Hi

Christmas Greetings.

I have had a Beosound 5 for around 3 years. Generally I have been quite happy with it. Now however there are problems of age with no more software updates and incompatibility with my mac operating system.

I have now also have a complete mess of a music library. All discs ripped onto my beosound/master 5 are in WMA lossless, music on my iMac is in various formats; FLAC, AIFF and WAV. I still use my iMac for music particularly for party playlists, its just much easier.

I was hoping the moment might just simplify things for me. A number of questions, namely:

1. Will i notice a discernible difference in sound with lossless tracks via either the beosound 5 or moment?

2. It is my intention to have someone take my beomaster and i tunes library on my iMac and convert everything to one lossless codec if possible. If so, what codec would work on a moment and in iTunes and display tags and artwork properly and indeed play properly?

3. With the moment will I still be readily able to access my lossless tracks? I understand the moment will curate tracks from deezer and my own library? I don't want to be playing lower bitrate tracks though via deezer if i already have those tracks. I want to be able to listen to tracks at as high a bit rate as possible on my 9's.

4. I'm not fixed on iTunes, it just works well with our other apple products. Is there another product that might work better with the moment, i.e. would it be better to buy a windows laptop or server to put everything on? I really want to try and have this system for at least some years and not end up so soon with the compatibility mess I have now.

Any advice appreciated which might save me making another expensive and time consuming mistake. I'm hoping once I get the library sorted I can just maintain it and ensure I purchase tracks in the same codec from that point on. (AIFF and WAV seem to be the most readily available in the music I buy... though WAV is a pain to try and add in photo art etc)

Regards

David

Hi David,

Christmas greetings to you also.

Have you closely followed the thread: 'The Moment software version Release Notes'.

If not then you have to read it and conclude for yourself if you want to step in now or wait until new software finally provide the long awaiting solutions.

Do you really want us to advice you on buying a Moment? As a quote says 'Every flower must grow through dirt' is this the case with the Moment. We are still waiting for a complete opening of this flower.

Now the answer to a few questions you asked:

1) No, the sound is very good especially if you listen to DLNA content in 96khz 24 bit format.

2) Although the Moment accepted various formats as mp3, wma (no lossless), aac,... I prefer flac in 96khz 24 bit format. But this is not usable on iTunes.

3) Only if you are having the following formats, see product sheet from the Moment. Here.

4) For listening to your library, you can use (almost) any Windows, Mac or NAS system, and running Twonky Server on this system to provide the Moment with your DLNA content. When buying a Moment you get a free licence key from B&O.

I use Yate Audio Tagger to sort the correct artwork and info to my library, but I'm sure other members are using software of all kinds. Its just up to you what feels best to use.

Hi David

To tidy up your music collection I would highly recommend a piece of software available from www.dbpoweramp.com.

Once the software has scanned your library you set a file destination folder, click one button you can file convert all of your library to FLAC. There is also a piece of software within the package that's called Perfect Match and this scans, de-dupes and adds artwork to the highest resolution automatically for you. If you need to rip CDs going forward there is another piece of software in the package to rip discs into FLAC.

As per the previous post run Twonky as the link between your computer and Moment. You can map the FLAC folder and iTunes.

AIFF files aren't supported however AAC 256kbps (iTunes plus) are if you wish to use iTunes.

This all works today and well! Software is a constant evolution process and yes there are updates on the horizon, you'll need to make a decision some time or another Wink.

Regards

Stuart
