure over the whole area while the screws are tightend equaly.

I got my Son to help me change the spring and it was no different when we had finished. On close inspection the middle hing on the black plastic strip had been broken so there was less friction to hold the lid in the upright position. Luckly I had yet another pre 7000 /7002 chassis with a broken lid but the plastic strip was intact.

In all we changed the springs three times without damaging anything. I now have two woking covers, one perfect the other badly marked.

After protecting the perspex from the wokbench with carpet. We found the easy if you could call it that. First find a bolt 5 mm longer than what was in origainally and fix it together with this realy slack, I held it in place while my son positiond right hand end screw then left end screw then we concentrated on the center pressing down hard while changing the screw and using two flat screwdrivers to position the spring. The srtrip has to bend a bit but nothing like the amount if we had used the short bolt.

After using the record player with a droopy lid it takes some getting use to not holding lid up with my elbow while changing a record.

Sorry for such a long post but I hope It helps others tackling this on first sight daunting job.

John
