Yesterday I bought a beosound5/beomaster5. I already had 2 beolabs 5 connected with a vintage beomaster 7000 by power link connection. I wanted to connect the beeomaster 5 the same way, but I Read that I also had to make a connection by the SPDIF.
Is this necessary for good working of the Labs. So yes, what kind of cable I must use (a B&O cable?) or....
THANKS
No - the BS5/BL5 combo doesn`t need spdif - will work with Powerlink.
But you can use any spdif cable with rca plugs. To select spdif sound you must use a BS5 source in CD mode.
Stefan
With the Beolab 5 you have the option of running an untouched digital signal all the way to the internal attenuator, located just before the ICE power output stage!
It will definitely work with Powerlink too, but that process involves at least three DA/AD conversions along the way effectively reducing the dynamic range, and the noise floor will be slightly higher.
I would highly recommend connecting the speakers using the digital input, as well as the Powerlink required for operating the speakers!
BTW It has to be the fully populated MKII Powerlink cables!
Hi,
In order to get the BL5 fully responding to your system, you need to connect BOTH Powerlink and SPDIF.
Kind regards,
Yann.

Thanks Stefan, so I go to connect my labs.

Thanks Beovox141,
I start with only the power link connection and then look for the digital connection.
Do I understand you good that the fully populated MKII Powerlink cables includes the digital connection?Catrijo
No, the Powerlink is an analog connection only, but it does carry a control signal as well!
Look at it this way, the Powerlink will have to be converted to a digital signal in the Beolab 5, before the DSP can start doing its calculations!
In an ideal world, you want an analog to digital converter to work full scale, i.e utilize the full resolution, but since the Powerlink is an attenuated signal ( You will most likely never run the speakers at max volume ) it won't ! Which of course means the DSP will have less accurate data to work with...
The Beolab 5 despite being a slightly old design by now, really does deserve to be run all digital, the way it was meant to!
Actually, you should consider yourself lucky, using the BM5!
None of the present B&O offerings will fully support the Beolab 5 in the digital mode.

Thanks again, so I will have to get a digital cable and link it from the one lab to the other. Have you also a suggestion for the cable, a brand or...
