Hello y'all. Well, it's all in the title: my beocord 6500 (the lovely white one) can play a tape but refuses to fast forward or rewind it. I've checked the belt (this model has only one) that seems to be OK and i've tried the ff/rewind keys without any tape and it works. But when I put a tape back on, the capestan wheels won't spin and the beocord stops. Any idea?

Will it wind/rewind for a second or so?
Does it try?

Hello Martin. Yes it does try, both ff and rewind. The rubber wheel moves the tape into the cassette but the two cabestans don't move so the beocord stops before the tape gets unwinded into the tape or round the rubber wheel (some security I suppose). Did some electrical checks and found that the wind/rewind motor only gets 5,3V in action. Should it receive +/- 13V like the capestan motor? I think it's an electrical problem because I took apart everything that spins piece by piece, cleaned it and lubricate it so that mechanical problem should be avoided.

I have tried to verify the motor of ff/rewind with a seperate power block under 5V and it spins as it should, so there is no motor or power problem it seems. Could it be a simple matter of rubber belt, even if the play function works?

It wouldn't be a first.
I can supply correct belts.

A little precision here: when i try ff/rwd without any tape by pressing the 5 little plastic bars at the top of the cassette place, the FF/RWD get moving but stops after 5 seconds. Is it normal?

Yes, because no tape motion is detected.

I've cleaned up and lubricate the gears under the two capstan wheels and shortened the belt (aprox . 4cm) and YESSSS: it does frwd/rwd (I've heard a little click just before it goes). Once again, thanks Martin for your information and quick reply. Tell me how to order you a new belt.

4cm... that's A LOT! It will be way too tight now - don't run it like this, the motor bearings won't last long.

I've just taken ownership of a Beocord 6500 and I'm having the same problem you describe.  Tapes play fine, but everything seems to lock up when trying to fast forward or  rewind.  Also, if I try to record -- the displays says "auto recording pause" and then goes dark and no recording takes place.

@Dillen -- I may need belts as well since I'm having the exact same problem.
