Hello olvisab,
The simplest solution is if you don't need to have control of the Essence (ie. to change tracks) from the Beolab 3500. In this case, for a mk.2 Beolab 3500 (serial number higher than 19343452) you just need this cable from the Essence to the Powerlink socket of the 3500:-
http://soundsheavenly.com/bang-olufsen/31-rj45-to-powerlink-compatible-all-in-one-cable-convert-new-2013-ethernet-powerlink-to-traditional-8-pin-din-powerlink.html
For mk.1 Beolab 3500, a specially wired cable is needed, which I can build on request.
A B&O remote (either Beo4 or Beolink 1000) is needed to set the speaker to Powerlink mode each time it is switched on (by pressing MENU MENU 0 4 GO on a Beo4 or MENU MENU 0 4 PLAY on a Beolink 1000) and volume control is then managed from the Essence. To turn off the speaker, press the “Power Off” button on the remote as usual.
This is the simplest (and cheapest) solution. However, you may find that adding the Beolink Converter as you suggested will give you better functionality, as this potentially allows the Essence to feed multiple rooms if required.
Kind regards, Steve.
Steve.

If you want to be able to control things from the BL3500, you need a NL/ML Converter and a "Power Box" since you need something to provide power on the Masterlink.
You can then map e.g Deezer source to "CD" and TuneIn to "RADIO" on the ML side, and activate the sources using a remote where you have the Beolab 3500.

@Hiort
The Essence Mk1 isn't a NL device - it wouldn't be recognized by the converter.
Connecting it to a 1611 should be the right way to go to get it into the ML-chain (with the 1611 as a ML-driver).
If I remember correctly, it must be activated with the Aux-command - that is, if the BL3500 supports that command ;-(

There is a tv - and there is a BV

Oooppss... My bad.
Thanks everybody
How can I connect the converter 1611 to the essence ? Aux link or powerlink or both ?
i will be able to control the beolab 3500 with a beo4 and set the level of sound ?
steeve, your proposal would be good for my use only, but my wife needs mostly to use it and I can ask her seriously to do daily this.
Hi olvisab,
No problem! Please connect the Essence to the Aux socket of the converter. There are two options:-
1) This standard cable will make the converter activate when any Video button is pressed (eg. TV, DTV, V.AUX):-
http://soundsheavenly.com/playmaker-and-essence-wireless-streaming/84-rj45-to-aux-input-cable-airplay-on-your-bo-system.html
2) I can provide a custom-wired cable on request to make the converter activate when any Audio button is pressed (eg. CD, RADIO, A.AUX).
Either way, this won't activate the Essence directly, you will need to control the Essence via the app or the Essence remote in the usual way. The Beo4/Beolink 1000 remote will give you control of the 3500.
The 3500 will then connect to the converter with a Masterlink cable:-

Hi Steve
This brings up the question, if the Essence wheel (never versions) could be made to trigger the audio command as well with one of the ir-settings there.
This would be a very handsome solution.
On the forum there have been some posts indicating, that this is possible.
But still I saw no clear description.
Even if I don't need the 'wheely' in my 'Essence-setup', maybe I should buy one just to test it ;-)
Question is - which volume would the 'wheely' then control? That of the Essence or that of the BL3500???
Hi MM,
The Essence wheel remote can be set into IR mode instead of bluetooth, also the Essence can have an extra "silver disc" IR receiver added to work with this. This should mean that the wheel remote could potentially control both the Beolab 3500 and the Essence (although the level of control would be very limited).
Probably the best option is to keep the Essence wheel remote for the Essence in bluetooth mode (or use the app to control the Essence via a smart phone) and use a Beo4 for the Beolab 3500.
Hi Steve. I am half confused and half frustrated..
I am trying to connect my Beosound3500 with the Essense via the powerlink cable you described. The ONLY way I can get the sound out is by pressing MENU MENU 0 4 GO (in off mode).
Then the display shows MCL SEL. and I can hear the music playing on the Essense and I can control the volume from the app or the Essense remote.
There is A LOT of noise and the beosound3500 turns off if I hit any key on the Beo4.
How can I avoid the noise and turn on/off the loudspeaker from the Essense remote? And use my beo4 without needing to press the long menu menu 04 code?
looking forward for your response.
thank you in advance.
greetings Mike
Hi Mike,
Further up this thread there are details of the two options for connecting the Beolab 3500 speaker to the Essence. You are using the simplest option (ie. the direct cable with the speaker in MCL SELECT mode which doesn't allow for volume control of the 3500 on the B&O remote). Adding the Beolink Converter will give you volume control of the speaker from the B&O remote.
However, you shouldn't get any background noise, so this sounds as though you have got the wrong cable. If your speaker shows MCL SELECT in the display then it is the mk.1 version, which needs a specially wired cable. If you bought the cable from me, please contact me via my website so that I can check your order.
If you bought the cable elsewhere, it is unlikely to be suitable for your speaker (I'm not aware of anyone else producing this cable!), so please contact me to get the correct cable for your speaker.
Hi Steve.
I now tried to order the cable but just realise that I need the cable for the mk.1 edition.
is it possible to get that? 3 meter cable. If possible in white it will be great.
thank you in advance:)
Thanks for getting in touch. Please can you contact me via the website regarding your order, as I need to be able to match your request to the order so that I can check this (it also prevents you having to share any personal details on this open forum).
