Hi - I want to change my Avant at some point soon for a Beovision 7, the Avant will be used as a link TV in my bedroom when I do and replace a BV1. At the moment I have the two and a BV4002 all linked to the Avant, my question is that if I change to a BV7 will I still be able to watch DVDs and Apple TV if they are connected to the BV7 via HDMI in the link rooms - I seem to remember reading somewhere that this didn't work, if it doesn't work, am I better off going for a new B&O Play TV?, or if my budget is limited would a BV5 fit the bill as an interim solution?

Video link is only analogue and will not be compatible with digital HDMI-based platforms, which all new TVs will be.

I have a similar setup, with a BeoSystem 3 in the living room, an Avant in the bedroom, and a BeoVision 4 with BeoSystem 1 in the den. They are all connecting via MasterLink for music, but there is no video link. With blu-ray players and Apple TVs each below $100 these days, it's just simpler to add a blu-ray player and Apple TV to each link room TV.

I'm supposing that you currently have the first generation Apple TV. I would recommend keeping that first generation Apple TV with your Avant and buying one of the new Apple TVs for your BeoVision 7. The new Apple TV is only $99 and has more features, such as 1080p, Netflix, and Hulu, that the first generation Apple TV does not have. Whatever you do, don't get rid of your first generation Apple TV. It's compatible with the Avant; whereas, the new Apple TV is NOT, being HDMI-only.

Hi Beojeff

Thanks, that's what I thought - also hadn't thought of keeping the Apple TV1, but it's a great idea to have it as a standalone for music in the bedroom and getting the new Apple TV for the living room - is there any way that a new Apple TV can access the music from Apple TV1? not a big problem as I've just ordered an iPhone and intend to use that to stream to Apple TV or Airport Express

ajames:

My recollection that the ATV1 is synched from your iTunes library, i.e. the ATV1 is not the primary store.

Therefore all you need to do is add the new ATV, the ATV2 or whatever comes next, to your Home Share network, and you will be able to browse your iTunes library through the ATV2's interface.  If you have purchased access to iCloud and iMatch you will also be able to browse that and play that from your ATV2's interface.

Let me know if you want more details.

Actually, ajames, the BeoVision 7 setup MIGHT be capable of video link. My US BeoSytem 3 has analog inputs as well as digital inputs and IS capable of video link. However, my US Avant and BeoVision 4 are not capable of video link. Video link was not extended to the US market, except for later model BeoSystem 3. Since the BeoVision 7 is based on the BeoSystem 3, there might be video link capability for you. The problem is with the Apple TV, which has never had an s-video connection.

You're more likely to have success with video link with the BeoVision 7 than the BeoPlay 1. The BeoVision 7 has plenty of analog inputs. However, the BeoPlay 1 only has 1 analog input and 5 HDMI inputs.

At any rate, you'll find that the quality of high def video has really obsoleted video link, which does not support high def video. You'll enjoy a more better picture just having dedicated Blu-Ray and Apple TV sources connected in each room.

Be aware, if you are getting an early BV7 rather than a new one, I would not regard this as an upgrade! The first series of BV7s had a very disappointing picture. The BV5 is to a large extent an Avant with a 42" Panasonic screen so is not at the cutting edge - the HD ready one is probably the one to get or look for a BV9 which are becoming insanely cheap! Still the best TV B&O made in my opinion. (Apart from the ALT lens which looks silly! Smile )

Thanks everyone - that's really useful - would the BV5 then be a good bet if I want a better larger picture than the avant and still access video sources around the house? The reason being that I live on my own so it's really useful being able to have sound and picture in the different rooms, particularly the Kitchen during the day and bedroom when I watch the end of something at bed time.

Out of interest how much is a BV9 second hand these days? (roughly?)
