Would like some opinions on this. I plastidipped a Beolab 2, and couldn't help myself. Had to try with metal finish. This or original black?

The small residue around the cone will be removed when it is completely dry.

I very much prefer the matte original design that contrasts with the metallic surface around the elements. Fake metal is just skeuomorphism and doesn't look right to me. But perhaps it looks better in reality. I would imagine the moving element with a sparkling metallic film over it might be a distraction when light is reflected onto it during a movie night.

PS. I really want a Beolab 2 too :) Perhaps I should change my BL9s to BL2 + just my BL8000´s

Question, Leo.... What is "Plasti-Dip"? I've seen you'r previous pictures before, and having studied industrial design in school, I imagine it's simply "dipping" items in a liquid polymer?

Anyway, how did you do this with your BL2? Did you brush it on?

PlastiDip is a spray on material which comes in an aerosol can. You mask off the areas you don't want sprayed (like you'd do when you paint something), and just spray on the PlastiDip. Here's a link to one on Amazon. The beauty of PlastiDip, is that it should also peel off easily as well.

Thanks, Sal! It IS the same stuff I was thinking of. I was only aware of the kind you would dip tool-handles into... I didn't know they made a spray version of it! (Must try... but maybe not with my B&O just yet!!)

I already peeled it off. Going for the black like the original. But I did cover up the imperfections in the rubber, and there is plenty.

PlastiDip is awesome Big Smile

Hello all,

My first post. I have long visited and read the forum (and learned).

This week my BL90s arrived.  I was very surprised that despite the labels......customs let both crates through unopened. 😉

Cheers.

Thank you all for the kind welcome.

I have tried to take some pictures of the BL 90s. I can't do them justice. The black fabric is slightly translucent and has a sheen that I will have to try to convey. The 3 dimensional shape is also complex and gets lost. I will have a try with some off camera flash and my good camera (not my phone).

Watch this space.

Re Beolab 90: How do they sound?

I have been quite content to listen to my BL8000s with or without my BL2 depending on the music and my mood.......Until in March I was invited to a B&O "event".  We were introduced to the BL 90.  The speakers were in our town for a week.  We went back twice more and listened to our music as well as the demonstration tracks.

What makes these speakers stand out is more than the quality of the sound (which is very good, clear and realistic). The "staging" is the new experience for me.  The speakers produce the sound in a way that gives not only a direction to the voice or instrument, but also the distance.  As my wife said, it is like every track played is a concert or a studio performance. The sound staging gives an illusion that the sound does not come from the speakers at all.

Here is a picture of my speakers. I am sure you all will have seen lots of promotional pictures which look far better than my effort.  They are big and beautiful.  The main downside is that there are quite a few functions/features of these speakers yet to be implemented.  For me, I want the full implementation of the Automatic Room Compensation (APC).......it's coming.

@ Fred_Nerk

I guess you are the lucky one, very few wives will approve that kind of expenditure on a set of speakers Smile

Could you share how you connected the speakers, i.e. are you using Powerlink, Wisa or something else?

Did the dealership recommend a way of hooking it up?

What do you mean when you say that some functions are not implemented yet. Has the automatic room compensation really not been implemented yet? Surprise

Fred, welcome to beoworld, and congratulations on your stunning new speakers!

paolomariano:

The BL90 will never do 'automatic' room compensation in the BL5 sense, as the aim is to compensate at specific listening positions / zones rather than measuring how the room sounds next to the speaker. Ultimately this will involve (the installer) connecting the microphone to the speaker and performing compensation measurements in each of the listening positions, and the user will then be able to select between these depending on where they are sitting, but for now the calibration is performed in the main listening position only with the aid of a reference microphone, a laptop, and some additional hardware, with the resultant calibration profiles then being uploaded to the BL90s.

Having heard the BL90s prior to this calibration having been performed, hearing how good they sound and in particular how effective the narrow beam mode was at reducing reflected sounds (thus eliminating much of the 'room effect', as well as producing such a detailed sound stage - especially in terms of sounds appearing to emanate from far in front of or behind the virtual line drawn between the two speakers), I was sceptical that things would be improved much further by the calibration process.

Boy was I wrong! the calibration curves showed we had a peak variation of around 6 or 7dB from flat response centred at just above 100Hz, once the calibration was completed there was a noticeable improvement in how tight the bass response sounded.

I have neither the space nor the budget for a pair of BL90s, but I do feel lucky to be able to listen to them frequently when visiting the store. There is however one downside - they make every other speaker sound somewhat inferior in comparison!

Martin.

Thanks Martin.

You may recall a year or so ago I attend a Linn presentation where there was much secrecy about how they were/would accomplish their exact magic (puns intended).

Do you have a view now on just how superior the B&O approach is/will be?
