DVD1 stopped reading disks

I have a DVD1, which started to randomly not play/read DVDs some time ago. Since a week  it doesn't read DVD any more. Is this a known problem and can it be fixed?

Do you have a Mark 1 or Mark 2 DVD1?

A Mark 1 DVD1 has a type number of 4620

A Mark 2 DVD1 has type numbers 4621-4627

It is a Mark 1 from 2002

Whilst the unit is not playing, is the disk spinning?

Given that it was intermittent before it stopped working altogether, I suggest your first step is to clean the laser lens.
