Dear All,

I am new to this forum and I have a couple of questions.

  1. Has anyone else had this problem?
  2. What do you think my best course of action is?

Context...

I have a very nice Beocom 2 from roughly 2002 making it a mk1.  When I brought it out recently, after some 6 years in storage, the plastic casing on the base had perished and had become all crumbly.  Has anyone else had this problem?  In my view it might be caused by the plasticiser leaching out of the plastic causing it to become brittle and crumbly; the surface has become a little sticky.  It is now impossible to use and I need a replacement.

I mentioned it to my local B&O store in Knightsbridge, but the gentleman assured me it was my fault (I must have spilled something on it to make it do that) as he had never seen this problem before in all his many years with B&O. I am disappointed by his response as I know this not to be the case.

Has anyone else had this problem?

Even after all this time I would not expect such a failure in the materials used by B&O; I have always been lead to believe that these were products engineered for life.  That has been my experience with their HiFi products.

Being a Mk1, the base unit is both a charger and base station; so a replacement is not easily found.

What do you think my best course of action is?

Thank you for your kind advice.

Regards,

Andrew Lewis

That is a well known problem.

Not your fault and not much to do.

I have a base with that issue.

There are another recent thread on the topic on the forum.

My base was sticky for a couple of years so I put it in the drawer, now the whole top casing has perished and fallen to bits, it's a lot smaller than it used to be, the dealer is full of it

I titled it mystery B and O object, due to it being almost unrecognisable, look at my avatar
