Finally I've got a box to output 4K material to my Avant - picture looks stunning 😃

But, I can't get DD 5.1 sound from the Nvidia, only PCM 2.0 regardless what setting I'm using.

So if anyone here has an Avant + Nvidia Shield AND working DD 5.1 sound from Netflix, I would like to know how you got it fixed, please?

Thanx

I've the same issue, but the Shield is giving 5.1 to the Avant, the Avant tho is playing a stuttering mess. I have to tell netflix to revert to pcm 2.0 to get good sound.

It does seem to be a netflix issue tho, as the shield can output Dolby just fine from other apps and sources (vlc, plex, youtube)

Try selecting the Surround Speaker Group on your remote a second time... Had the same problem with my BV14...

I got my nvidia shield tv two days ago and I have the same issue. Updated to the new android nougat that came out today too and it's still the same. A lot of people seem to have this issue with Netflix on the shield tv. Not only with B&O but Samsung, Yamaha etc. Nvidia seems to ignore questions about it and Netflix is impossible to reach except by phone - someone was recommended to switch from wifi to Ethernet... like why? Would probably not make any difference.

I think there is either a bug or hardware issue - but probably the first since the issue is still there in the new 2017 edition (just smaller and without IR and micro USB/micro sd card slot.

Also, on a side note I've been experimenting with resolutions. I have an Apple TV 4 and it's set to 1080P@60hz which is very smooth on the Avant.

It seems that the scaler in Avant (from 1080P to 4K) is much better than the Nvidia Shields own scaler is. I watch a lot of old shows (frasier mostly) in 576i/p that is scaled good on the Apple TV via the Avant upscaler to the panel resolution. On the Nvidia it looks much worse. If I set it to 1080p it goes better but I still believe the Apple TV looks slightly better.

Also noticed that I don't get he natural motion flow hat B&O uses in its video engine if I use 4K@60hz. It works on Apple TV at 1080P@60hz so I'm surprised it seems to be lacking on 4K@60hz. It does however work on 4K@30hz and it makes the motion very fluid and more lifelike. I very much prefer that. I wonder why it seems to be of at 60hz. The shield is not very good at pushing lower frequency video over a 60 frames signal. It stutters a bit and looks less lifelike, especially on panning video. Keeping it at 4K@30hz gives me more fluid video but also less fluid GUI since it's designed for 60fps and therefore loses some frames. I still haven't found a good solution here. I am not quite sure how it works on the 1080P source, if Apple is also doing some smart frame interpolation like B&O does from 23/23/30 to 60 or if the B&O video engine just doesn't work well with 4K@60hz mode. It looks very much more tiresome. I'll continue to investigate over the upcoming days.

But, the Netflix issue is annoying. Netflix uses Dolby digital plus. It works on Apple TV 3 and 4 for me so it should definitely work on the much more expensive and advanced Nvidia Shield TV too. Especially since it's marketed as the best streamer available..

I've used the Nvidia Shield for 1.5 years now, and I have to agree with the statements above regarding the quality difference between the 1080p to 4k: The Avant does the best job, then Apple followed by the Shield. I have experienced the sound issues with every single Shield sw version, and it has become second nature to restart the box to sort them out. Interesting to read the comment regarding 4k@30hz, I will have to try this one out. I have switched between 4k@60 hz and the B&O-to-their-dealers recommendation for in-store demos: "NOTE: For optimal Netflix 4K viewing experience, manually adjust the output resolution to “4K 23.976 Hz” here:

SETTINGS > HDMI > RESOLUTION"
Not sure there is a (big) improvement with the 23.976hz, but it is still the recommendation from Struer to their dealers to set the Shield to this output format.

Roger, would your statement be true of any box attached to the Avant where you want to play 4K?

SETTINGS > HDMI > RESOLUTION"
Not sure there is a (big) improvement with the 23.976hz, but it is still the recommendation from Struer to their dealers to set the Shield to this output format.

Michael,

I do not know, but I can't see why not. But this recommendation is put in a one-pager to the dealers regarding the Nvidia Shield and the Avant, so a bit strange that they didn't make a generic recommendation for 4k input format. Could you try out 23.975hz and give us your feedback on the result? I'm unable to conclude.

I've noticed something similar with normal 1080p content on my BV11.

With an AppleTV 4 set to 1080p @50hz the bv11 handles motion and overall image quality beautifully - almost as smooth as a connected bluray player.

However I recently configured a micro pc with a decent video card as a Home Theatre PC, and struggled for some time to get close to the same image and motion quality despite identical Picture settings and a HDMI connection.

Switching the pc's video card to output at RGB (Full) and 24hz rather than 50/60hz immediately resolved both image / colour quality and most importantly resulted in pc based file video motion as smooth as I'm used to from the appletv or bluray.

I'll give it a go if I can work it out lol

I never know what all the Hertz actually means

And I still don't get it with the bits and hertz of ripped files as wel even though many have tried to explain it
