Hello BWders
It's not often that I can post here about my expansive B&O collection, but it is with great joy that I can post that I have purchased a BS5 Encore.
I know that some of you don't like the product, however, I have always liked it and glad that I have purchased one.
Yesterday, Saturday, i was down at my Dad's house helping him re arrange furniture and his TV (set up foxtel, etc) and he said "oh i'm going to get a B&O stereo and set it up with those speakers you gave me". He is referring to the BL4000s that I purchased through another Melbourne BW member :-)
Hmmm, I go. What one are you thinking of? "Oh the one with the sliding doors". Anyway the conversation prevailed that If I was going to get one, I would get the BeoSound 5 Encore and hook it up to my NAS. And since Dad also has all his music now digitally stored, he should also look at it.
On the way home, the better half goes, "aren't you going to B&O to get a stereo". Hmmm i go. Of course, with out delay (and without better halfs buyers remorse).
So we arrive at B&O Richmond and announce "i think (lol) i'm here to purchase a BeoSound 5 Encore". And then think oh crap, I hope they don't have to place an order. After fluffing around playing with the one in store after i have already the go ahead, I'm walking out with a White BS5E in 3 separate boxes.
Box 1: Table Stand; Box 2: The Unit; Box 3: The Power Supply.
At home carefully reading all the materials and carefully opening the boxes checking everything to ensure it's all perfect, I came to the conclusion that B&O has areas for improvement in packaging and also a user guide on how to put it all together.
Areas of improvement :
But those criticisms aside, and with 2 calls back to the dealer (there was no supplied pin code) and why won't it connect to my NAS (because net music mode wasn't enabled) - yet no where did it mention that it needs to be done, I'm finally up and running.
I love the radio function and have been listening to ambient music along with radio from Holland and a few other places, it's made me think of music in a whole different way. I like interacting with the BS5, touching it, working it out. I don't want a remote control, I want to get up and use it.
Now that it has connected to my NAS (The WD MyBook Live i've mentioned previously), it's busily working away downloading the covers and updating itself. Basically it has taken a whole day to do this.
I have connected it via Power Over Ethernet.
When I was in the store, I said i'm going to connect it to my BL4's (remembering I had powerlink cables). I got home and turned the BL4's upside down to reveal that they are PC versions and that I gave the BS4000s to my dad to connect to the iMac I gave him, so I was left with the PL cables. Lucky for me there is a headphone jack! So currently I'm set to 3.5 mm mode and waiting till they have the BS3 and playmaker combo that another user posted about.
I will try and post some photos, but I always stuff it up. I know I can load them on to a web page somewhere an put a link, but I just want to add them to the post.
So a very happy BS5 Encore, even if it took me 2 calls to get it all working. I'm glad I finally made the jump, I love it!

Thanks mate, will try and post when i can remember how. Would love it if you can drag and drop photos in to when you compose a post / reply on here.
Cheers

At home carefully reading all the materials and carefully opening the boxes checking everything to ensure it's all perfect, I came to the conclusion that B&O has areas for improvement in packaging and also a user guide on how to put it all together. Areas of improvement : The Power Supply box includes the power supply which you have to put together yourself - you shouldn't have to do this. Included in the box is the PS unit and the 5m cable from the PS unit to the BS unit. It doesn't include the Power cable from the PS unit to the wall - that's in Box 2 (weird). Considering there is no weight to the PS unit, i don't even think its required. There should be an over arching manual that explains the unit comes together in 3 separate boxes and the order in which you should tackle it all, and what to expect when you turn it on. Even how to turn it on and off - there's no where I read how to do this; along with how long you should expect for the unit to be up and functioning; and how to enable the net music mode to connect to your NAS. None of the information explains this. That the cost of the PS unit should not be itemised on the bill. I was charged for $150 for a power supply? That's the first I have ever heard of being charged for a Power Supply. If they are doing it for inventory purposes, they should add the $150 to the BS unit price and zero it out. I felt jibbed (it's always the little things) and called them to complain But those criticisms aside, and with 2 calls back to the dealer (there was no supplied pin code) and why won't it connect to my NAS (because net music mode wasn't enabled) - yet no where did it mention that it needs to be done, I'm finally up and running. Hello Michael
To echo the words of others - congratulations - I too have always liked the BS5 Encore, and hope to find a place for one in my future life with B&O as my AV system.
Thanks also for an in-depth review - my V1 also came from/via Richmond.
Good to see another Ozzie here - and from Melbourne too!
Kind Regards
John...
I'll add another huge CONGRATULATIONS from another aussie-melburnian Beoworlder!!!
I'm glad the 4000s are still going strong

