I just read that Spotify is now very much struggling to compete with Apple Music and might not be able to remain viable in the market. It's a shame to think of losing this great feature of the BeoSound 5. It's true that the BeoSound 5 has hit its end of life. Still, it's a shame to think of losing so much functionality. The BeoSound 5 seemed to have anticipated offering other streaming services. This could be done with a software upgrade and licensing. How many of us would be willing to pay a premium to have additional services such as Apple Music or Deezer so that we could continue enjoying our BeoSound 5 if Spotify shuts down? I, for one, would be wiling to pay more to keep the BeoSound 5 functional. I'm just not happy with the current offerings such as the Moment or Essence.
P.S. I truly am trying to think about amortizing the cost of the BeoSound 5 over the 6 or 7 years that I've owned it. I guess that makes it about a $1,000 USD for each year that I've enjoyed it? Perhaps it's been worth that and time to upgrade to a new BeoSound. Still, I'd like something better than the Moment or the Essence for an upgrade.
Just out of curiosity, how much would you be willing to pay to have the software upgraded for additional streaming options?
I have the Essence and it would be nice to more options. I might consider trying Apple Music if it was integrated into the Essence, but I probably wouldn't want to pay very much for a system upgrade. Possibly since I don't know what the value of Apple Music is for me.
A) Spotify is fairly large, just because it is loosing money doesn't mean it will shut down. The service they offer is very different from what apple offers at this point - I have used and tried both and even could see myself paying for both
For Beosound 5, you still have the baility to play your own non drm files, that you won't loose.

Not exactly on topic, but speaking of streaming services...
Being fairly new to B&O (bought my first products other than headphones, Moment/lab18/19, about one and a half year ago), I'm still a little puzzled by what seems to me like a lack of coherent strategy concerning the support of streaming services on the part of B&O. I might be wrong but I'm under the impression that different B&O music systems support different streaming services. Is it correct that the Beosound 5 supports Spotify, but not Deezer? Well, the Moment supports Deezer but not Spotify. So I guess as you upgrade your equipment you risk having to change streaming service as well. There are probably reasons this is the way it is, but ideally your music system of choice and your music service of choice should be two independent decisions, meaning that all Beosounds should support all the major services.
I have been using iTunes since its infancy and still maintain my old library of ripped CDs through iTunes Match. I never liked the thought of subscribing to a streaming service instead of "owning my music", but being somewhat of an Apple fanboy I also had to try a family plan on Apple Music when it was launched, and I still maintain that subscription. Buying a Moment made me subscribe to Deezer, a service I had never heard of (I don't know, but I think Deezer has a really marginal marked share here in Norway. None of my friends have heard of it before when I show them. "Streaming" in norwegian has almost become synonymous with "spotify"). I am overall satisfied with Deezer, but in some ways it seems halfway done. For instance, it has a hard time separating artists with the same name. The artist page for the swedish band Kent, as an example, is all mixed up with other equally-named artist, both french and japanese it seems. This is actually an annoyance as you get the wrong artist picture on the Moment, among other things. This concerns other artist as well. I have been in contact with Deezer support about this several times, but they have thus far failed to fix it and I am tired of nagging on them. Apple Music has this sorted out.
Bottom line, although I'm overall satisfied with Deezer I would drop it the instant Apple music became available, either as a software update on the Moment or in a new WiSA-enabled Beosound, like a Moment mk2. And overall, it would be great if every B&O product from now on was launched with support for all major streaming services, so you didn't have to change service when you change product.
Have a nice day, all!

A similar potential problem seems to be coming up with the Olive One. I have been really satisfied with the Olive driving my Beomaster 2000, or more recently driving my S45s directly. Unfortunately the software upgrades for the Olive One stopped around May of this year without the promised Spotify service. There are many owner concerns about what will happen in the long term, and one group is looking at RUNE, but there are problems with stripping out one proprietary operating system to replace it with another. My guess is that the same will apply with the B&O systems.
The dilemma here: spending hundreds or thousands on hardware that can become redundant overnight due to either software problems or a service provider going out of business. Those CD's still have a lot going for them (for as long as players are still made.)

The Deezer support is there simply because Deezer is the only service, that allows for sharing the stream over the network/multiroom (which is one of the core functions of the Moment/the Essence etc..
Spotify was added to the BS5 after many requests a while ago - in an analog 'multiroom'/ML network you can distribute, whatever you like - Spotify was the major and the most wanted service at that time.
If B&O could (???) negotiate the same rights for Spotify/AppleMusic/Tidal, I am sure they would offer these services (or one of them) in addition to Deezer for the NL devices. But that is a tough game these days.
I have no ides how high the costs would be - I am not sure that the user fees (as suggested) would cover this.
At least the Essence was lately opened to Google Cast - allowing for Android users to stream any service.
Something that before only was possible for Apple users via AirPlay.
Many people want to rely on their 'own' music - a safe haven for sure, but rather limited (depending on your collection of course).
Personally I am much more into the possibilities, that a streaming service can bring me - even if I don't know whether I'll have to change the service some time in the future.
In any case - music streaming is here to stay regardless of which provider we will see in the future.

