I wondered if anyone out there can help me with an unusual fault on a BEOSOUND 9000 [MK-3] to save it from the skip?

When powered up the Standby light comes on, lid button opens & closes the lid as usual however, the unit will not come out of standby. Every 4 minutes or so the unit seems to re-set, ie, the Standby light goes out & CD mech. makes motor noises, then Standby light comes back on again!

If I use the BEO4 remote control, the unit can be put into ‘Option #1’ & then put into service mode – again after about 4 minutes the unit re-sets & leaves the service mode & also reverts back to ‘Option #0’.

I have that 4 minutes to run each test mode (which is a pain) – upon running the test modes everything seems to be okay & all tests pass with the exception of the following:-

TM27 ~ 1-IOP-19 (TP MODULE HW ERROR APOS),

TM31 ~ TM ERROR.

I have checked much of the circuitry & everything looks good so I am thinking it is a fault with the *** or ***.

B&O are being arsey and seem to refuse to supply parts & just want me to send the unit in to them, which I don’t want to do as the charges will be more than the unit is worth. After all, who uses CD’s any more? It just remains a fancy looking radio & pre-amp to plug a music playing device into….

Any ideas on the fault & where I can obtain ****** would be appreciated.

Cheers,

                        Mark

Mark,

Whilst B&O only supply spares via their repair centres and dealers, the bigger problem is that they no longer have many spares for a lot of their previous generations of products such as the Beosound 9000.

Getting such spares will often mean purchasing a second hand unit not in working order and using it for parts.

I think this highlights the problem with not being able to get parts for older Beogear. Particularly for things like the BS9000, which I also own only it's a Mk I which puts me even farther up the creek without a paddle so to speak. It's that these aren't just normal pieces of hifi gear, just yet another boring box. Face it, if my Oppo dies and can't be repaired, I will replace it's boring black box with another boring black box, and not feel much loss. But B&O, especially things like the BS9000, the Beocenter 9xxx series, etc. are stunning, radical works of art masquerading as hifi gear. Iconic pieces which wind up in museums and books about design all over the world. Taking such a thing out of daily use in your home is terribly hard, it becomes a part of your decor as well as your entertainment, sending it to the trash dump is even more unthinkable!

Which is why so many here lavish such loving care and effort to restore older B&O gear I think, we can't stand the thought of such things perishing, but it's harder and harder to restore some things, especially the modern ones that require ICs and such. When my BS9000 eventually dies, even though in reality it's "just a thing" I'm going to be heartbroken, I've owned it and had it on proud display since 1997.

Jeff

I'm afraid I'm recovering from the BeoVirus. Sad

Lots of people use CD's.
Lots of people use cassette tapes.
Lots of people listen to AM radio.
It's just a matter of what you prefer, who you are and where you are.

Mark try Ray at Quality Dream Audio on 01323811804.  I found him great to deal with as he repaired my 5500 amp/tuner and knew exactly the problem when I telephone him.  Hope that this helpful to youBig Smile

Greetings Keith,

I agree this may be an issue on these older models, it's just that when the unit is deemed obsolete, it's a shame that B&O don't release the firmware file to allow us to repair suspect corrupted firmware issues, which is what I think is wrong with this one.

Also there are probably issues around the security password on the 9000 which I believe the main CPU firmware is married up with the tuner & controller firmware - I doub't a doner machine will help unless all the above is replaced.

It's probably worth repairing though as the mech. & OPU seem fine as it plays okay in test mode....

Hi Ben,

That was just a figure of speech, it'll end up on E-Bay if I can't get the parts.

The fancy 'upside-down-cone' shaped speakers that are with it still work okay...

Hi Jeff,

I agree with you that B&O do make a piece of art that would look good in any modern, designer room but are not up there (normally) with propper HiFi equipment in my opinion.

I have had quite a bit of B&O gear in my time & still find my Beocom 1200 answering machine the best I've had - unfortunately none of the 'HiFi' gear ever sounded good enough to keep & sound quality over asthetics is more important to me.

However the B&O will be a good enough sound to satisfy the non-critical, general listener & is certainly impressive in design - albeit quirky!

This one belongs to my local pup landlord, so would like to keep him sweet by repairing it as it just appears to have a CPU issue.

You could probably buy a decent MK3 if you keep your eye out - just in case yours fails.

Hi Martin / Dillen,

Yep, I suppose your right - I used open reel tape & DAT until recently.

I finally gave in & put the lot (including CD's, cassette etc.) onto a server with a decent converter, still love my vinyl though:-)