Congratulations from me also. Very pleased for you. There's nothing quite like the moment when that dream finally materialises in your lounge room.
Enjoy, and do let us know how you get on once you've lived with it for a few weeks.
regards,
Matt
Thanks everyone for your kind words.
I just came home from work and I was surprised that its finished its MOTS calculation. I'm expecting a call from the store tomorrow to see how I went.
Now just a few things to nut out:
> Why does it take a while to start up
> White or Black BL3's? I think white
> Why aren't all the album covers available? Think perhaps it's still doin it's thing.
I think it's time for a nice dry martini. woooooooooooooooooooohooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
Lets see if this works
Hi Michael,
Congratulations on your purchase - the white Encore looks great in your home.
We got our BS 5 in February and are still enjoying it.
The internet radio is awesome and we listen to it a lot especially as our local radio choice is somewhat limited in country Victoria. A question though - do you find the internet radio is missing some stations - I can't seem to find FOX, 774 Melbourne or the likes of Nova? It was a while ago when I was looking for them so they might be there now.
Enjoy
Peter
Many congratulations - a lovely product. Shame about the add-on costly supplement for the PS.
I realise this has been probably thrashed to death but as the owner of B&O products and Apple also, what in summary are the advantages of the BS5 as against an iPad 3? The BS5 really attracts me, but the cable turns me off it in a way.

Thanks for the update Michael.
We're away from home at the moment but will check when we get back.
I've noticed the streaming quality of a few of the Melbourne/Australian stations is not overly wonderful compared to other stations out there. We listen to Gold of a morning and to be honest the sound quality is fairly poor. I think they stream at the lower end of the scale
On the other hand there are other stations where the sound quality is excellent. We currently listening to NZ radio at the moment and the audio quality is a lot better.
I have not been a fan of the 5, but having connected my Iphone to the Beolit by USB cable, and then compared the quality compared to Ipad/Iphone using Airplay only, the cable method is still by far the best.
Looks great
Beosound Stage, Beovision 8-40, Beolit 20, Beosound Explore.
It looks really fabulous in white! Congrats!!!
Too long to list....
More congratulations - great set of pictures ! many thanks !!
Are you crazy Michael? How you can get this kind of crap? Why you did not buy one of the "Idings" much cheaper bla, bla, bla..... Hey mate, don't worry, I'm not that uncivilized to be serious with these words :)
You've got a great system. I'm also very satisfied with BS5 Encore especially with the radio. Easy to use, looking and sounding great and functioning great.
Have a great time with your system. Again congratulations.

Yes the power supply really should be already assembled by B&O, i'm sure the Australian stores have plenty of spare time to do this for customers, I also received no PIN but you were lucky you didn't have to wait all weekend to get yours!
I hope you enjoy yours more than I do mine :)
Great to see plenty of Aussies here...we need our own section!!