There is a tv - and there is a BV
I would pay a reasonable amount for a software update to my BeoSound 5 if it includes AirPlay and/or CHROMECAST or support , in addition to DLNA already available. I am a long time Spotify Premium customer and confident that Spotify will continue its operations over the foreseeable future , but I would still see more streaming services as a good reason to pay for an upgrade . What worries me most is uncertainty about how long the current Spotify client will work.

Graham, so sorry to hear about the unfinished job doen with the Olive One. It is still is a very promising device. I would have buyed one if import taxes were lower.
I don't really know if CD's are as promising as you advert, I think it would more advised to have the music files on a HDD, would be safer in future. What happens if no brand anymore produces a CD player. Same happened with VHS and tape. For your musicfiles there will always be a medium to transfer them.
On a long term is it also not advisable to fully trust in streaming services, sooner or later they die. And if your players manufacturer not update the software anymore, you can install this item next to the VHS machine, or cassette recorder on the attic.

Hi all,
I really like the BS5. A device with an unique user experience and design. Something from the golden days of B&O...Never used the integrated Spotify much but installed shairport and the normal Spotify desktop client for using the "connect" feature.
As an engineer for embedded systems I'm asking myself what the standard B&O customer would pay for such a software upgrade. If there is enough demand and we get a couple of SW developers on board owning a BS5, why not build something from scratch based on Linux?
BS5 is just a standard x86 machine with a USB->Serial converter (ML), a DVI monitor and a USB HID attached...

Thanks Chris. I haven't given up on Olive just yet... it still works! For those not aware Olive seems to have been run by two german gentlemen in San Francisco, and looking at various Google searches you can work out that they relied on a lot of internships with german students visiting the US. Manufacturing was in Taiwan. There has been a bust-up at the top with Robert Altmann leaving and Dr Oliver (the Olive bit!) Bergmann taking full control again.
I agree that hard disk storage is the way to go for CDs. With internet radio I suspect B&O and Olive may have a similar approach; stations are added from a central library rather than the device searching the internet, so again, with no central library updates the whole system becomes vulnerable.
Hi,
Forget all this, i play the songs via youtube.
smelesct song on youtube, send it to app bubbleupnp on android phone, and then select beomaster 5 as player. Done plays your song. No adds, nothing to pay.
When Apple Music was doing their free trial period I tried it, maybe it's better now that they've had more time to work on it but it didn't at the time offer anything Spotify didn't, and I was used to Spotify. I have some playlists, and some radio stations that have over time gotten more tailored as I've used the thumbs up and down buttons, I really like what they turned into after a few hours of saying up or down. Mainly classic jazz from a lot of artists I didn't know about or from albums I don't have.
So, I hope they stay around. I'm used to using Spotify Premium, it's worth the monthly fee to me. I certainly didn't find I needed both Apple Music and Spotify, would probably feel the same if I tried Deezer, and since I don't need to be able to multi-room using digital (I still am stuck in the past with MasterLink) I don't find the distribution restriction on Spotify to be a limitation.
Plus, and this I know is a personal quirk, I really would rather not give Apple any more of my money. I'm a reluctant participant in the Apple ecosystem, I have an iPhone, iPad, and use iTunes for my ripped music, mainly stayed with it due to AirPlay to the PlayMaker, and a couple of other apps I am fond of. The devices work pretty well, though there are limitations to the iOS and such, they don't do everything I want but do enough to stay with them. Still and all, I'd like to continue to see things like Spotify and Deezer offer alternatives compared with an Apple semi-monopoly. That's just me obviously, but it's how my thought processes work on this.

I'm afraid I'm recovering from the BeoVirus.

I will pay for Apple music because I can play music with Siri. This is convenient, and Spotify, Google Play Music and Tidal don't seem to be able to do this. But I usually use the converter to remove DRM protection after purchasing Apple music, and then get free Apple music.
So that's the reason Apple Music is not available natively! Thanks for the explanation. I couldn't understand why they didn't offer the option. I have just purchased a Beosound 1 and love the product, but coming from Sonos it's getting a bit odd to have to Airplay my music.
If I'm not in a hurry what I do is set the AppleTV connected to my BV10 to stream Apple Music to the BeoSound 1, but this is a 'lot of work' for just listing to music. Any ideas on how to optimize this? ;)
I have used MusConv tool to transfer all my Spotify playlists to Apple Music without any hassle. It has free and you can try it.
I've been using it and i think it has been the easier way to transfer playlist from one to another.
In my case I AirPlay from my iPhone, iPad and HomePod to my B&O speakers. I guess if you don’t live in the Apple ecosystem it isn’t ideal. I have BS Core, A9 and Stage all working with Siri Voice command and AirPlay 2 - the receiver of the command is however an iDevice.
B&O in my life 😊:
