Hi my A1 goes to standby after a shortwhile of having nothing played on it - is there anyway of changing this - I was thinking of using it in the car for the sat nav on my phone and also taking calls - but it wouldn't be very good if it keeps switching off!

Not sure, the manual does not cover that. But I would believe it would either turn off or just always stay on. I'm buying one later today so I can try it out some time.

A cable doesn't change its behavior. Cable or not, it switches off after a period of inactivity.