I agree!!
Just an update, I went to the Richmond store today to audition the BeoLab 3's and 12's - i love both of them!
Then there will also be the smaller BL12s coming out soon too.
It's Saturday evening, I have my dry martini and enjoying Radio Abalone from France. That station is the ducks nuts. ;-)
Michael:I went to the Richmond store today to audition the BeoLab 3's and 12's
on the other hand I spent the day working at home writing a report --- with the A3 next to me playing AccuRadio channels, started with Jazz/Blues but started getting depressed (rain AND work on a Saturday) so then I flipped over to rock love songs ...
Michael,
How you'd go attaching the BS5 to the table stand?
When I did mine it took about half an hour and i was ready to throw it out the window by then. I must admit I had the CD drive to mount as well but I didn't think it would take that long. I commented on this to the store and they said it initially took their tech a while to do the same. I suppose once you've done it once it makes sense.
Hello
Bet you're enjoying the purchase!!!!
Ive been thinking about a Beosound 5 for sometime. Presently use a beocentre 2 and beoport for digital music. At some point soon the software will no longer work and it will be time to upgrade. Will never part with the beocentre 2 though!!!
One of the only things that puts me off the beosound 5 is the fact that I cant scroll through playlists i have created eg. Davids Birthday Party 2010, 2011, Mardi Gras 2011, Garden Party etc. Ive spent a lot of time making these play lists and don't want to loose them!!! Ive cross faded them and had a good go at mixing similar beats per minute....
So..when will I be able to have this functionality with a beosound........???? Once this is actually sorted I'll buy a beosound 5
David

Hi Pete,
To be honest the manual wasn't intuitive at all. It probably took me about 20-30 minutes to put it together, it wasn't until I found the little button to press in - i was trying and trying thinking bloody hell it's not working / seating properly. That was really annoying me. I'm not looking forward to taking it off if i need to so i made sure i ran every cable through the stand. ethernet, usb extendo, power link and the power :-)
But still, they really need to rethink their instructions, especially with consumer cash and carry products like this. I know I can pay for a tech, but I like doing things myself.

Hi David,
I can see why you wouldn't part with your BC2 - it's marvellous!
Do you mean playlists that you have created in your BC? Or? I know you can create lists in BS5E like garden music, clean / rock the house. If it's similar beat per music, then MOTS will do that.
I love it!
I've spent a good amount yesterday putting a cable sock over my cables ;-)
David,
maybe you can transfer your playlists on the BS5 in a easy way.
Just create the folders named "Mardi gras 2011" or "Garden Pary" in the BM5 directory on your computer and drag and drop the songs in the correct folders.
Scan the BM5 with Beoplayer and i think you can now see your Playlists on the BeoSound 5.
I believe the Playlists are recognized like an album.
Thanks for the reply Steph and Michael..
So Steph are you suggesting that if i have created a dozen or more different playlists i can actually easily recall them and play them as i originally created them? That is very exciting... Bang and Olufsen have told me no...and were almost incredulous that id want to make a playlist!!! If I can actually do this, then i may well just get myself one.
One final question... beoport and beocentre 2 haven't always played nicely with MAC. Will I have similar issues with Beosound 5?
Regards

Hi ed
With your a3 and iPad how do you watch tv? Is your tv tuner connected to the iPad? What eyetv do you have and how's it connected ?
Hey Michael,
I have tested that scenario (eyetv), but my MacMini does not have enough memory (2Gb only) to sustain all the activity (at least that's my analysis) and the result was quite a delay and some stalling.
So I have decided to wait and see what the next click in the MacMini cycle is before I decide to do a memory upgrade.
So in short, it does work, but it does require a powerful server.
And for our usage we do not need it -- we watched recordings rather than live TV.
« So Steph are you suggesting that if i have created a dozen or more different playlists i can actually easily recall them and play them as i originally created them ? »
David, yes, i think it could be the solution.
But i think the playlists (the albums), and the titles of the songs in the playlist must be well tagged.
For instance, all the songs in the playlist called "Garden Party" must have the same ID - album name - called "Garden Party"
So, when you search an album in the BeoSound 5, you can find your playlist called "Garden party" and you are sure that all the songs are in the playlist.
You might as well use the clunky coloured favourites lists on the system, seriously if you have a large collection of playlists and music in general i wouldn't recommend this system at all.
